The English language has been around for a long time, it first originated from what we call Old English, the original name of Old English is Anglo-Saxon. The language Anglo-Saxon was spoken along the coast of Frisia. The old country Frisia went from the south coast of Denmark down to the north coast of The Netherlands. Around the fifth century the Anglo-Saxons traveled to Britain and dominated the country. Later Old English was divided into four dialects and around the ninth century, one of the four dialects, the saxon dialect, became the official written variety. Before the Anglo-Saxons had traveled to Britain, Old Norse was the dominant language in Britain. ‘’Foxas habbað holu and heofonan fuglas nest’’ Is a sentence written in Old English. …show more content…

Because of English we have come closer to countries on the other side of the world. English will continue to have a big role in todays society because it is a lingua franca. In smaller languages like Norwegian, Swedish and Danish the language is constantly changing, they take in slang words and English words that they just put a Norwegian, Swedish or Danish twist. Some languages are almost completely gone because of English. Most of these languages are only spoken and not written and are therefor more vulnerable to being lost. Other languages take in English and use both languages an example is Spanglish where both English and Spanish is used. Some examples of how that is used is: Aplicación” in place of "solicitud (application), Remover" in place of "quitar" (to remove). Another one is Hinglish which is a mix between English and Hindu. It is the same as in Spanglish where they take a word from Hindu and mix it with English. Many countries around the world have English as there second language, in Norway we have EFL (English as a forging language), because we learn it in school.
The future of English is unknown, but we can indicate that English will remain a lingua franca for a long time. Why that is, is because it is to hard to suddenly change a world language. If it so happens, what language will be the next ruler of the world? In my opinion It is Spanish, not only because it is spoken in many countries around the world,
Nothing ever stays the same for very long. As time passes, people, places, and ideas develop and change in a variety of ways. The english language is spoken and written so differently today that you probably could not speak understand its earliest incarnation. English has evolved and continues to evolved due to a multitude of reasons. The english language has changed and developed over time due to the way the lanuguage is used, the way the language is spread, and the development and advancement of new technology.
The most widespread language in the world is English. It is spoken and written more than any other language. English is a West Germanic language that was first developed in early England, in the 5th century A.D. when Germanic Anglo-Saxon tribes invaded the island. The vocabulary has been significantly influenced by other Germanic languages in the early medieval period, particularly French. In 1066, William the Conqueror of Normandy, invaded and took over the island of England and the Germanic language turned to French.
“Old English began with the Angles, Saxons, and the Jutes tribes. Around 450 CE, they began to invade the island known as Britannia.” (Dawe and Malott 374). The Angles, Saxons, and Jute all knew a few words from a language called Low-Germanic and later, once the tribes combined their languages and learned new words, changed their language to Anglo-Saxon or Old English. After this language was created, literature and poems expanded across the Old English period.
English is derived from England, one would think. But in fact the language name is found long before the country name. The latter first appears as Englaland around the year 1000, and means "the land of the Engle," that is, the Angles. The Angles,Saxons, and Jutes were the three Germanic tribes who emigrated from what is now Denmark and northern Germany and settled inEngland beginning about the fourth century A.D. Early on, the Angles enjoyed a rise to power that must have made them seem moreimportant than the other two tribes, for all three tribes are indiscriminately referred to in early documents as Angles. The speech of thethree tribes was conflated in the same way: they all spoke what would have been called *Anglisc, or
Actually, the majority of people in the world “speak 1.69 languages- not high enough to conclude that the average person is bilingual” (source C). Having the ability to communicate in one language can help others communicate in everyday life from walking through town and shopping to making deals in business. Having a society that is monolingual can improve economies and relations throughout the world. Also, there was a survey in 2007 to determine the number of 5 year olds and older who spoke a language other than English at home. Out of the 280,950,438 people, 225,505,953 of them spoke only English at home (source E). This means that again 20% of people spoke a language other than English at home. English is a popular language, not just in English speaking countries, but also in countries that it is not the primary language. As the world changes, English becomes more and more of a necessity for society to communicate. As time progresses, English may be the only language needed to communicate more for people around the world. Through the globalization of the English language, its effects would greatly improve society by shortening time lost in language barriers and improve understandings of
Baugh, A.C., & Cable, T. (2001). A history of the English language (5th ed.). Abingdon, UK: Routledge.
