Chapter 12.3 discusses approaches to leadership. The leadership theory of Leader-Member Exchange suggests that “leaders adopt different behaviors with individual subordinates and that the particular behavior pattern of the leader develops over time and depends, to a large extent, on the quality of the leader-subordinate relationship” (Landy & Conte, 2013, p. 494). In essence, this leadership theory references how close the leader is with the staff member. Is there a feeling of trust? Is the staff member one that holds expertise in their role that the leader can rely on? Building a relationship with a staff member doesn’t happen instantly. First when a leader focuses on the strengths of the employees the odds of the employee being engaged will increase dramatically. This compares to chapter one of our text book in that it says an effective leader is one who helps group members attain productivity. The second key is that the most effective leaders surround themselves with the right people and maximize their team. The book suggest when leaders try to be good at everything they will not be great at anything. Although it is often preached to be well-rounded this results in mediocrity. So instead trying to be good at everything, find and know your strengths and hone those skills to be a more effective leader. The authors say there are four domains of leadership with thirty-four themes that break-down under the domains and these explain the actual strengths of the leader. Full range leadership is said to be a combination of transactional, laissez-faire and transformational leadership styles. Mrs. Smith, based on the Service Learning Case study portrayed a variety of skills and traits which includes informative, knowledge -ability, Confident, approachable, reassuring, engaging, and articulate thus making her an exceptional leader. She also exhibits elements of authentic, servant and charismatic leadership styles.
The idea of what makes an individual a good leader; a manager or a worker is generally based on what are his/her perceived strengths. In Clifton and Nelson (2010) book “Soar With Your Strengths”, the reader is encouraged to focus on their strengths rather than their weakness to excel in school, in business, or in the workplace (p.19). In an organizational leadership role, management must understand the strengths and weakness of their subordinates. Successful organizations identify and improve upon their strengths. Simultaneously, effective leadership also acknowledges the existence of weakness while effectively isolating it. More often than not, unsuccessful organizations fail to achieve success because they focus on their faults rather than their strong suits.
Compare and contrast three leadership theories from chapter 1 (READ TEXT CAREFULLY). Which of the three would you choose to follow and why? I compared and contrasted Trait, Behavioral, and Situational Theories. Based on Trait Theories, a leader counts on having naturally given skills and charisma to lead. In contrary, Behavioral Leadership acquires its leadership skills through proper training. In the other hand, Situational Leadership focuses on “understanding of the situation and an appropriate response” (as cited in McCleskey, 2014, p. 118). The similarity in these three theories is that Trait, Behavioral, and Situational Leaders motivate their followers to achieve shared goals. I would follow a Situational Leader
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human understanding. It doesn’t seem like much, but for a majority of people it can be almost impossible. These qualities alone listed above are some of many important qualities that will allow a leader to inspire and guide a group of people towards goals successfully.
What is a leader? In times of crisis the ultimate survival of a group depends on the leader, or person who steps forward to take control, direct others, and maintain order. Although in today's society people are judged based on their appearance, yet looks have no influence on whether or not a person is capable of being a successful leader. Instead, good leadership is based on the individual skills and traits that the person possesses. The characters Ralph, Jack, Simon, and Piggy in William Golding's Lord of the Flies are perfect examples of people who may not be the best looking physically, but who despite this have the superior qualities to be an excellent leader.
Management and leadership skills in nursing and other healthcare professions are becoming a more and more widely spoken of subject, as they are essential skills for everyday practice in delivering care (Gopee and Galloway, 2009). Effective management requires the nurse to be able to draw on evidence based knowledge and experience to develop the ability to manage competently during practice. Skills without knowledge, appropriate attitude and understanding will not equate to competency (Watson, 2002).
The purpose of writhing this essay is to describe how to be an effective leader and how to lead a group to become a team. There are four principles of effective leadership will be described in the essay. The first principle is, to be an effective leader is a leader must have an extrovert personality. Second principle is, to be an effective leader is a leader must be able to delegate authority. Third principle is, to be an effective leader is the leader must able to maximize the potential ability of the followers. The last principle is, to be an effective leader is the leader must be able to make decision and take responsibility for the consequences. The different critical incidents also will be write in the essay to explain each of the principles and include theories such as Tuckman model, situational theory, behavioural theory and transformational leadership. In the end of this essay, a summary will be provided based on what I had learn throughout the semester in my PLG and LLG. Apart from that, the recommendations on how can we relates the principles into real life practice will be included.
Our leadership in this world has changed and affected us greatly. Leadership is being about to lead an organization with many people and to have control in the right way. “ The Leader of the Future” a book by Peter F. Drucker gives us information on why and how it is to be such a great leader. We need better leaders and we need them to guide us and help us along the way. Without leadership, our world would be in such danger and we America would be going through a lot.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.

As a child I never understood anything that my mother did or said but now that I am an adult I realize that my mother had a valid reason for everything she did.
