I personally believe that occupational stress is less challenging than family stress. Your occupation is something that you can somewhat control. In other words, it may be hard, but if you are stressed in the job you have you can always leave it. Also occupational stress can be handled very direct and professionally if it deals with other people. You cannot say the same for family stress. Many of us have very close ties to our families and this also includes a very strong emotional connect. Therefore, being stressed out by your family can be taken very personal. We invest a lot of emotions and care into dealing with our families and this makes it harder to deal with anything involving them.
Also occupational stress can be predicted to a certain
extent. When working you have an idea of how you would like your professional life to be. Also you learn everything that your job entails. This can give you the opportunity to prepare yourself for any obstacles that could potentially cause stress in your life. With family, it is not that simple. Anything could really happen. As previously stated you are dealing with other people at a very intimate level. Also you cannot necessarily plan for how they will affect the level of stress in your life. You cannot really predict what they do and how it affects you. In my opinion this is the biggest difference about the two types of stress. Therefore, in regard to managing these forms of stress family stress is harder to manage because it is more challenging than occupational stress. I beliefs are based off my experience as someone who works and the stress it causes me in comparison to the stress I feel from my family. I believe being a working college student away from home may play a role and my opinion.
Every job has different stress factors and levels. Debbie enlightened me that she has done this job for 36 years and it is very unstressful, she actually enjoys coming to work! The only thing that one may find stressful is working with a patient that doesn’t want to get better or seeing someone not progress.
Having a family is no easy task, especially when you are faced with many challenges that are unforeseen. Sometimes one imagines or hopes for an ideal family. The ideal family would consist of a spouse, one or two kids and live happily with little to no conflicts. The reality is that even if one tries to avoid conflict by all possible means, conflict is inevitable. Stressors and strengths within a family can be seen in almost every situation. Although stressors tend to be more noticeable than the strengths. Some of which will be discussed later on, although it will be mainly focused on the strength and stressors faced after a divorce for children. But if one focuses on the stressors more than the strengths, one will only see stressors rather than solutions.
Family is made up of both strengths and stresses. Families cannot have one of these factors without the other. Even the most dysfunctional families have some strengths that keep them united, while the most united families have some stress. Let’s take the Kardashian for example. When Kim Kardashian West was robbed of her jewelry worth nearly 9 million dollars, while that’s a big stress how her husband Kanye West reacted and walked off the stage in the middle of concert in Queen to check on her when he heard his wife has been robbed is a strength, it shows how they have a bond that could last.
Nurses need to be physically and mentally able to deliver their duties to ensure the safety and health of those they care for. Thus, occupational stress among nurses is significant.
The development of nursing theories has provided a perspective in which one can define the purpose of nursing, when nursing is required, and establish the parameters and goals of therapeutic nursing activities (Ahmed,2001). A nursing theory is defined "as concepts, definitions, relationships, and assumptions derived from nursing models or from other disciplines and project a purposive, systematic view of phenomena by designing specific inter-relationships among concepts for the purposes of describing, explaining and predicting the phenomena of nursing” (Boxer & Jones, 2010). In addition, nursing theories provide frameworks through which nurses can examine various situations. As nurses encounter new situations, these frameworks provide a structure for organization, analysis, decision making and communication (Ahmed, 2001). The following paper will discuss the middle range nursing theory of Family Stress and Adaptation by Geri LoBiondo-Wood, and how it relates to patient care and guides nursing practice.
Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing surroundings. It has physical and emotional effects on us and can make good or bad feelings. As a good influence, stress can help motivate us to do something, or help us through the day. As a bad influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression (overall, make you feel really crappy), which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomachs, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion (or demotion), or a new relationship, we experience stress as we change our lives to cater to this. In so adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hurt us depending on how we react to it.

The concept of stress is something every individual deals with throughout their lives. This stress that everyone deals with can come from a variety of different causes and reasons. Some jobs are just naturally stressful. Those jobs might have more responsibilities, rules, regulations and scrutiny that come with them. Police work is generally regarded as one of the most stressful jobs an individual can have. What makes police work that much more stressful than that of other jobs? Does the stress that police have on a daily basis affect that their families as well? There are a number of individuals who experience stress relating to their profession. Occupational stress is defined as “Job related stress, which often comes from occupational duties for which people perceive themselves as having a great deal of responsibility.” (Seaward, 2012) With different occupational comes many different forms of occupational stress. Personally, I though it would be interesting to research occupational stress in a customer focused environment.

The words “stress” is something all of us have experienced but it seems that there are many different definitions used by psychologist, medics, management consultants or others. Psychologists describe stress as “demands of life” which pointed out as “stressors” and stress is the cause of the worn out tissue of our body (Meenakshisundaram, 2012, p.101). Stress can be divided into four types which are eustress, acute stress, episodic acute stress and chronic stress (illustrated in Figure 1).
Overall, no matter what category we put stress in, it is always going to be a part of our lives. Either as a motivator or as problem that gets in the way. Cataclysmic events, personal stressors, background stressors, they are happening all around us and the only thing we can do is cope with it all. Once we know how stress affects us in our relationships and everyday lives the easier it is for us to cope with it all.
