Techniques and technology are always changing, changed lives occur every day, and no matter what, a nurse is always doing well in his or her community. Proctor explains how nurses should approach nurses with compassion, “Patients in hospital are often vulnerable, worried, in pain, and missing their families and friends. They should feel that they are cared for by friendly, approachable, available, helpful and informative staff who can listen to them, offer them advice, protect their dignity, anticipate their anxieties and act in appropriate ways.” (Proctor). She explains the importance of patient and caregiver communication, as well as, the characteristics to portray towards a patient. In nursing, the patient is often viewed as the main priority of the nursing staff. The nurse works to provide care for the patient based on the patient 's admitting diagnosis. However, the patient must be looked at as a part of the greater system they exist in such as their family or home environment. While the patient may be ill due to a bacterial infection or virus, their family environment also plays a role in their overall health and wellness.
Preheim, Armstrong and Barton (2009) suggest that the core of patient care is the therapeutic relationship between nurse and patient. When done effectively with a caring attitude, individual patient needs are verbalised, trust is formed and collaborative health decisions can be made. Webster (2013) explains that therapeutic relationships include the demonstration of respect and compassion while listening to the patient. Webb (2011) explains that the nurse has a responsibility to interact, educate, and share information while genuinely having the patient’s best interests at the heart of the care. Nursing is a profession that can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. Some of the challenges are easy to overcome but others are complicated for the nurses to handle. There were only two nurses on the floor. Walking in that morning I can tell the atmosphere
As health care providers, nurses strive to instill confidence in their patients and their loved ones. A nurse is respectful to their colleagues as well as their patients. Nurses promote patients’ independence, patients can be confident in the knowledge that a nurse will do what is best for them, respecting their privacy and dignity. This means that a nurse does not share the patient information for personal reasons nor does the nurse get involved in a patients personal relationship if it is not medically relevant (NCSBN, 2011).
Nurses today need to have excellent communication skills. Receiving information from patients is the most important aspect of nursing. If nurses are unable to communicate with their patient then they would not be able to have a relationship with them. Communication is where two or more people interact with each other, by using sounds and words, this is verbal communication. Some individuals have different behaviors where they try to express themselves to others without using spoken words, this is non verbal communication. Once nurses have the proper communication tools, techniques and evidence based practice, when communicating with their patient, they would get the necessary information needed from the patient to properly diagnosis them.
The nurse in today's society provides different services to the healthcare community. Taylor (2011) lists the common roles of the nurse as follows: communicators, educators, researchers, advocates, collaborators, and caregivers. The communicator role of a nurse involves “effective interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills to establish and maintain helping relationships with patients of all ages in a wide variety of healthcare settings” (Taylor, 2011, pg 11). Patients look to nurses for information and communicate better with them because they are the most hands on role in the healthcare setting. As an educator, the nurse is responsible for assessing and evaluating individualized teaching plans for patients and their families (pg
Transitioning from the role of a registered nurse to that of a BSN nurse requires little change is the overall nursing scope of practice. Nurses are an equally important part of each client’s life. Nurses provide stable care to each client, answers their questions, gives medications and treatments, and assists with medical procedures. They also have the responsibility to explain to clients and family members what they should and should not do as they go through treatment and recovery. Nurses must quickly respond to patients needs. Every individual nurse has his or her own unique way of caring. There are so many ways to show caring that the possibilities are never ending. Nurse’s support, comfort, and help allow the patients to recover to the best of their ability. Their experiences in dealing with different patients that have unique situations on a daily basis helps the nurses become better caregivers. Therefore, every nurse is capable of demonstrating care in their respective environments.
In the healthcare setting, a systematic process to ensure maximum care and maximum recovery in patients is needed, which is called the nursing process. This process consists of four steps: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation (Walton, 2016). The nursing process is important to ensure quality care and to get the preferred outcome. In the nursing process, critical thinking is used to recognize the issue and come up with a logical solution to solving it. One important aspect of the nursing process is that the plan is not set in stone; it is meant to be manipulated in order to better suit the patient. Nurses must be able to think critically in order to recognize the issue, develop a way to correct it, and be able to communicate the issue to others. Throughout the nursing process, critical thinking is used to determine the best plan of care for a patient based on their diagnosis.
