Having a good career after graduating is what I am looking forward to and is what I am trying to achieve. With the passion of working in communication and media industry, I had searched for different media companies and organizations that provide internship program for college students a few months ago. NBCUniversal was one of the companies that left the greatest impression for me with just the information provided on the website. NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation, “is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news and information to a global audience” (NBCUniversal). This is a great choice for anyone who wants to work in communication and media …show more content…
Spending time learning about NBCUniversal helps me to have a deeper look at how everything works here, and to know whether this is a right place for me. When we look at the website of NBCUniversal, we can get to know and understand the people of the company and what they value. NBCUniversal has a separate website called nbcunicareers.com for careers that provides all information about job opportunities, internship programs, and about the working environment of the company. NBCUniversal values a collectivistic culture. It is indicated clearly in their credo that they emphasize teamwork, believe in treating people the right way, and they do not take themselves too seriously (NBCUniversal). They believe that when they work together, they will be smarter, more dynamic, and better. In the credo, they use “we” to indicate NBCUniversal and “our people” to represent the employees. NBCUniversal also values diversity and inclusion, the factors that play the significant roles in the media industry. In each of the job descriptions, they always state an important statement: “NBCUniversal’s policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, …show more content…
Each program has different skill requirements and expectations for the applicants. However, I hope to gain and improve these skills during my time at UMass Amherst. For the Communications and Media Relations internship program, “Public Relations, Communications, English and Journalism majors are encouraged to apply” (NBCUniversal). The interns are expected to have “exceptional writing, interpersonal skills, a basic understanding of all mass communication platforms, particularly social media.” These are the skills that can be gained and improved by not only participating in different Communication courses, but also by engaging in social events and activities at UMass. For the News internship program, the requirements are a bit different. News are updated every second and it requires accuracy. Thus, interns are expected to have “up-to-date knowledge of the news, and can function in a fast-paced environment driven by speed and accuracy” (NBCUniversal). In order to acquire these skills, I need to create a daily habit of updating the news. This habit will also help me to expand my knowledge about different issues, and to know what is going on around the
I found it so cool that our degree could be used in such an interesting way, which was something that I was surprised about a lot while researching. A Communications degree is very versatile. This was very apparent when I asked my professors what careers past graduates of the degree have gone onto. Both rattled off tons of different jobs in the media and corporate sectors. I was very
You have to have study background information in order to be prepare for programs or interviews. Identify stations, and introduce or close shows, using memorized scripts or by reading the little tv right beside the camera. Interview the show’s guest about their opinions and see what they think about current or upcoming events. They would have to make promotional appearances at public or private events in order to represent their current or past employees. They have to cover specific events, go into the field of important news or games that a really big deal. The hour of employees are all different because they all work at differe nt time som...

Although I am not certain with a specific career, a communications degree will prepare me for a wide range of jobs because communication serves as the backbone for any organization. The major requirements along with the four specialization options at Rutgers, will offer me knowledge on a variety of different areas within communications. I will be able to explore my interests while receiving an excellent education. I think it is amazing that I can combine more than one specialization to extend my career options even further. The specific courses at Rutgers such as Communication and Technology, Organization Communication, and Persuasive Communication will assist me with the skills I need to succeed in this rapidly changing, digital world. To benefit myself and my education, I am definitely going to take advantage of everything Rutgers has to offer. I am interested in joining The Association for Women in Communications as well as the Public Relations Student Society of American- both organizations sponsored by the Department of Communications. Joining these
Communication studies was a good pick for me because, although there is always room for improvement, I can still garnish some more knowledge and information to better improve my oral skills. My personality will really fit into the communication department. I have been told about how fun the communication department can be, and how outgoing people are in the department. I initially liked this a lot because I am very outgoing myself and love to talk to people. I feel that I can be able to exhibit concise messages to people, clearly and efficiently.
