Reflection On Workplace Ethics

When I think of ethics, I think of the angel on my left shoulder telling me to do the “right” thing, and the devil on my right, tempting me to join the dark side. This scenario deals with what is “right” or what is “wrong” and where my morals will lie in the end. But who is to say what is right and wrong? Ethics is such a trivial word because every person, company, and culture has a different idea of what is considered ethical or what is considered unethical. Throughout this paper, I will address my personal view on ethics, and how I believe it effects the workplace and today’s society. In this situation, it is important to have set ethical standards that everyone abides by, that way everyone and every organization is on the same page. For instance, I worked at a restaurant, The Farmhouse, in high school where I opened and closed the store. This put me in charge of all the money the restaurant made that night while also having access to our restaurant’s safe. They only entrusted this privilege with a few people in order to prevent theft. Although I never stole from the restaurant’s safe, there had been problems in the past with workers leaking the safe’s combination and money being stolen. After this occurrence, the owners held a mandatory meeting where they re-informed every staff member of the restaurants ethical policies. Without standard ethical policies, the theft could have continued and hurt the business even more. If our owners couldn’t trust us to be ethical, they would either need to do everything themselves, or watch over us like hawks. When I was given this new duty, I felt obligated to follow the ethical policies and was motivated to work harder because I knew that they had trust in me to get the job done properly and right.
