Leadership in nursing is a valued skill. Without a strong leader, the entire system can fail. In my shadowing experience with a charge nurse on the telemetry floor, I realized what it means to be a leader on a busy hospital floor. Through this experience, I developed my own personal leadership philosophy, shadowed a strong leader on my unit, and interviewed him on his views of leadership.
Personal Leadership Philosophy As a nursing student, I try to be a good leader in as many situations as possible. My personal philosophy is that to be a good leader, you also must be a good follower. If you cannot trust and rely on those that work around you, then it will be impossible to oversee them in the long run. It is vital to listen to other’s opinions and ideas because they may have thought of something that you did not. Having this humility to listen to those you oversee, can change entire problems and create solutions that were not there before. …show more content…

I am not afraid of a challenge, but I am also not afraid to ask questions to those that know more than me. In my future careers, I hope to work for a leader that allows their followers to have some freedoms. I do not wish to work for someone that is a micromanager, someone who tries to control every aspect of a situation. It is important to me that I work for someone who lets me do my job, but is there for me when I need their help. I understand that everyone has a different style of leading, and I am excited to see how this shapes my style as a future
