I have always wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl, seeing both of my grandmothers working in a hospitals and always helping everyone in need. My goals in becoming a nurse is just the basic foundation of just helping people who physically cannot help themselves. I want to be able to shed light in people's lives who are losing it because of their situation. I feel as nurses is the backbone in the hospital. The nurses are there day in and day out with the patients, holding their hands and walking them and their families throughout such a difficult time. The idea of a being a nurse has always been a driving force in my life. Throughout my Licensed Vocational Nursing Program I had my first encounters with sick people and the hospital setting. Observing my mentors I witnessed the difference they made in peoples lives. In my Registered Nursing Program I had the privilege of doing clinical rotations at The Veteran Affairs Hospital in Fresno, California. It was here that it was most profound that nurses not only heal the physical ailments of a patient but also those of the mind and spirit. When I was in elementary school teachers would ask students the generic question of what they wanted to be when they grew up. Immediately, I would respond I wanted to be a nurse. Now, I am an undergraduate student in college and still my answer has not changed. As I embark on this rigorous journey to become a nurse, I have started to consider how I will undertake the practice of nursing and what personal values I will incorporate into my professional values. When I am a practicing nurse, I plan to reflect on the role models that inspired me to become a nurse, incorporate my own personal strengths and talents, integrate Gonzaga’s mission into my own values, and contribute to the profession of nursing through social justice.
A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.
Many of the people that know me know that I love serving people, and that I could serve people all day without anything given to me in return. I believe I have been called to go into the nursing profession, so I plan to follow that calling. Some career goals I have in order to become a member of the health care team would include graduating high school and college and taking any additional educational courses required to become whichever health field I decide to go into. I will accomplish these goals by studying, doing all my homework, making sure I get a nutritional diet, and getting plenty of exercise to maintain a sufficient amount of energy to perform these tasks. There are multiple careers I am interested in including Registered Nurse, Pediatric Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Military Nurse, and a Paramedic. I go back and forth between these careers all the time, but I know with the help of my friends and family I will be able to make the best decision. The three careers I chose to write about are Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Physical Therapist Assistant.
I am pursuing nursing because it is a combination of helping and teaching others, applying science, and giving back to society- all while making a good, secure living with plenty of options. To me, the core of nursing is to help patients feel better physically and emotionally as much as possible. In my mind, nursing should focus on improving health and quality of life for patients, both by directly caring for them and by doing research and advocacy. My vision for myself is that as a nurse, I will learn to balance quality with efficiency, to take care of patients comprehensively, to be a good teammate, and to promote the integrity of healthcare.
Who am I? I would say I am a hardworking, dependable and committed individual I try my hardest in everything, even if I 'm not good at it or don’t know a thing about it. I am always willing to give it a shot and get out there and learn something new. My motivation to move forward with my career would be my family because they have always been there for me and want to see me succeed in life and I want to show them that they can have faith in me to be the best that I can be and be proud of me for trying to succeed in my career.
University of Saint Francis is the right college for me and you won’t be sorry you picked me! Last year I had enrolled in a vocational class called Primary Health Care. In Primary Health Care I gained my CNA license and later got a job at a nursing home. Since then I have found a love in caring for people, nothing gives my heart more joy then being there for someone. Whether it be for daily care or someone just needing to sit and talk. Since then I have decided to further my medical education into becoming an RN.
Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a person that someone relied on and trusted. At first I wanted to be a teacher, because I loved interacting with other people. As I grew up, I realized that I loved the relationships that the nurses built with my grandparents when they had to stay at the hospital. That made me realize that nursing was not just about giving people their medications, bathing them, and checking on them every hour. It showed me that nursing can be an opportunity to form relationships, to challenge yourself to your full potential, and also to help make a difference in someone life. I was never one of those who as a young girl wanted to become a nurse, I knew I always wanted to work in health care administration. I will say my journey to become a nurse started after facing some challenging health and personal experience. I lost my father suddenly to heart disease at age 15. My father was my bedrock who at that time always wanted me to become a nurse, but as a teenager I wanted to do my own thing. Not until I experienced a series of hospitalization. One that stood out for me was when I was in the hospital for two weeks getting exchange transfusions, and I almost died. The nurses were incredible. They were angels at my bedside. They encouraged me, worked me through my treatment plan, and explained every detail to me. The nurses were the parents I did not have at my bedside for 24 hours. After discharge, I started to think about a career in nursing. Not too long after this occurrence, I started taking my prerequisites while I volunteered at Bellevue Hospital. After a long journey, I finally became a registered nurse.
Nursing is not like any other career in the world. It takes dedication, strength and courage to be able to pursue the nursing field. Being a nurse isn’t about just taking care of people physically, but mentally and spiritually. As a nurse, we have to have the right mindset and attitude to always be there for our patient when their family isn’t present or nonexistent. Be the one who gives them a hand when a hand has never been offered. Understand their anger and sadness and not take it personally but to take all the pain, hurt or sadness from a patient and turn it into the most positive and encouraging experience we can. Making them feel comforted in whatever way we can until they are back to being well and can function in society.
If you are trying to pursue a career in nursing you should do your research on this field. I have learned so much about what it takes to pursue a career in nursing and that there is so much more to it than just choosing what kind of nurse you want to become, to find out all about nursing you have do all the research possible. There are many roles that a nurse has such as a caregiver, educator, advocate and many more. The practice level of nursing is very broad also, there are plenty of degrees that you can get as a nurse, along with the specialty areas of practice I want to become a pediatric nurse which would be a specialty area. The practice settings of nurses vary from a hospital, community, outpatient, or school there is an endless amount of them.
