According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. RDNs use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make unique, positive lifestyle changes. They work throughout the community in hospitals, schools, public health clinics, nursing homes, fitness centers, food management, food industry, universities, research and private practice (What is an RDN and DTR?). As a dietitian, I will conduct myself with honesty, integrity, and fairness. I will support and promote the highest standard of professional practice for the benefit of clients, the public, and the profession. I will treat …show more content…
Department of Health & Human Services defines nutritional assessment as: “measurement of indicators of dietary status & nutrition-related health status to identify the possible occurrence, nature, & extent of impaired nutritional status,” which can range from deficiency to toxicity” (Nnakwe, N. E., 2018). Tools to help assess will include anthropometric, biochemical test, clinical/physical observations, dietary intake data, and epidemiological information. I should be able to identify and label specific nutrition problems that can be independently resolved or improved through nutrition intervention. I will look at the etiology and the signs/symptoms are determined during the nutrition …show more content…
They recognize, support, and build on the strengths and resiliency of all people. Generalist social workers help people achieve their goals through the application of research supported interventions. Generalist social workers value the process whereby research, policy, ethics, and practice inform each other. The foundation of social work is built upon research and practice, focusing on social, political, and economic influences that produce human suffering and community disorganization. The goal is to understand how social problems present the individual level. I will need to investigate and critically think about all possibilities and resources for intervention when approaching a situation. I need to have general knowledge of four theoretical approaches to inform generalist practice, including the systems framework, the structural framework, the ecological framework, and the social learning framework. This will allow me to work towards the planned change
Social Work is the study of people and how they interact with the systems in their environment and other people. Social Workers use theories, sets of ideas or concepts, of human behavior and apply them within their professional social work ethics to the problems facing clients in order to help them gain balance in the systems in their lives. Theories help to organize knowledge enabling social workers to help make sense of problems. There are many different theories. They have been grouped into broad categories called theoretical lenses (Rogers, A. 2013).
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
The generalist model in the social work profession was drawn from a social system’s theory in the late 1960 's due to the complexities of problems and challenges faced by human beings. It was needed to assist social workers in assessing and interviewing clients. Rather than make the client fit the model, the generalist model seeks to find the approach that best fits the client, as well as emphasizing respect for client self-determination and the use of client strengths with empowerment as an expected client system outcome. A generalist practice model is used in all areas of social work field in ethical and effective helping based on the eco-systems perspective using problem-solving strategies and practice skills requiring a strengths perspective
Moreover, though the tool is more practical and frequently used dietary assessment for assessing individual diets in large cohorts (easy to administer...
These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined. Nutrition experts in the United States and Canada have a list of standards with four list values. These list values are called the Dietary Reference Intakes. The DRI committee sets these values for vitamins, minerals, calories, and nutrients.
The registered dietitian completes an assessment within 72 hours of admission and initiates appropriate intervention and goals based ion signs/symptoms of altered nutritional status to achieve desired outcomes. The RD interviews patients to obtain diet history, oral intake, food allergies, cultural/religious preference and other pertinent information needed.
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. Even so, its recommendations are considered almost “holy” by physicians, nutritionists, and dieters, but in reality, they are the root cause of the problem. A single visit to our local public school cafeteria and it will become clear that they do not have the best interests of the children at heart. What they are feeding our innocent children is preposterous. Doctors, the people we trust and expect to be “the experts”, do not know much about the subject of nutrition. A vast majority of medical schools in the U.S. require just 25-30 hours or less of nutrition training, and some do not require at all. So doctors must rely on the ...
Nutrition assessments include clinical and dietary assessment, anthropometrics, as well as biochemical, laboratory immunologic and functional indices of nutritional status (Gibney, 2005). In epidemiological studies, different dietary investigation tools were designed to assess the nutritional status in individuals and populations, nutrition monitoring and surveillance and diet-disease research (Friedenreich, et al., 1992, Taren, 2002).
I am inspired to explore the field of dietetics which is very broad and dietitians perform a variety of functions in their jobs. As a dietitian, I can work in a wide variety of positions such as a foodservice manager in commercial or institutional, a community nutritionist, such as the WIC and Headstart, a consultant to major food corporations such as Kelloggs and Kraft or go into sales. I am very interested in working in a position where I can help people develop habits to improve their health. I may eventually go on to graduate school to advance my knowledge of dietetics.
The mini nutritional assessment is a helpful screening tool to used to identify poor nutrition or at risk for malnutrition in older adults. It is essential to screen older adults for poor nourishment because they are at risk for developing chronic illnesses that can affect their quality of life. The assessment focuses on poor appetite, chewing problems, weight loss, mobility, neuropsychological problems, and body mass index. The patient who was interviewed is a 100 year-old female who is a long term resident at Valencia Gardens Health Center. It was a privileged to talked to the resident because she has had a full life of experiences that she is able to recall for example, the orange groves, in Riverside.
My drive for self-improvement on the soccer field led me to an interest in nutrition, but it is now my passion for empowering others through servant leadership that fuels my growth as a health educator. I have felt most rewarded when teaching prevention strategies and mentoring others in the community and with the employees I serve everyday. In my work, I’ve seen children in less fortunate situations desire to educate their family on nutritious food choices, to providing presentations for employees on smart choices while grocery shopping, these valuable experiences have given me the confidence to embark on new challenges as a future registered dietitian.
Pursuing a career in nutrition is not what I have always wanted to do, to be honest; until very recently I had not even realized how much this field of study intrigues me. Growing up with a Venezuelan and Arabic food culture, I was never taught to be mindful of nourishment. I always viewed the act of eating just as another regular task of my life, like breathing or studying. I used to classify food in two groups: the bad (made up of sugary and fatty produce) and the good. Likewise, I believed that the only way to achieve a healthy physique and a “fitness” lifestyle was to live by a very restrictive diet and perform hours running on a treadmill at the gym.
A scientists dietician has their job is usually working with people who have dietician needs, giving out information to people about nutrition and offering advice, Improving on treatments and educating patients or even other people, other community services and health care professionals. A dietician has a variety of settings/areas in many different hospitals or community groups, in those places they teach people about their diets as part of
families, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. Social workers are change agents and because of that, they aim to help people develop their skills and abilities to use resources provided to them to strengthen and improve their lives and communities to resolve problems. One of the main goal of social workers is to improve the well-being and lives of the most vulnerable populations, fight against poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and the underserviced population by emphasizing on the person-in-environment and social justice model. The social work profession, considerers the individuals’ internal and external struggles, while working with the individuals to examine their relationships, family, work environment, community, and other things that might impact them and identify ways to help address problems and challenges.
In 2011, anthropologist Ellen Messer acknowledged that in spite of having enough food to feed the entire population on the Globe, more than 100 million people experienced shortages of food and nutritional deficiencies (as cited in Wiley & Allen, 2013, p.92). Thus, it is very important to consider analyzing various factors that influence nutritional status and its relationship with health.
