What have you learned about the use of theories and do you have the same feeling about theories as you did at week one? The author feels that she has learned a lot about nursing theories and has applied the theories to nursing practice and case studies. The author learned the types of theories and many famous nursing theorists and the concepts and assumptions of their theories. The types of theories include grand theories, middle range theories, and borrowed theories. Additionally, the nursing theorists and their theories that the author learned include Florence Nightingale’s legacy of caring, Dorothy Johnson’s behavioral system model, Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory, Martha Rogers’ science of unitary human beings, Madeleine …show more content…
Leininger’s theory of culture care diversity and universality, Jean Waton’s theory of human caring, Katharine Kolcaba’s comfort theory, Joanne Duffy’s quality-caring model, Pamela Reed’s theory of self-transcendence, Troutman-Jordan’s theory of successful aging, and Barrett’s theory of power as knowing participation in change. The author do not have the same feelings about theories as she had at the first week. The author only learned some general information about nursing philosophy and nursing science on the first week of this semester. As the author learned more theories and their concepts, she started putting pieces of puzzle together to understand the whole picture of nursing theories. Would you now use a theory or concept of a theory in your everyday practice setting or in your everyday lives? The author will use a theory or concept of a theory in her practice.
As a matter of fact, the author already used two nursing theories in her practice. The two nursing theories are Troutman-Jordan’s theory of successful aging and Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory. Understanding Roy adaptation model of the Troutman-Jordan’s theory helps the author to provide an individualized care to patients because the author understands now that each patient has different perceptions of integrated, compensatory, and compromised life processes. Furthermore, Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory guides the author to polish her care planning skills. Four constituent theories within the self-care deficit nursing theory facilitates the author to develop a meaningful, comprehensive care …show more content…
plan. Would you practice differently today knowing this new knowledge?
The author thinks that she will use the theories that she learned in this class to improve the way of practice. Nursing theories and the concepts of the nursing theories are valuable pieces of philosophy that the author learned. The author will apply the knowledge that she learned in this class to her daily nursing practice. The goal of using the knowledge of nursing theories and the concepts of the nursing theories is to promote an optimal outcome of nursing
care.
The nursing profession is considered both an art and a science. An example of the science of nursing is the theory and evidence based practice guidelines (EBP), which influence a nurses practice. The art of nursing is fluid of bringing science and patient care into nursing practice. Nurses in all levels of nursing educational programs should study nursing theory. According to Eun-Ok (2015) theory evaluation has declined and it is essential to developing nursing knowledge; which, leads to the development of nursing discipline. Nursing theory should be continually evolving as current health care trends evolve. The best way to accomplish this is through incorporating theory in academia and nursing

Since its establishment as a profession more than a century ago, Nursing has been a source for numerous debates related to its course, methods and development of nursing knowledge. Many nursing definitions and theories have evolved over time. Furthermore it is in a constant process of being redefined.
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.
To make good nursing decisions, nurses require an internal roadmap with knowledge of nursing theories. Nursing theories, models, and frameworks play a significant role in nursing, and they are created to focus on meeting the client’s needs for nursing care. According to McEwen and Wills (2014), conceptual models and theories could create mechanisms, guide nurses to communicate better, and provide a “systematic means of collecting data to describe, explain, and predict” about nursing and its practice (p. 25). Most of the theories have some common concepts; others may differ from one theory to other. This paper will evaluate two nursing theorists’ main theories include Sister Callista Roy’s
Nursing theories are actions care that a nurse provides to a patient to prevent a sickness, maintain and promote health. Many of the theorists contribute to a frame work or a blueprint of how nurses should provide care to patients. Many these theories are part of nursing care and most of them they go hand in hand. Nursing theory aims to describe, predict and explain the phenomenon of nursing (Chinn and Jacobs1978).Nursing is apprehensive with laws and principles governing the life processes and functioning of sick or well human beings. Nursing theories are beneficial in understanding the knowledge of nursing and its application (Smith and Liehr, 2008).

