The period soon after the second year of life is a transition period from infancy to childhood. During this period, a child requires a variety of foods to provide adequate nutrients for growth and development. Periodic assessment of the growth of the child helps to rectify problems in time. Growth pattern, height and weight gain record and manifestations of growth and development have to be evaluated periodically.
Therefore, food is an important and central part of children's lives. Helping children acquire healthy eating habits during this period, is of utmost importance and needs to begin during the preschool years. Human beings require sufficient food for sustainability and functionality. The problem of malnutrition and its effects on brain development, physical and intellectual functioning has tremendous implications. As a result, many children end up experiencing stunted growth and development. The impact of chronic malnutrition (stunting) on child cognitive, physical and mental development being irreversible and a long effect on health and child mortality is well documented in the Lancet Series 2008. Children are the future of any society. For this reason, children should be a starting point in any society as they will contribute in shaping the future of the nation. It is the children whose individual growth, development and health that will avail an opportunity and contribute collectively their efforts to nation development. Many institutions and governmental organisations have often ignored the importance of child health and nutrition.
Therefore, this study will show the correlation between the dietary diversity of school meals and the nutrition status of preschool children aged 3 to 5 years in a public or private school in Lusaka district where they provide meals.
Dietary diversity is usually measured by summing the number of foods or food groups consumed over a reference period. The reference period usually ranges from one to three days, but seven days is also often used, and periods of up to 15 days have been reported (Drewnowski et al. 1997).