The spread of English where it used as a foreign and/or a second language may be compromised if it is replaced by another language such as Chinese or Spanish. For example, if China continues to gradually dominate the world economically, politically and technologically, its language could replace English as the major foreign language taught and learnt in various countries’ education systems because they b...
After selecting the English language to be standard, codification -Early Modern English (1500-1800)is the second step in standardization of language, it deal with grammar and vocabulary, grammatical rules and lexicon in grammar and dictionaries. That often happen when the language written for the first time, or when it developing as standard, or after a time of great and huge changing as after the demise of colonialism , which made language planning necessary .Wikipedia
The beginnings of English can be found in the occupation of England from the 5th century by north and west German ethnic groups who brought their 'indigenous dialects' (Seargeant, P. 2012, p. 1). The Oxford English Dictionary defines English as 'Of or related to the West Germanic language spoken in England and used in many varieties throughout the world' (Seargeant, P. 2012, p. 7). Invasion in the 9th century by Scandinavians, who settled in the north of England and the establishment of Danelaw in 886 AD defining the area governed by the Danes in the north and east, had a marked effect on the language spoken there (Beal, J. 2012, p. 59). These periods are known as Early and Later Old English (Beal, J. 2012, p. 50).
Old English (450-1100 AD), which is also referred to as Anglo-Saxon, is thought historically to be the earliest form of the English language. Originating with the arrival of three West Germanic tribes, who encroached
It has led to the development of new dialects and modification of existing ones. The British Empire has been able to spread the language across the globe and to date it is the most widespread language and most used in foreign transactions. Currently, the population of non- native English speakers is higher than native English speakers. This is a clear indication that English has become an international language.
The English language arose from the early Anglo Saxon inhabitants in ancient England and spread to Scotland and other European countries via the British Empire and later to the United States through colonial political and economical influences. It later dispersed to other parts of the world through these same influences to become one of the leading languages of the world. It has over the years developed by adopting different dialects to create a language, which is the standard lingual Franca in many countries. The rapid growth of the English language and its adoption by different cultures across the globe is sufficient ground to make it the global language.
Even though there are advantages as well as disadvantages, the need for international language for communication, politics, economics and security is necessary and English is the best “language candidate” for that function. English is a language spread all over the world and it is used by millions and millions of speakers. According to my opinion, people should use English as a tool to communicate with all cultures but every country must keep their culture and language is a great part of it. In conclusion, language defines identity of a country and everyone should keep their language and explore others.
The English language is divided into three main periods; Old English, Middle English and Modern English. Old English was spoken during 450-1100 AD when the Germanic tribes formed a language that was mixed with different dialects of the Germanic tribes. The word English is driven from the old English word “Englisc” which came from the word Angle. The Angles are named after their homeland; Engle. During this time, they are numerous additions to the language
For example, business activities always use English. Some multinational enterprises company require employee to have a high level English skill, so that they can communicate with the partner very easily. Good communication can obtain high benefit in business. Many people of multinational company use English as a world language. You will hear business people use English in many cities. They need to understand English and use English to express thoughts and ideas. Also, English is always used in education. When teacher use English to teach, student can learn a lot of words that can be use in different subject. If student do not learn English as well, they should spend much more time on their study, not only in the knowledge, but also in English. Nowadays, more and more people learn English and English become more important to Chinese. Not only must children learn English from kindergarten but also people who do not understand English cannot work at government (IBJ, 2014). Therefore, English is considered as global
