Teaching Games For Understanding Model is the topic that I researched. This teaching model was created by Rod Thorpe and David Bunker from Loughborough University. The abbreviation for Teaching Games For Understanding Model is TGFU. This model was made for students to help educate them about the games they play in Physical Education. This learning model does not reflect on the performance from the student. It focuses on teaching student’s skills and key concepts in the classroom. There are six stages in TGFU that specifically target an important skill or concept that the student needs. The following six stages are Game Form, Game Appreciation, Tactical Awareness, Decision Making, Skill Execution, and Performance. All of these stages combine to make one goal of educating students with the skills and concepts they need in Physical Education, sports, and life.
The first stage of TGFU is Game Form. This first stage is all about introducing the game to the students. Physical Education teachers should be showing the students the main concept of the game, and how it is played through example. They begin to focus on important aspects of how the game is played. Once the teacher finishes explaining the game, they introduce the changing of game form which is chunking out each important stages of the game by focusing on each specific part. This process is so that the students can gain experience in each role of the game.
Game Appreciation is the second stage of TGFU. This stage is important because the teacher begins to teach students the rules of the game. Teaching students the rules of a game before having them participate will help their performance, and improve game play. If a student is unable to learn the rules, then it would be ha...

The first part of the series of articles The Physical Education Hall of Shame lists childhood games which are considered inappropriate for physical education classes. The author argues that some games are potentially unsafe, have minimal participation time factors, they are potential to embarrass the student in front of their classmates, and focus on eliminating students from participation. One of the harmful games is Dodgeball. Even though the game involves teamwork, strategy, and motor skills, the game might be dangerous, and also includes the highly skilled students. Another game mentioned by Williams is Duck, Duck, Goose. It is a game of a minimal participation, where generally five students
To satisfy the competitive urge of their students, physical educators held “Play Days” and “Sport Days” for their female students. In a play day, teams from institutions did not play each other, but were comb...
To be a successful teacher not only in physical education but in all classroom settings you must be able to fully stimulate your students to think critically about the problem at hand. In sports thinking critically and making split second decisions can be the difference between winning and losing; through repetition students will be able to better identify which situations call for which moves. This ability to identify one's current situation in a given activity and react appropriately is referred to as tactical awareness; this is the basis for the tactical games model. Through implementing the tactical games model in your classroom your students will better understand not only the games being played but the tactics that are universal to all sports.
Mead when individuals(kids) engage in games they start to see the roles of themselves and roles of others,
The tactical game model uses student’s curiosity in a game structure to promote skill development and tactical knowledge needed for knowledgeable game application, when planning a tactical game model, the teacher plans a structure of learning task that have a game like assembly to develop students skills and tactics, leading the up to a modified or full version of the game. These game like assignments and modified games are called game forms. This model stresses the development of tactical awareness that facilitates skill application in smaller forms of games, so that students can apply what they have learned in the full version of a game when the time comes. The types of games that children play change dramatically compared to early childhood. In addition to the activities that they already play, they start to strive for a challenge. Middle childhood is the time when children acquire skills such as reading and arithmetic. During this time children start to play games that are complicated and rule oriented. Because of these changes, children begin to play games based on strategy such as playing cards and other games that test their mind. They play games such as Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh. These card games require children to count, remember, and plan strategies. By playing these games, children begin to plan consciously, coordinate actions, evaluate their progress, and modify their plans and strategies based on reflection and evaluation.
was the key to success. “Practice well, and the games will take care of themselves”.
Everything that I have learned from this course I plan to put towards my coaching career. Volleyball is not as easy of a sport ass most people believe it to be. It requires coordination, speed, accuracy, learning, strength, and other abilities along with the knowledge of the game and rules. Each person has a variety of motor abilities or an ability that is specifically related to the performance of a motor skill. With each motor skill a specific motor ability is required to successfully perform it. If two of my athletes have the same about of practice, level of instruction and motivation to do the skill then motor abilities will influence the level of performance success each person can achieve. Each person learns differently, some are visual, physical or mental for myself personally I am mainly a visual learner. Learning is defined as a change in the capability to perform a skill that must be inferred from a relatively permanent improvement in performance as a result of practice or experience. If I want to be successful as a coach I have to learn how to teach every type of athlete or learner. Some players may need to see me act out a motion or play, others need it written down, or need you to tell it to them while others need all of the above in order to understand and learn it completely. I believe this class can definitely help me to be a better coach because I can fully understand what the players are experiencing, and
...the motivation and attentiveness of the students and specifically, games can become a facilitator for self-directed study and research; when students enjoy a specific area in a game, they become more inclined to search it online, read a book about it, or watch a documentary on it (Rapini, Sarina 2012).
The use of computer based games as learning tools in the classroom has steadily increased over the past several years and is a trend that David Martz, sales VP of education software company Muzzy Lane, believes will continue in the future. Among the games developed by Muzzy Lane is Making History, in which the player leads a European nation in the years preceding World War II (Electronic Education Report 2). Playing a game such as this one allows the learner to immerse himself or herself in the period they are learning about rather than...
If students were filling out a worksheet, they would know they were completing a vocabulary activity, but with this game it was a fun activity that was interactive. It also impacted their learning because it got them ready for the rest of the Language Arts block. Normally during Language Arts, students need reminders to keep their heads up or students are complaining of stomach aches, but on this day students were ready to learn. Language Arts comes after the students have been at specials, lunch, and recess, so it is not always the easiest to get them into the learning mode. Having a game at the beginning got students ready to learn for the rest of the
The main goals behind Sport Education are to help students become knowledgeable about different sports and activities to the point where they can participate in these outside of the classroom to stay active. Also it teaches execution and strategies and encourages competitiveness. It is important for kids to be competitive because they will have to be in life and it will teach the importance of winning and losing the right way. “Sports offer kids a great chance to work cooperatively toward a common goal. And working coope...
“You’re going to pass the test, and if you don’t, no games until you pass the test next year.” My heart immediately dropped like a brick and my mind started to race. Games were my source of entertainment, and being cut off from them was like being exiled from society. The minute we got home, I raced to my room and started to make flashcards to study theory. For days, I studied non-stop, only stopping when necessary. Finally, the last group lesson arrived. Instead of finishing the usual one or two practice tests, I managed to finish five and I aced all of them.
‘Beyond 2012 – outstanding physical education for all’ makes recommendations for schools and the Department for Education to secure the quality of PE in schools and draws out improvements made to PE and sport over the last four years. The Department of Education are looking on making improvements which have generated from the London Games in 2012. They are hoping to make a new strategy for PESS to help pupils become more engaged in sporting activities in their school curriculum. The Government are advising class teachers to raise their expectations by setting more challenging and competitive PE lessons, so pupils increase their performance to a higher level. Also, to engage them in regular and high intensity activities for the full period they have been given in their timetable. As previous studies have shown, when schools were visited, teachers set activities that were too easy for children which led to boredom and lack of motivation and had no planned extra curriculum activities for the pupils. However, schools with the best PE provision had excellent PE lessons with extra curriculum hours set up for them. In 2014, there was a funding of £360,000 to train primary teachers to specialise in PE. This was to ensure children developed ‘a sporting habit for life’. Children's minister Edward Timpson said: "We have announced extra funding to create a second intake of specialist primary PE
