Most of our issues revolve around the one-day class retreats. We have a good Kairos program as well as great gender-based sophomore overnight retreats. However, when it comes down to the shorter (freshmen, junior, and senior) retreats, it doesn’t have the momentum and lasting impression we believe a retreat should have. Each retreat runs from 9 am to 2 pm roughly. We start with a large group ice breaker, such as Murder or Bang, to energize the students, but it seems really overplayed and boring for them. Perhaps they’re not used to interacting with those outside their social groups, but it just doesn’t seem all that fun. We thought it was because it was early in the morning for them to play a game, but when we play more of these games
throughout the day, the reaction is the same. What are some icebreakers that work for you? Should we even implement icebreakers? We also split the class into smaller groups with upperclassmen leaders and begin the talks by teachers and students. Every retreat has a theme and the talks are structured by this theme. They’re usually 10 min. And, though the students listen, they’re not really into it, especially the freshmen class. They end up talking with their friends or looking at the time. Of course, the talks vary from person to person, but what makes a “good” talk? What would be meaningful enough yet not too serious for the students? After every talk, the groups talk about what they’ve learned and share their own stories, if they’re willing. However, there is only 15-20 min of these intimate talks and around 10 people in each group, so it feels rushed. There isn’t enough time for these groups to get to know each other or share their opinions, but how do we fit games, talks, and group discussions in only 8 hours? There are typically 3 talks, 3 games, and 3 group discussion times. We could try changing the schedule in some way, giving more time here, taking away some time there, but we’re unsure what structure that would look like and how effective that would be. When we tried to implement more games, the retreat came off as play-time and not a meaningful experience. When we tried to implement more talks, it seemed too serious. What are your thoughts?
One that is working with a group should know what area he or she should focus on and the purpose of the group. A group that gives support to adults who are perpetrators of domestic violence would be considered a psychoeducational group. A psychoeducational group creates the opportunity for group members to learn skills that can aid in their own personal growth (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2014). The goal of the psychoeducational group is to help the group members gain awareness of the issues that come along with domestic violence (Corey et al., 2014). Normally psychoeducational group sessions are about two hours long every week and may last for about four to fifteen weeks (Corey
I will be discussing about my reflection on the Six Week Group Content/Intervention Mid-term project and my internship. The assignment is on Psychoeducational and Counseling Groups for adolescents who are encountering dating violence from their partner. I will be discussing the paper and the critical knowledge that I obtained after completing the assignment.
The Effectiveness of Willy Russell's Presentation of the School Trip in Our Day Out 'Our day out' was written as a television play in 1977 but taken directly from Willy Russell's personal experience of teaching in a Liverpool comprehensive school in 1974. Not only does Willy Russell's experience stem from his time in teaching but also from being a pupil at two Liverpool comprehensive schools, leaving at 15 with no qualifications. This gives him a good understanding of situations described in the play from the point of view of both children and teachers. Liverpool at that time had a large working class population and a lot of poverty, with huge social problems.
Without a doubt the most meaningful activity I have ever been involved in is 4-H. I have been a member of the Cheerful Champs 4-H club for almost ten years. When you join a 4-H club the members and leaders become your friends and family. 4-H’s mission is to provide a positive environment for kids to grow and succeed through. With such an environment 4-H hopes to give kids confidence and empower them to do whatever they hope to achieve. Empowerment turns kids into leaders and teachers. After being in 4-H so long you learn how to lead and teach the younger members of the club and others in the community. Through 4-H I have gained a family and many qualities that I will cherish for life.
I have set up to have two separate meetings, one for teachers and one for students. I want to be able to open up my program to students of every age, gender and ethnicity. The more students I am able to educate that is one less student who can possibly suffer from back pain. I would conduct these weekly meetings in the sports medicine lab where I will have the team member of the club lead the activities. I will also ask speakers from different backgrounds with knowledge on back pain come visit. Because of the young population I want the weekly meetings to be informative but fun. That being said there would be different things throughout a whole year that I would want to address. These include, sports in relation to back pain, how to use correct posture in sports and at school, exercises and stretches to reduce back pain, and why use of good posture is important. The meetings will only be 30 minutes long and I will set up to have a school bus that could come pick up the students to take them home if needed. The meetings for teachers would be very similar in nature but would bring in professionals to help teachers come up with teaching plans that include stretching breaks and different activities that will allow students to move and understand material teacher is
I had the female student read a story to the class that talked about all the things that started with the letter L. She loves to be the teacher’s helper so giving her the chance to help teach her friends made her very excited. The rest of the class sat on the rug for circle time. The male student is very antsy and never stays seated. It was recommended that he start sitting in a chair instead of on the floor to help settle him down. In addition to giving him a chair, I planned on teaching the class the letter L song that had movements to teach it. The male student absolutely loved this! He was able to get out of his seat and move around the rug. Instead of being a behavioral challenge, he was participating with the class. From that day one I have tried to incorporate hands on learning and activities that get the class moving so that maybe the behaviors can be less of a
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
Instead of teaching us how to do projects and essays, how to use the quadratic formula, how to understand the concept of war, teach us instead the art of persuasion. Teach us the ways of entertaining an audience, the dilemmas that the world faces. Teach us that there are an enormous amount of issues in the world and they come with an abundant amount of solutions. To learn how to engage an audience is to learn how to teach one.
