An overemphasized strength I am modulating is communication. I have always considered communication the most important element to successful leadership. I am strengthening my leadership skills (attending graduate school) and in my career I identified the need to modulate my ability to effectively communicate. I addressed several strategies to reach a new level of effective communication. The first step I used was self-discovery which includes identifying abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Everyone brings a different combination of strengths and weaknesses to any group, but it is important to remember that strengths can become weaknesses if overemphasized, and some weaknesses can be considered strengths by others. I consider myself a collaborative leader and work effectively in a team, but I have a mobile leadership position. I read various emails addressing remote workplace communication and I solicited feedback from my team. I reviewed all the information I learned and started to implement them all into practice. I immediately set expectations on how I planned to communicate. I established the best method of communication for serious material and it is only during our Friday conference call or private one-on-one conversations. I decreased my number of “unless” emails because my team stated forwarded emails are ineffective. Emails now address the receiver’s level of understanding, my purpose for the communication, and respect. Effective communication is vital to the success of my distributed team. In the past, communications primarily consisted of phone calls or typed messages put onto a bulletin board. Meetings were held in conference rooms with information and ideas being exchanged by conversation and on whiteboards or flip charts on easels (Burg, 2013). Phone calls were generally a one-to-one way to exchange ideas and information with some organizations using conference calls, where multiple people could talk and listen during one call. These ideas and communications were then spread throughout the organization by memos and word of mouth. In some cases, members of an organization never received the intended messages. When using these methods of communication, information was spread at a slower and sporadic pace in an organization.

The methods of communicating for a virtual team consist of different tools than used by a traditional team because “…awareness of others’ activities is more difficult and requires some degree of technological intervention” (Fussell et.al., 1998, p. 276). A virtual team needs to use alternative tools because it has members working from different geographical areas and possibly at different times. A traditional team meets face to face, whereas a virtual team needs the use of technology to operate and interact efficiently. Teleconferencing, video conferencing, faxing, e-mail, and instant messaging are some of the tools available to a virtual team.
I think this is an issue because although I do enjoy motivating others, I need to ensure that I am providing positive feedback, not to forget the negative because as humans there are always certain aspects that we can improve on. I want to ensure that others do not feel criticized or afraid to provide me with constructive criticism on my work ethic and my leadership style itself. Another one of my weaknesses I would say is that I have a tendency to express my views very strongly sometimes coming off as arrogant when I am in a group or leading a project, I want to manage this weakness by ensuring that when I am in a group I immediately ask my other peers for feedback on the statement I just provided because this will allow me to know what their thoughts are and how they view my perspectives. Another one of my weaknesses is I have a hard time accepting change. For example, I need to learn how to cope with change and realize that not everything I engage in or work on will always go my way because others will have different perspectives and they will not necessarily agree with my ideas all the time.
