To be a nurse means more than being a caregiver; it means being selfless, compassionate and committed to serving patients and their families with top-notch care. Nursing is also a passion and requires a deep desire to care for others both physically and emotionally. My decision to be a nurse stems from this deep desire to care for others. I enjoy helping people and doing what I can to enhance the lives of those around me.I’ve always wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a little girl.Nursing is a lifetime career. It is not just a job. It is a state of being. Nursing is one of the most respected occupations. Nurses have the trust and respect of their clients and others. They are loved and appreciated by all.
This paper explores the personal philosophy I have as a nursing student and what I intend to convey throughout my nursing career. A philosophy is “an analysis of the grounds and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.). Before entering into any profession it is important to evaluate your personal philosophy about the profession, as it pertains to values and principles in which believe in to guide your practice. The field of nursing is more than treating a physiological ailment, but it involves providing quality care for the individualized needs of each patient, hence being client centered. My philosophy of nursing integrates the importance of knowledge base practice of medicine, combined with addressing holistic needs of the patient and family, including the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social care (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2010). Additionally, a vital aspect of nursing is effective interpersonal relationships with other healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. Moreover, my philosophy includes the importance the client-nurse relationship to aid in health promotion to prevent illness and increase the level of health of clients.
"Philosophy is an attitude towards life that evolves from each nurses’ beliefs" (Parker, 2001). It is the philosophy that underlies our practice what brings to life our desire to be nurses. Philosophy is essential because it is the natural extension of our interest in knowing the truth (Parker, 2001). A metaparadigm is the widest perspective of the discipline and a way to describe the concepts that concern the profession of nursing (McEwen & Wills, 2014). In this paper, my philosophy of nursing will be discussed through reflection on the four nursing metaparadigm concepts to determine if anything should be added or taken out.
Before I went to College to study nursing, I had a philosophy about it which has evolved as I have gained experience and knowledge. According to …..( ), philosophy is “a theory or attitude held by a person or organization that acts as a guiding principle for behavior (p.sss). Therefore, our nursing philosophy should help us identify what are our priorities in nursing and how we should act as a nurse.
This paper described my perspectives about nursing practice, influential people throughout my journey, and my present personal philosophy of nursing. Reflecting on and sharing my pragmatic nursing philosophy of reason has positively reinforced the care I deliver. Nursing curricula presented an abundance of information regarding nursing ideals, ethics, and personal philosophies. However, the paragons of sound nursing philosophies risk repression as one begins his or her nursing career (Martinsen, 2011). This paper emphasised the importance of reflecting on my nursing philosophy to subsequently strengthen my practice. I believe that this yields implications for my future practice. For instance, as the risk factors towards personal philosophies are introduced, I better appreciate the preventative measures against its demise. Thankfully, nursing research has illuminated the positive correlations between reflection, personal philosophy, and practice outcomes (Ondrejka & Barnard, 2011). As I express my final statement of gratitude, note that my lifelong appreciation will not be exclusively conveyed via words, but through the empathetic care that the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing has taught me to

This paper explains the personal nursing philosophy I plan to convey in my nursing career. I believe a nurse is someone with a calling who dedicates their life to helping those in need. Nursing is more than treating an illness; it focuses on delivering quality patient care that is individualized to the needs of each patient. Nursing is to be able to incorporate the knowledge of medicine and compassionate caring while respecting the integrity of each patient. I believe nursing care should be holistic while honoring patient values. Another important aspect of nursing is the interprofessional relationships, and collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. My philosophy of nursing is to strive to always
Nursing is a multi-dimensional area of care that involves different areas of practice. Each area of practice may focus on an aspect of a patient’s health or a body system. Examples of the available clinical areas include psychiatry, emergency, oncology, medical /surgical, trauma, and critical care.
Reflective practice remains an essential skill for all areas of nursing. Self-reflection provides clarity and purpose for incorporating changes in nursing practice (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2015). As I reflect on my educational journey, this nursing research course provided many opportunities for my professional growth and ignited a passion for integrating evidence-based research to improve patient outcomes on my unit.
I decided to choose nursing as a career seeing that it is a very challenging and powerful profession where we have the opportunity to influence and touch lives through the promotion and maintenance of health and well-being of individuals and our community. Furthermore, nursing is one of the few professions that help you grow on both personal and professional levels and seeing that it is advancing on a daily basis, the wealth of knowledge to be obtained is limitless. It comes with an enormous responsibility and I am more than willing to take on this
For century’s nurses has become an essential part of patient care. Care is a pivotal principal core of the nursing profession. Caring is a practice that enhances the human spirit and allows nurses to aids patients effectively. Appropriate caring promotes health-giving, bonding with patients, inner peace for patients and families, faith and alleviates psychological or physical illness that an individual experiences during time of sickness. Caring is an important concept for nurses because it gives the gratification to promote and support human wellbeing. In order to become a nurse, there are skills that will be needed such as; communication skills, critical-thinking skills, being compassion, interpersonal skills, and also having leadership skills. Stated in “Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners”, “Many nurses work in offices, hospitals, schools, and clinics. Nurse midwives also work in birthing centers. Some nurses may treat patients in their patients’ homes and they may also travel long distances to help care for patients in places where there are not enough healthcare workers” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 17 Dec. 2015). In a big environment such as hospitals, clinics, and health centers, nurses and doctors work in groups because there are many things that will be going on and working independently will not help the process go any faster in the workplace. My boss is the nurse manager that tells me what do I need to do to help the patient or tells me what they need to help the patient. My coworkers will be the other nurses that’s in the workplace and also the doctors. Nurses that are in the industry, get more responsibilities and get paid more because they are more experienced and that they took the steps to further their
As the nursing profession moves forward, factors that support nursing education, research, and practice are critical in driving improvement in patient outcomes. This discussion board will explore how the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) contribute to nursing excellence. These two health care organizations use various avenues to impact the quality of nursing care by supporting education, practice, and research (Ohio University).
The nurse’s primary obligation is to the patient and the patient’s family. I believe that my nursing philosophy is readily carried into my professional life and is greatly influenced by the caring theory, as they both would continue to be a factor as I progress into the role of a Nurse Practitioner. I live my philosophy of nursing on a daily basis; therefore, I do not have to be at work to provide nursing care. I embody my beliefs in every situation of my life. Nursing is my life and will forever