The group couldn't seem to find time for us to meet and plan our presentation, the first and only time all group members were present to work on the presentation was on the morning of the presentation. We worked on it and at the time I believed we had agreed on our final product, I personally felt all the slides needed at this point was editing and final touches to make it visually appealing for the audience. I went online to the google presentation we were using as a group to prepare our presentation and was surprised to see a different layout, additional slides, and contents which were different from what we as a group had worked on and approved as the final work we were going to present. I confronted the group members as to the changes on the slides and we had a conflict of what our
Here’s a look into an average high school classroom during first period. Kids are slowly shuffling in, reluctant to take their seats. Some grip their coffee cups, depending on those 2 cups of caffeine to get them through the day. Others have given up completely, with their head on the desk and a small puddle of drool forming on the desk. A majority of the kids will arrive just as the bell is rings, the ones who hit the snooze button too many times. While others who take their time in the morning, walk in just before the period ends. Why is this classroom such a dull scene? I forgot to mention it’s 7:50 in the morning and it’s a classroom full of teenagers, who are the most exhausted generation of adolescents.
For example, if a sample paper was given, it would show us what to expect and how it should look like. Another solution to this would be a required date to turn in a rough draft for the TA’s to look at to see if we are on the right track. I know the TA’s are busy with their own day to day activities, but turning in and getting a rough draft checked would make sure we are going towards the right direction and writing our papers the correct way. Like I said before, to fix the group issues, I think a different group per paper would be nice to mix up the ideas and require us to communicate with new people. As far as the number of assignments go, more grades would keep us more engaged in the class. Say if we had one quiz per week, it would force us to research a little more and dig a little deeper when researching these organizations, which would help us grasp more information when writing the proposals in my opinion. It would also make us have more grades in the gradebook which could help balance out the proposals if we did not do as good as we would of liked on them.
Imagine sitting in a class, completely bored out of your mind. This is not difficult considering everyone has taken a class like this somewhere along the road of their education. Not every class can be exciting and we should know that. Now imagine every class is of this level, with no “break”, or elective, classes incorporated into your day. Although this may not apply to all private schools, there are many that focus on specific topics. So even though the...
Lesson study refers to a Japanese program of developing teachers’ profession during their teaching experience. It is a translation from Japanese word Jugyokenkyo which literally means study or research (Fernandez & Yshida, 2012). Fernandez and Yushida (2012) define it as “lessons that are object of ones’ study”. It means that through lesson study, the teachers explore their teaching-based research goals through the several steps which they have defined them earlier. These steps include: collaborative planning, observation, discussion, revising, re-teaching, and sharing reflection. Also, Dudley (2014) defines lesson study as a procedure in which teams of teachers do planning, teaching, observing, and analyzing learning and teaching collaboratively.
The students who disapprove of morning assembly argue that assemblies can be time-consuming and tedious and that the weather conditions outside can distract them from paying attention to the announcements. When the weather is hot outside, students claim that it is difficult to concentrate on the announcements. On some occasions the assembly lasts more than the ten minutes it is allotted and it can make students late for class. “Morning assembly is painfully long and boring and is an unnecessary tradition that I think should not be continued,” truthfully states Taylor Giorlando-Wall, a current junior at Jesuit High School. Many students believe t...
In the process of completing this coursework, I have realised that every teacher should be all-rounded and equipped with adequate skills of educating others as well as self-learning. As a future educator, we need make sure that our knowledge is always up-to-date and applicable in the process of teaching and learning from time to time. With these skills, we will be able to improvise and improve the lesson and therefore boost the competency of pupils in the process of learning. In the process of planning a lesson, I have changed my perception on lesson planning from the student’s desk to the teacher’s desk. I have taken the responsibility as a teacher to plan a whole 60-minutes lesson with my group members. This coursework has given me an opportunity
