their performance and my desire to encourage positive health habits became evidently clear. Striving to serve others became part of my goal as I began my career and has driven me to educate individuals on the power of nutrition. Observing the significance of how better nutrition impacted my life drove my desire to develop a healthy lifestyle. Not only did my work on the soccer field improve, but I also formed a better wellbeing that showed the vast potential I had in my everyday life. From that point on, I knew pursuing a career in dietetics was the right career path for me.
My drive for self-improvement on the soccer field led me to an interest in nutrition, but it is now my passion for empowering others through servant leadership that fuels my growth as a health educator. I have felt most rewarded when teaching prevention strategies and mentoring others in the community and with the employees I serve everyday. In my work, I’ve seen children in less fortunate situations desire to educate their family on nutritious food choices, to providing presentations for employees on smart choices while grocery shopping, these valuable experiences have given me the confidence to embark on new challenges as a future registered dietitian.

As part of the Nutrition Performance Team, I organized and created nutritious meals, snacks, and drinks to improve player performance on and off the field. From creating weight gain smoothies to preparing quick energy and high protein snacks, I was able to see the positive effects nutrition made in each player. The UK Football Team gained 250 pounds of muscle and lost 500 pounds of fat from these innovative nutrition approaches. Since a young age, I always felt inclined towards pursuing a career in the health care field; daydreaming about myself working at a clinic or hospital and making a positive impact on someone’s life. When I started college, I decided to major in Biology and explored the different career options the health field had to offer me by shadowing dietitians, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers to find my ideal job.
Keyla Negron is a first generation college student at the University of Connecticut, better known as UConn. She states that being a first generation college student was an accomplishment, but that it brought “all the challenges of trying to succeed”. She started college just like many other new students, not knowing exactly what to study or what to do after graduating. This made Keyla realize that is “one of the positive things” of college because “you have the opportunity to take different classes and discover your likes and dislikes”. In her case, it took her just about three years to discover a passion in nutrition, an area she never had imagined herself studying, although Keyla does realize that she was always “questioning how certain foods affect our body and what defined a healthy food and an unhealthy food”.
I think this project was a great opportunity for me to learn how to educate and guide patient’s in making better nutritional decisions with the help of my using MyFitness Pal. I think MyFitness Pal is an excellent resource for any patient that is interested in improving their nutrition. Nutrition is often neglected by patient 's, therefore, as dental professionals it is important to use the latest technology to attract our patient’s to become more interested in their nutrition. The positive impact of this project has encouraged me to recommend using MyFitness Pal to my patient 's as a hands on activity to help correlate nutrition and the patient’s overall health. This project also allowed me to become aware of the poor food choices I made, which will help to benefit my patient’s that have a similar diet.
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
The late Nineteenth Century saw increased industrial growth in the United States. One of the major developments that led to the increased industrial growth was the expansion of the railroad. The railroad provided infrastructure that made it cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Investors could now build industries in different parts of the country and transport products fast and to a wide network of consumers. Another resource that fostered industrial growth was the influx of immigrants into the United States. During this time, many foreigners were able to come into the country and provide cheap labor for building industries thus reducing the cost of industrialization. In addition, the country was in need of vigorous development to cater for the needs of the growing population at that time.
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.

Based on a variety of personal experiences, I became very interested in the role of foods and nutrition. During my last year of highschool, my favorite who had a successful business succumbed to a strange alliment. He was tired all the time and was diagnosed to live only 1 year. While he didn't have cancer, his bloodwork had many abnormalites the doctors couldn't diagnose. He began to seek out other doctors who ultimately recommended that his see a dietitian. This changed his life. He started to eat low fat foods thats packed in vitamins, quit smoking and drinking and started to exercise regular bases. One year later, he could get out of bed, live as an full energetic person as he had before. This made him inspired to study nutrition in America. I was overwhelmed after I knew his history and never looked at food the same way again. It is clear to me now that how people eat and what people eat is an important factor in acheving optimum health, that just exercise isn't enough.

My undergraduate degree in Human Biology, emphasis in Nutritional Sciences, has given me a foundation of knowledge that could be expanded upon through the Clinical Dietetics master degree and supervised practice program at Grand Valley State University. The ASCEND accredited DPD program at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay fully prepares students, myself included, for a career in the Nutrition field. My professors facilitated learning while meeting the requirements of the certification with a rigorous cutting-edge curriculum. My degree focused on the Human body as a whole, while honing in on nutritional processes, advancements in nutrition research, and the various issues that future nutritional professionals may face. It was a well rounded program that encompassed all facets of the nutrition field with coursework in: community nutrition, food science, quantity food preparation, nutritional biochemistry, life cycle nutrition, and advanced nutrition and metabolism as one of the only undergraduate programs in the nation to teach upper-level concepts in nutrigenomics.
I firmly believe that through earning the credential of registered dietitian nutritionist and contributing to the body of scientific literature, I have a chance to impact the health outcomes of my family, friends, neighbors and future patients, as well as our future generations. I am confident that the Dietetic Internship and Masters of Public Health (DI/MPH) program at University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) is the ideal environment to prepare me in the pursuit of my primary long-term goal of developing a career as a research dietitian. I originally wanted to work in the clinical setting because after taking my science courses, specifically Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, and Medical Nutrition Therapy, I became very interested in the medical aspect of nutrition. I have a background in food service and after starting my independent study with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), I have returned my focus back to this principle. I have realized that I would like my focus to be on preventative medicine/nutrition. I think the best way I can achieve this focus is by working with and educating children. If children can learn proper nutrition while they are young, they can prevent the diseases that arise from poor diet and sedentary lifestyles.

Dietitians and nutritionists also may choose to go into private practice or work as consultants” (Ferguson 190). In addition to endless workplace advantages, if someone specialized in dietetics wants to proceed in their career skill wise, then there will always be opportunities. For example, even those with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics have the opportunity to obtain a master’s degree.
