I chose these goals because I believe that they are relevant to my current professional role as a registered nurse (RN) staff and to my future career as a nurse leader. My first goal will assist me in understanding the different quality improvement goals and outcomes in the institution; hence, motivating me as a nurse to advance my current practice and deliver better patient care. Moreover, this will increase my knowledge on prevalent evidence-based practices that I can utilize someday to conduct my own quality improvement research. My long-term career goal is to advance my profession and become a family nurse practitioner. Even though I have only been a nurse for about one year and a half, I have gained crucial experiences that enhanced my overall potential as a leader. When I was still an associate student, I demonstrated leadership qualities in the classroom and clinical settings. I was a senator in the Student Government Association (SGA) and an active member of the Louisiana Student Nurses Association (LSNA). Moreover, I utilized my creative-thinking skills to initiate and design pivotal projects in our school, which included a mentoring tool and clinical guide that conveniently fits in a pocket. Once I started my first work as a RN in a fast-paced medical-surgical unit, the fears and challenges of being a novice nurse overwhelmed me for a while. Nonetheless, I was eager and determined to learn new skills and techniques from my preceptor and fellow nurses. Not long after, I was already working on my own pace and managing my patients’ care effectively. Moreover, I showed initiative by undertaking small tasks in the unit like reminding my fellow staff nurses to complete the core measure check lists, making sure that all computer carts and desks are free of unnecessary supplies, organizing the assignment board, and collecting the nurses’ unit phones at the end of the shift. Although these are simple responsibilities, I believe that they require some degree of managerial and leadership skills. Furthermore, I exhibit my leadership potential in my everyday communication and interaction with patients, families, and other healthcare staff. I always advocate for my patients, even if it means having an awkward discussion with the attending doctor. In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.
Leadership in nursing is a valued skill. Without a strong leader, the entire system can fail. In my shadowing experience with a charge nurse on the telemetry floor, I realized what it means to be a leader on a busy hospital floor. Through this experience, I developed my own personal leadership philosophy, shadowed a strong leader on my unit, and interviewed him on his views of leadership.

Some career goals I have in order to become a member of the health care team would include graduating high school and college and taking any additional educational courses required to become whichever health field I decide to go into. I will accomplish these goals by studying, doing all my homework, making sure I get a nutritional diet, and getting plenty of exercise to maintain a sufficient amount of energy to perform these tasks. There are multiple careers I am interested in including Registered Nurse, Pediatric Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Military Nurse, and a Paramedic. I go back and forth between these careers all the time, but I know with the help of my friends and family I will be able to make the best decision.
