For the first time in its history, the United States did not welcome immigrants with open arms. As a result, the United States began to exert federal control over immigrants, which would change the ways Americans viewed and thought about race, immigration, and the nations’ identity as a whole.
Most American citizens, if asked, would say that sex trafficking is an issue that happens on foreign land, not here in America. Many American’s believe that slavery was abolished years ago, but modern day slavery is happening in this country and internationally every day right under our noses. The startling fact, is that sex trafficking happens within our borders, and in our very own towns at a much higher rate than anyone would imagine. Sex trafficking occurs when people, usually women and children, are coerced into the sex trade against their will (TVPA, 2013). Many traffickers target weak, vulnerable people who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and have a history of abuse; however anyone can potentially be trafficked (The Polaris Project, 2014). Many traffickers lure their prey in with false promises of love, money, or security, and then the victims are instead faced with lies, debt bondage, violence, physical and mental manipulation, and abuse (The Polaris Project, 2014). In today’s world many of our social issues, such as human trafficking, are made worse by the general lack of education, resources, and information available to the public and to victims. I propose a policy that will help 180 Turning Lives Around provide comprehensive and much needed services to victims of sex trafficking, as well as educate the community and law enforcement officials in order to help end modern day slavery in America.
Be honest as possible. If the employee is on the verge of being fired, let them know. This might wake them up to the reality of their actions. A group home is a place that children are sent to, once in foster care. All of the effort I had put into the past three months at work are now diminished by my one ignorant action of not calling and lying when I arrived. As a union steward, I have often sat with employees and have acted as mediator between the employee and the manager. I have carefully redirected emotional employees and have had to ask the employee to take a ten minute breather. I sat in one meeting where the manager became heated and started throwing insults at me as a person. I remained calm and reminded her (and the employee) that we were not there to engage in personal attacks, that the goal of the meeting was to create a more productive work environment for the employee and to ensure that the employee could meet the work expectations of the job. I also reminded all at the table that we were all professionals, doing our job and it was not a personal assault nor should it be, for anyone.

Make opportunities available for people to express their opinion about workplace policies and procedures. Recognize the impact of changes in such areas as work hours, pay, benefits, assignment of overtime hours, comp pay, dress codes, office location, job requirements, and working conditions. These factors are closest to the mind, heart and physical presence of each individual. Changes to these can cause serious negative responses. Provide timely, proactive responses to questions and concerns.
There are benefits and challenges for an open enrollment school. Two benefits that come to mind is an open door policy where all is welcome.
