Participative leadership As we may all know by now leadership style plays a key role in the productivity and overall effectiveness of an organization. There are several different types of leadership styles and often times some leader’s poses more than just one style of leadership. Although there isn’t a leadership style known to be better than the other it is important for you to determine what style of leader you are in order to use you qualities to the best of your abilities and succeeded as a leader. After researching several types of leadership styles and completing different self-assessments I came to the conclusion that the leadership style that best fits me is participative leadership.

Participative leaders take into account constructive criticism, the ideas of others and are trustworthy. The traits of a participative leader help me establish a rapport with people that I will work with professionally. I would say that I am both relationship-oriented and task oriented. I think that it is important to develop a working relationship with the people you work with and the people you work for. By establishing a relationship, I will be able to empower people to be constructive members of society by finding their own niche. I am able to complete the task at hand--which would be to rehabilitate young offenders by fostering relationships with community leaders and organizations that have similar ideals as well. As a probation officer, I will work with others that come in contact with the young adults I work with. I will take into account their experiences with the young adults to work to find a way to better their situations and lead them towards better life choices. So what does this definition mean to me? First, it means that leaders who embrace a participative leadership style, values and involves their entire team. Second, it means leaders work closely with their team members, focusing on building relationships and rapport. What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
Participative leaders or better known as democratic leaders include team members and others, but making the final decision is up to the participative leader. Participative leaders build confidence and knowledge within team members because their inputs matter within decision making. It helps team members think their opinions help with decisions. If there is change that needs to be implemented a participative leader helps team members understand the change in positive way. I would definitely consider myself a participative leader because I love gathering as many opinions from people just in case I don’t see the situation from another point. It helps me put everything in a good perspective.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
I agree that both of these aspects are very important to being a successful leader, but I often find it difficult to have the right balance of both. I believe that I am more task-oriented than I am relationship-oriented. I like to achieve the best results possible and I like to set high standards for those that I am working with. When someone that I am working with is clearly upset or bothered, I will step in and try to resolve the issue. I do this so that we
