Online shopping, also known as web store, is defined as a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to directly purchase goods or services from a seller over the Internet using a web browser. It is not web storage, a built-up system in the Internet whereby one stores and shares data. Online shopping is similar to social shopping; a method of e-commerce where shoppers meet online to shop together. It is not similar to communal shopping; a method of shopping where the shopper enlists others to participate in purchase decision by giving reviews on a product to help customers decide. Online shopping has now become popular due to its convenience and its efficiency has improved its consumers’ lives, over time; consequently, it may replace the conventional shopping activity.
In a nutshell, online shopping consists of online customer, marketing administrator (manage products), payment processing system, warehouse clerk (fulfill order), and warehouse manager (manage inventory). Web storesprovide service such asmember accounts, checkout &payment, customer-friendly shopping (product ratings and reviews), and shopping security. There are also exclusive features including product features, ratings and reviews which are helpful to assure consumers of the quality of products and persuade them to purchase. Amazon, Ebay, and Alibaba are examples of the largest online retailing corporations, followed by another web stores like Wal-Mart, Best Purchase, IKEA, or small online stores in FaceBook, Instagram, Blogs, etc.

It was created after 1995 and it was only the Internet that made it possible for such an industry not only to be established but to become one of the most flourishing sectors in the business environment. What is interesting is that Amazon.com, together with eBay is the pioneer in the field. Both companies were launched in 1995 and are still extremely successful. The creation of e-mail in 1996 had a huge impact on the development of online retail by introducing a fast and easy way to communicate with customers. For this two-year period Internet usage doubled annually, thus, allowing for the expansion of the industry. Google is launched a year later, in 1998, only to become the most used search engine in the world and an essential partner for the online retailers by helping them tailor their websites to customer’s personal preferences and by advertising. After that, more and more people see the opportunity in the growing industry and enter it. By 2001 there are more than 513 million Internet users globally, which calls for action in terms of creating regulations and laws to protect the users and personal property. In 2003, Apple launches iTunes, and provides a platform for low-cost digital downloads. Another major change is the appearance of social media from 2004, which is one of the biggest influencer on the state of the industry. Technology plays a big part of the e-retailing industry. It has many positive qualities that impact the industry. Technology simplifies the purchasing process. Since the industry is web based, it helps eliminate the nuisance of not having products when wanted by having the capabilities of placing orders 24/7 at any computer with web access. Technology will also standardize the purchasing process thus reducing processing costs associated with traditional processing.
Based on these concerns, retailers in the international marketplace have their work cut out for them. But through proper education of consumers, and the ever-expanding growth of the infrastructure in many countries, the future seems to be leaning heavily towards using the Internet for many needs.
In 2012, Malaysia has 29.24 million of population, 65.8% among these people (approximately 19.24 million) are internet users (World Bank, 2012). In other words, Malaysia has about 17 million of people who shops online which is a very huge market. To adapt to this trend, Tesco Malaysia has started the Tesco Online Delivery Services that is convenient to consumers and it is the first hypermarket in Malaysia to provide an online delivery service. However, not all areas in Malaysia are able to enjoy this services, Tesco Malaysia only offers this service to some cities and towns within Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Bahru (Tesco Malaysia, 2012), (Refer to figure in appendices). For recommendation, they should provide online delivery services nationwide in order to reach to a broader audience and also people in urban, suburban or rural areas as well as in other states so that all consumers can enjoy the same convenience provided by Tesco Malaysia through online delivery service. With this implementation for the long run, Tesco will be able to satisfy and gain more customers because of their online delivering service.
Customers are quick to fall into the category of “belonging” found in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. They feel as if in order to belong or to feel loved and respected by others they must try to attain what everyone else has or wants. This is especially true during the holiday season when people feel that what they buy reflects how they feel about the people they buy presents for. If you feel that you must purchase a certain present that you know will be out of stock and hard to find, you are better off shopping online or by mail. Shopping online and by mail is becoming the new wave of shopping and it is a smart, convenient, and timesaving process.

US online retail sales rose an average of 11% in the first three months of 2009 (“US Online Sales Up,” 2009). The growth of online sales may be due to the growing number of consumers who shop online.
Over the last few years the rapid expansion of the internet has lead to many technological, business and social shift. Examples of such shifts are the increased demand for greater internet bandwidth, the movement from physical shops to online shops and the social acceptance and trust in using the internet for financial transactions. As the internet and E-Commerce become more integrated into our lives they continuingly drive changes in how we work and live as mentioned above. The future of E-Commerce promises to bring further changes in our lives as the internet continues to expand and it is these possible future shifts which I will discuss in further detail.
Online and in-store shopping differentiates in various ways. However, they both are convenient ways to shop. Recently, online shopping has been most convenient for me, but I enjoy both ways of shopping. I believe that shopping preferences change depending on a person’s situation. I noticed that many people are starting to prefer online shopping more than in-store shopping.
Online retail and shopping sales has been growing consistently every year, not just in the US but worldwide.
