One of my top priority goals is to have better effective communication. Building and maintaining a good patient relationship is an essential aspect of nursing and effective communication skills are key to achieving this. Without a doubt, patients spend more time interacting with nurses than with any other healthcare professional. The constructive results of successful communication are well recognized and are essential in achieving. The benefits of excellent communication include a sense of care and security, increased healing rates, enhanced levels of patient gratification and greater compliance to treatment options. In addition, productive communication through a patient-positioned method also serves to comfort families that their loved ones are getting the essential treatment. Paying attention to detail is a goal that I need to develop if I am going to go the distance in nursing. Being detail- oriented goes together with being organized, but it takes it to another level. Being detail oriented means that you measure medications accurately, observe closely how your patient is acting and looks you pass through the room at all times. Detail-oriented nurses can often spot signs of decline in a patient before …show more content…
The best nurses have an inquiring mind, are willing to challenge traditional ideas and ask questions. Nursing education doesn't stop at graduation, it continues as long as you are in the nursing occupation. Part of being a nurse is the use of information and the continuance of learning. To help reach my goal, I will make it a point to stay current on education by attending conferences and taking courses available at the nursing job, and joining important nursing organizations. Doing this will give me more knowledge about the philosophy of nursing. By achieving this goal, I am progressing my career and expanding my effectiveness as a flourishing

“Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.
Some career goals I have in order to become a member of the health care team would include graduating high school and college and taking any additional educational courses required to become whichever health field I decide to go into. I will accomplish these goals by studying, doing all my homework, making sure I get a nutritional diet, and getting plenty of exercise to maintain a sufficient amount of energy to perform these tasks. There are multiple careers I am interested in including Registered Nurse, Pediatric Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Military Nurse, and a Paramedic. I go back and forth between these careers all the time, but I know with the help of my friends and family I will be able to make the best decision. The three careers I chose to write about are Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Physical Therapist Assistant.

She explains the importance of patient and caregiver communication, as well as, the characteristics to portray towards a patient. Who am I? I would say I am a hardworking, dependable and committed individual I try my hardest in everything, even if I 'm not good at it or don’t know a thing about it. I am always willing to give it a shot and get out there and learn something new. My motivation to move forward with my career would be my family because they have always been there for me and want to see me succeed in life and I want to show them that they can have faith in me to be the best that I can be and be proud of me for trying to succeed in my career.
According to Boykin “Caring is the foundation of nursing” (Boykin et al, 2011), and it is the nurses’ responsibility to understand what it means to be caring toward patients, which can be achieved through having professional communication skills. Not only does not being able to communicate affect the patient, but also it affects how the nurse is able to do his or her job to the best they can. Smith and Pressman say that the Institute of Medicine has released reports, which stress, “good communication is critical to ensuring safe and reliable nursing” (Smith & Pressman, 2010). Bad communication skills have the potential to be more dangerous to the patient and can in tern make a life-threateni...
Interpersonal communication within the field of nursing is imperative in all areas to deliver a holistic positive outcome in patient care. Specifically, active listening, questioning with intent and reflective feedback ascertain an understanding of a patient’s health, illness, and healthcare. Active listening allows the patient to convey their concerns and presents the nurse with an understanding of the patient when implementing a personalised care plan. Questioning with intent builds an appreciation of the situation, and reflective feedback promotes improvements to enrich work ethics of the nursing cohort. Listening actively involves many different styles whereby information is gathered through verbal and non-verbal communication. Questioning
Furthermore it’s very important not to judge the patient pertaining to what they may have to say. Good communication helps nurses build a relationship with their patient. Linking my personal experience from the clinical area relates to the practical side of nursing. Learning is considered a long term goal as it helps in continuity and evolution professionally (Thibault, 2011). It is important for me to be updated for best possible care provision. I will achieve this by developing interest to study towards attainment of highest levels of education for example PHD programs, attending education forums hosted by different universities, workshops and health seminars. My other long term ambitions include joining nurses’ professional organizations, administration duties and management skill acquisition and job promotions.
Effective communication skills are important to any profession, but in nursing, they can make the difference between life and death. Good communication skills are essential for good leadership and management (Catalano, 2015). Nurse leaders will set the tone for their entire department in regards to communicating with each other, with patients and families, and with physicians and any other members of the health care team. This includes everything from sharing progress updates on patients to resolving conflict between coworkers. When nurse managers recognize this, they can use their influence to improve communication throughout the unit. Nurses must be able to help patients understand their medical issues and provide them instructions about
I chose these goals because I believe that they are relevant to my current professional role as a registered nurse (RN) staff and to my future career as a nurse leader. My first goal will assist me in understanding the different quality improvement goals and outcomes in the institution; hence, motivating me as a nurse to advance my current practice and deliver better patient care. Moreover, this will increase my knowledge on prevalent evidence-based practices that I can utilize someday to conduct my own quality improvement research. My long-term career goal is to advance my profession and become a family nurse practitioner. Since I want to manage my own clinic in the future, my second goal is directed to learning about the responsible handling

Through this experience, I have become a better nurse. I am more aware of key strategies that I can use with my patients who are unable to clearly verbalize their needs, and I have a broader understanding and increased appreciation for communication. This is something many take for granted every day, and it is such an important factor in fulfilling our needs. Without communication, nurses are unable to provide care to patients because the nurses do not know what the patient’s needs are. Therefore, as nurses, it is extremely important and our responsibility to efficiently communicate with all of our patients each and every day.
The term ‘Therapeutic communication’ identifies the way in which a nurse and patient interact, with the main focus being on advancing the emotional well-being of a patient; (Sherko E., et al, 2013) nurses will use this to deliver support and information to Edna. Effective communication skills are essential within nursing and are often seen as one of the main skills necessary for nurses to support patients and their families (Bramhall E, 2014). A more specific definition of nursing is “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human responses, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (Doenges, Moorhouse, & Murr, 2016, p.1). As nurses, we must utilize the nursing process and be able to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of our plan. In order to create a plan of care, nurses must consider the patient’s opinions and thoughts, meaning that the nurse must engage with the patient and build a relationship with them. However, the patient is not the only person that we are forming a relationship with, but also the family members. Unfortunately, many nurses fail to engage with their patients according to a study carried out by Amorim et al. (2017). Creating a relationship with the patient and their family is an important part of creating a care plan with mutual goals. In addition to having a relationship with the patient, nurses must also be able to effectively collaborate with other health care providers in order to help create the most effective plan of care for the
