Obesity. The word itself conjures up images of severely overweight men and women who are the same size as a small hippo. The people you see walking around town in sweatpants and t-shirts the size of Texas because nothing else will fit them. You think “How does someone even get that big?” The next week you find yourself at the doctor for a checkup, and discover that you have gained a few pounds yourself. You are now, officially classified by the World Health Organization (WHO), as severely obese (SOURCE http://apps.who.int/bmi/index.jsp?introPage=intro_3.html). As you leave the office you feel like a slow moving tank. You think to yourself, “I don’t look like a morbidly obese person, do I?” But, how you feel about your new diagnosis is the least …show more content…
Yet, this knowledge has not turned many to healthy eating habits, or lifestyle behavior changes. Think of the millions of websites, diet drugs, infomercials, and fad diets that are out there trying to persuade us to eat this or that, or whatever we like, and still be healthy. We all know, deep down, that these are not solutions, and that many are unhealthy and harmful to our bodies. Still we try many of them. All of us reluctant to change our eating, and exercising habits. Until finally the day comes when we are told we are facing a serious illness, which was most likely caused by a lack of nutrition and over eating. Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, stroke, and heart disease are just a few health problems that many Americans are suffering from as a result of being overweight. Conventional wisdom says that since a calorie is a calorie, regardless of its source, the best advice for weight control is simply to eat less and exercise more. Yet emerging research suggests that some foods and eating patterns may make it easier to keep calories in check, while others may make people more likely to overeat. (source …show more content…
Employment was more labor intensive, daily chores required more movement and energy. Transportation was limited to those with money, requiring many people to walk to and from each destination. Transportation also limited the food distribution throughout the nation, and even globally. Today, everything is available at a touch of a button, or a flick of a switch. Jobs are done via telecommuting, Most of our daily chores can be completed by machines; dishwashers, washing machines, automatic vacuums complete the job without any effort from people. More and more transportation options become available at a very inexpensive price. Everyone has a car, some families have two or even three automobiles. Moving sidewalks, escalators, elevators, buses, airplanes, all of these things getting us to our destination with little or no effort on our part. Currently every type of food is available on almost every corner. Some businesses even deliver food right to your home. Requiring no physical activity whatsoever from you to obtain sustenance. This rise in a sedentary life is the cause of many preventable deaths. Combine obesity together with a sedentary lifestyle and the risk for Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD) increases by more than 40 percent. (Source
Obesity is a serious problem that increases year after year and affects the lives of many Americans. It is a problem that needs to be eradicated, but who is responsible for this problem? Some argue that individuals are responsible for their own weight; that it is a private concern. Some others, on the other hand, argue that it is a public concern; therefore, the government should play a significant role to stop reduce obesity from the public domain. They also argue that advertisements for junk food are factors that increase obesity. As persuasive as the advertisements can be and even with the help of the government, it is our decision to not eat healthy and end up in a state of obesity.
According to the USDA, at the start of century 21st American people have increased their daily caloric intake by consuming five hundred calories more than in 1970. As cited by Whitney & Rolfes (2011), there are many recognized causes of obesity such as genetics, environment, culture, socioeconomic, and metabolism among others; but the cause most evident is that food intake is higher than the calories burned in physical activity. Excess of energy from food is stored in the body as fat causing an increase of weight. During the course of the last 40 years, obesity has grown enormously in the United States and the rates remain on the rise (pgs. 272-273).
I. Introduction: You’ve probably heard it a million times that obesity is an issue on the rise in America. Well, why if everyone knows that it is a problem is nothing being done to fix it? I’m here to propose a solution to this problem affecting over a third of the adult American Population.
Have you ever had those moments where you are feeling unmotivated or zero energy to workout? I will be the first to tell you I have had these moments. Being involved in the fitness world, I love every aspect of fitness. For the past 5 years, I was working out 5 days a week and had my ups and downs with results. I am guilty of it, I would pick up a workout magazine and try out this crazy workout and just destroy my body. Sure, I saw some results but I was becoming more and more tired throughout the day. On top of that, I was only getting 5 hours of sleep and not eating appropriately to refuel my body. I know stupid right? I am human and I am not perfect!
Today I will be outlining my plan to help education parents and children alike on the dangers of childhood obesity. With the proper education I feel we all can make better decisions in our children’s lives as well as our very own.
When promoting plus sizes and television shows, are self-esteem or heart disease also being promoted? People throughout the world struggle with being anorexic, bulimic, overweight, or obese. TLC’s now popular reality TV show, My 600 Pound Life, displays the daily struggles of morbidly obese people. While encouraging women to love their body is appealing, there are many dangers in the fondness of obesity. Glorifying obesity can lead to being morbidly unhealthy, as demonstrated by Dominique Lanoise, a woman who died from morbid obesity.
America is one of the most obese countries in the world, and the reasons are quite obvious. Take a look around. Fast food chains on every block, more and more technology to make our lives easier, and high amount of stress are just a few factors to weight gain in our country. There are many different views on obesity and how the people think it should be resolved, whether it's government making the change or the people taking care of themselves. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Are we doing enough to bring these statistics down? No. In the last 40 years, there has been a growth to more than 160,000 fast food restaurants in America (“Adolescent and School Health”). Restaurants (such as Wendy's, McDonald's etc.) serve more than 50 million people per day, generating about 65 million in sales annually. Only since obesity has become a national epidemic have fast food restaurants changed their ways. But we need to do more than just change the kind of oil the french fries are fried in. Better yet, why don't we remove, or intensely decrease the number of the unhealthy fast food chains, and spread more healthy fast food chains, such as Subway? Is it something government could take act in? Should the United States government take measures to fight the rise of obesity in the country, or are choices concerning diet and nutrition better left to the individuals, free of government interference?

The importance of your health affects you everyday, and it's something that can not be ignored. Fat, skinny, tall, or short, living a healthy life impacts a social life, emotional state, and mental thinking. Healthy eating starts with educating people on the life of unhealthy eating like obesity or diabetes that can consume your life in a flash. It's important that students, superintendent and principal get involved in trying to make school healthier. Superintendent and principals are seen as role models and should encourage the students to get educated. Studentś should be aware of their eating habits in schools, and in home life. The problem has to be addressed and find a way.
Losing weight is a significant aspect in your quest to become a better person. As you strive to become a better person, you begin to set smaller goals that you can achieve daily. You keep yourself motivated via reading articles, books, and watching videos on weight loss and self-improvement. The fact that you have begun to change your habits, the places you hang out maybe, means that you will have new friends who share the new values that you have begun to uphold. It also means that there is a high likelihood that you will lose some friends. This may feel bad. However, the truth is it is inevitable. Before you insist on keeping all your old friends, you need to ask yourself: are they negative?
Obesity is an issue that most people may be aware of, but I don't feel like many people actually know the ins and outs of it and how bad it really is. Although the speech that Jamie Oliver gave was about teaching children about food, I feel as if we need to teach adults about food just as much as children.
