Nutrition education is often promoted among adolescents to prevent diabetes, obesity and induce healthier behavior change. Nutrition intervention programs are frequently reinforced by health educators or teachers to address the importance of healthier dietary practices among teenagers. These interventions are often emphasized due to the nutritional vulnerability of this group. Indeed adolescents’ intense nutritional requirements for growth, along with their naivety in regard to mass media, or the food industry’s marketing strategies, may engender transience. Moreover, their high concerns with regard to body image oftentimes engender instability, and insecurity which may produce disordered eating among this group. Nutrition promotion and education are critical to produce a change. This handbook aims to guide adolescents to understand and respond to their daily dietary needs by applying healthy food choices.
Introduction
During the adolescence, the body requires a considerable amount of nutrients to develop and grow. An optimal diet is critical to achieve potential growth. Failure to consume adequate nutrients could delay maturation or slow body growth and development.
Besides, the consumption of healthy food at this stage of life will enhance a healthier dietary adulthood lifestyle through prevention of chronic diseases including diabetes, cardivascular disease, or cancer.

Nutrition is the process of consuming food and utilizing the nutrients from the food eaten (“Nutrition.”). It is very important to have enough nutrition for a growing teenager as it helps to develop and strengthen the bones along with growth and development (“Adolescent and School Health.”). Nutrition is very vital for the growing body as it helps prevent certain diseases and helps give the proper development and nourishment (HAGIKALFA). There are multiple nutrients that help maintain development and nutrition such as carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. If there was a lack of nutrition in a growing teenager, the teenager will not be able to have enough nutrition to grow and they will be more prone to sickness and diseases (“Hunger and Malnutrition.”). A malnourished teenager will may end up having muscle weakness, fatigue, dizziness, fragile bones, tooth decay, and much more (“Hunger and Malnutrition.”).
The term vegan, devised in 1944 via Donald Watson, is referred to as an individual that follows veganism, which is the exclusion of all animal products to be consumed, predominantly in their diet (Kahn, 2011). Veganism is primarily supported due to preventing animal cruelty, as well as its health benefits and environmental consequences (Craig, 2009). Adolescence is referred to as the transition from childhood to adulthood, due to biological changes that occur via the onset of puberty (Ellis, 2004). Essential nutrients that are vital to be consumed during adolescence are proteins, which are in the category of macronutrients as they are required in large amounts, as well as calcium and iron, which are categorised as micronutrients, thus being required in smaller amounts (Bialostosky, Wright, Kennedy-Stephenson, McDowell & Johnson, 2002). Protein, calcium and iron are claimed to be essential nutrients in an adolescent female following a vegan diet as they are at higher risk to be lacked via plant-based sources if the consumption of these nutrients are inadequate, which may implicate negative effects on the growth and development during the pubertal growth spurt (Craig, 2009; Ilich-Ernst et al., 1998). I think this project was a great opportunity for me to learn how to educate and guide patient’s in making better nutritional decisions with the help of my using MyFitness Pal. I think MyFitness Pal is an excellent resource for any patient that is interested in improving their nutrition. Nutrition is often neglected by patient 's, therefore, as dental professionals it is important to use the latest technology to attract our patient’s to become more interested in their nutrition. The positive impact of this project has encouraged me to recommend using MyFitness Pal to my patient 's as a hands on activity to help correlate nutrition and the patient’s overall health. This project also allowed me to become aware of the poor food choices I made, which will help to benefit my patient’s that have a similar diet.

Both of these options have qualities that make them appealing, so choosing might be difficult or even come to a middle ground. Childhood obesity is a health problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent in society’s youth. For a number of years, children across the nation have become accustomed to occasionally participating in physical activities and regularly snacking on sugary treats. In result of these tendencies, approximately one third of American children are currently overweight or obese (Goodwin). These grim statistics effectively represent all the lack of adult interference, in regards to health, has done to the youth of America. The habits of over consuming foods and under participating in physical activities are all too common in the children of today. Children cannot solve this issue alone, though. These young people need to essentially be given the opportunities to make positive health decisions and learn about good, nutritional values.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Eating habits are a prime indicator for identifying nutritional and health status. This studyexamines the University of Guam (UOG) undergraduate students eating habits. According to Kurubaran et.al, he describes college students as “…nutritionally vulnerable groups…[because of the] Rapid changes in [their] physical growth and psychosocial development…”(1). For freshman and sophomore college students, they will be categorized in this study as adolescents. Thomas et.al, from World Health Organization (WHO) explains that “Adolescents [aged 10-19] are usually open to new ideas; they show curiosity and interest…[therefore]…with increasing age, adolescents’ personal choices and preferences gain priority over [their] eating habits acquired in the family, and they have progressively more control over what they eat, when, and where” (“Nutrition”). This means that during our early childhood years, our parents and/or guardians would normally cook meals for us. Therefore, they were able to regulate and be held responsible for our eating behaviors. However, now that we are significantly older and attending the university, many college students for the first time is able to make his/her own dietary choices. This studyexplores and determines which variables: parental households, prevalence of fast foods, media, or their peers affect and influence the most with UOG students’ nutritional choice. At the same time assesses whether UOG undergraduate students are eating healthy or unhealthy food.
There are many health issues and concerns for teenagers. Many health issues are related to illegal substances but everyday food is just as big of a danger. Obesity is sweeping the nation and its due to all of the amount of junk food, fast food, and sweets that are promoted and sold every day. In the United States the number of teenagers that are obese is increasing rapidly. 18% of teen from ages 12 to 19 are obese. That is tripling teen obesity in 1980. 30% of kids from ages 6 to 19 years old are obese. These statistics show a huge problem and it is growing faster than ever.
