Have you ever wondered how nutrition and calories benefit the human body? Calories and nutrition are very important to the growing body of a teenager. During the Holocaust, many prisoners in concentration camps were not given the sufficient amount of food in order to have a proper diet and receive proper nutrition. Eliezer Wiesel was one of the many prisoners in the Holocaust. The deprivation of calories and nutrition had its effects on Elie. Nutrition is the process of consuming food and utilizing the nutrients from the food eaten (“Nutrition.”). It is very important to have enough nutrition for a growing teenager as it helps to develop and strengthen the bones along with growth and development (“Adolescent and School Health.”). Nutrition is very vital for the growing body as it helps prevent certain diseases and helps give the proper development and nourishment (HAGIKALFA). There are multiple nutrients that help maintain development and nutrition such as carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. If there was a lack of nutrition in a growing teenager, the teenager will not be able to have enough nutrition to grow and they will be more prone to sickness and diseases (“Hunger and Malnutrition.”). A malnourished teenager will may end up having muscle weakness, fatigue, dizziness, fragile bones, tooth decay, and much more (“Hunger and Malnutrition.”).
Calories are a measurement for energy and are often measured as the heat energy absorbed from the digestion of foods (“Calories.”). Calories seen in labels of food are not measured in heat energy, but as estimated comparison of energy density (Atkins). Food is essential to basic life. It provides people with the energy to think, speak, walk, talk, and breathe. In preparation for the Jews deportation from the ghettos of Transylvania, “the (Jewish) women were busy cooking eggs, roasting meat, and baking cakes”(Wiesel, 13). The Jewish families realized how crucial food was to their lives even before they were faced with the daily condition of famine and death in the concentration camps. The need for food was increased dramatically with the introduction of the famine-like conditions of the camps. Wiesel admitted that, although he was incredibly hungry, he had refused to eat the plate of thick soup they served to the prisoners on the first day of camp because of his nature of being a “spoiled child”. But his attitude changed rapidly as he began to realize that his life span was going to be cut short if he continued to refuse to eat the food they served him. “By the third day, I (Elie Wiesel) was eating any kind of soup hungrily” (Wiesel, 40). His desire to live superseded his social characteristic of being “pampered”. Remarque also uses his characters to show to how a balanced diet promotes a person’s good health. Paul Bäumer uses food to encourage Franz Kemmerich, his sick friend, “eat decently and you’ll soon be well again…Eating is the main thing” (Remarque, 30). Paul Bäumer feels that good food can heal all afflictions. The bread supply of the soldiers in All Quiet on the Western Front was severely threatened when the rats became more and more numerous.

It is estimated that about forty-three million children under the age of ten are obese and that was found in urban areas. One of the main reasons obesity develops is due to the fact that the child, adolescent or adult has an unhealthy diet. Good nutrition plays a huge part in everyone’s life; no matter if you’re a male or female good nutrition is always important. Keeping us healthy, nutrition reduces the risks of developing diseases such as chronic disease, stroke and also cancer. Good nutrition is also important because studies have shown that it is good for mental health including depression which is also linked to obesity. A proper diet consists of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, fiber foods and limiting fats or sugars. Eating fruits and vegetables is important when developing into an adolescent or an adult because vegetables are rich in vitamins A and C, also fibers and potassium which are excellent for the human body (Fuentes, Schellekens, Dinan, & Cryan, 2015, p. 52). The misconception that many parents have about nutritional and the many malnourished children in the world cause long-term nutritional problems. The results of these problems such as protein-calorie malnutrition, marasmus, kwashiorkor, and formula have cause children to grow into adulthood with disorders or worse they don’t even live to see adulthood. Some children don’t have any kind to thrive with thin frail bones; some children are forced to deal with swollen face, legs, arms and abdomens; and other children are more vulnerable to other diseases such as measles, diarrhea and influenza. Not only do children not grow, but they also have excessive weight gain during childhood.