One of the theories of nursing is Dorothea Orem’s self-care theory, also called the self-care deficit theory. Nursing theories are important for several reasons. The profession is strengthened when knowledge is built on sound theory (Black, 2014). Theory is important for reasoning, thinking, decision-making, and supporting excellence in practice (Black, 2014). Dorothea Orem’s theory is a conceptual model that provides a structure for critical thinking in the nursing process (Black, 2014). A conceptual model provides a comprehensive and holistic perspective of nursing (Black, 2014). Orem published her theory in 1959 and continued to develop her model, eventually formalizing three interrelated theories: theory of self-care, theory of self-care deficit, and theory of nursing system (Black, 2014). The focus of Orem’s model is the patient’s self-care capacity. The process helps to design a nursing process specific to each patient that will provide for the self-care deficit of the patient (Black, 2014). Self-care deficits exist when the patient has limitations and the self-care requirement is greater than he patient’s capacity (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009).
The advanced nursing practice theory-driven role analysis describes the traditions of nursing, principles, and processes that guide the practice. Additionally it will discuss the fundamental components of patient-centered caring. The nursing metaparadigm in the new worldview as unitary caring paradigm, relationship of the concept teach, and framework from Leininger with cultural care diversity and universality, and Swanson with her theory of caring with five processes of caring: knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintain belief.
The nursing profession has develop gradually and greatly over time, moving from one concept to another dependence upon total medical direction providing basic care into an independent practice modality with its own nursing theory practice, nursing models, and distinct nursing interventions. Nursing theories have been developed by a large number of leaders in the nursing field; Ms Roy is a major contributor to the development of professional nursing practice, she is famous for the adaption theory.
Nursing is considered one of the most trusted professions in the world. It is an essential part in the caregiving of sick, injured, and even healthy individuals. Developing a philosophy with any profession is the beginning basis of any practice. The nursing philosophy is usually incorporated from the science of nursing. That is because the field of health care is constantly changing, which causes the need of better competence in the health field of providing caring (Flagg, 2015). With nursing it starts by the science behind it. Then along with knowledge and experiences, that is when the nursing philosophy is developed. Researching differences between new ideas and cultural differences can then expand the viewpoint into a bigger picture.
The purpose of this theory is very specific to nursing and caring. Watson focused the purpose of this theory to the core concepts of nursing keeping both the patient and environment in mind. Each concept addressed in the theory focusing to promote, prevent, and restore health. The purpose of the theory applies to each of the concepts, assumptions, and factors. Watson implies that caring can assist the person to gain control, become knowledgeable, and promote health
The grand theory to be analyzed in this paper is Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT). The method used to analyze Dorothea Orem’s theory is Walker and Avant Theory Analysis (WAT). Theory analysis is a process of evaluating a nursing theory. The WAT is comprised of seven steps. The steps are defining the origins, meaning, logic, usefulness, details, structure and testability of the theory (McEwen & Wills, 2011). “Critical reflection of a theory determines how well the theory serves its purpose” (McEwen & Wills, 2011, p.95). Therefore, a critical reflection will be applied to the SCDNT. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and critique the SCDNT using the WAT method of theory analysis.
When nursing theory was introduced it solidified nursing as a profession, created a need for research and education and revolutionized nursing practice (McEwen, 2011). Nursing theories provide additional education which creates a cause and effect relationship to support research and improve patient care (Hountras, 2015). Without nursing theories, patient care would be that of unsanitary conditions and unstructured patient care with repeated outcomes regardless
Over the years, there has been countless nursing theories has been developed in the field of nursing, but Lydia E.Halls theory has had a major impact in the nursing field. Hall’s background in psychiatry, rehabilitive care and with the help of her extensive knowledge and experience in the field of nursing, she derived a theory, focusing on the notion that centers on three components of care cure and core. The purpose of this paper is to present and explore the historical evolution of the theory and discuss the purpose of the theory. Lastly, explain the effect of Hall’s theory had on the profession of nursing.