Internships are becoming the norm in today’s ever changing society. Both paid and unpaid internships allow the intern to learn about a particular field or industry, gain experience in that particular field or industry, and build a network that can be leverage for future good. These benefits combined prove to be very useful and significant to the intern because it’s a differentiator from those individuals who did not have an internship. Given the very competitive job market for recent college graduates, the many benefits of internships have caused many interns to pass up pay in return for the aforementioned benefits. Internships have become so standard in the workplace that the National Association of Colleges and Employers recently reported that 75 percent of employers prefer job candidates with relevant work experience, while more than 90 percent prefer to hire interns who have worked for their organization (Bacon, 2011). When it comes to hiring full-time employees, 42% of graduates with internships who applied for a job received an job offer compared to...
“Never underestimate your own strength. You were born for a purpose and are blessed with the power to achieve it” (Leon Brown). I have this quote printed out and on the wall next to my door so I can see it every day as a reminder to myself. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. We have places where we want to end up and goals we want to achieve. We set these goals and dreams to help us fulfill the purpose we see for ourselves. I believe my purpose is to help people in their times of need. To fulfill my purpose, I will need to use my personal, academic and career goals to create a pathway to get to where I want to be
Besides their journalism classes, sports writers typically write for their college newspaper. Sport information departments at colleges are common place and students typically rely on internships providing valuable experience. 1) Degree seeking students should tailor their academic career by majoring in journalism with a degree level of at least a Bachelor’s. 2) Background experience associated with writing experience and a plethora of sports knowledge is essential for any prospective sports journalist. 3)
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, two extremely important skills for a public relations and fundraising manager are “communication skills and writing skills” (“Public Relations Managers”). I was a part of the speech and debate team for two years and this has made me very comfortable speaking in front of others. I have done very well in my English classes for the past four years of high school and have received A’s every semester. The combination of these two skills would give me a solid foundation for my growth as a public relations
Almost all employers of journalists, no matter the specific field, require a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, communications, or a similarly related field. For a sports journalist specifically, it’s essential to major or at least complete a minor or similar major with a concentration in sports journalism. Some of the top sports journalism schools include Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, Penn State University, the University of Texas at Austin, Michigan State University, and Hofstra University. There are also a couple of universities (Ashford University and Colorado State University) that provide online sport journalism undergraduate and graduate programs. Courses within all of these universities’ programs include introduction to the sports industry, sports media, sports writing and reporting, broadcasting, play-by-play announcing, and public relations. Almost all of the programs at these schools require at least one internship to be completed as
It was not at all what I thought it would be and I honestly realized along the way this is not a department I would want to work in. The desk work and the constant time on the computer really turns me off from working in any department that entails sitting in one spot for six hours. To counter that I did go out to shoot promotional videos and I had the opportunity to go to some events that I would never be able to go to without 6abc, but the time spent at the desk really makes those events less intriguing. I was hoping to do a lot more on camera projects when starting this internship, but I spent a lot of time behind the camera which I was not used to. I do think that having this internship was very important because it taught me a lot about how much goes into promoting a news station. I now appreciate all of the people that aren’t on television because they do most of the dirty work. Our talent do write some of their stories, but their job seems a lot more relaxing than some of the other employees. I loved interacting with the talent more than anything because I hope one day to be in their shoes. Adam Joseph is such a sweetheart and I am honored to have worked closely with him on projects along with all of the 6abc talent. Watching them with fans at events make me even more driven to be the best I can be and get a fan base like they all have
In 2012, eighty-four percent of Santa Clara University graduates who responded to a survey from the Santa Clara University School of Engineering obtained one or more internships during their undergraduate studies. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees. As defined by InternNE.com, an internship is any carefully monitored service or work experience that may be evaluated for educational credit in which an intern or student establishes learning goals and reflects on his or her learning experience in relation to achievement of the stated goals. Internships should first be examined that, when implemented at fullest potential, these opportunities can provide companies and students with a competitive edge in today’s business world. Subsequently, it can be shown that internships assist organizations and companies with temporary or seasonal project and task completion. Lastly, internships will be clarified as to how they allow students to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. From reviewing an ample amount of research, internships are beneficial and advantageous to the success of a young student, as well as companies.
With the utmost enthusiasm, I would like to express my interest in “The View” Production Internship for Fall 2018 position with Disney ABC Television Group. During my free time, anyone can find me watching YouTube clips of “The View” over and over as if I haven’t already seen them once or twice before. My interest in talk show production began in 2012 when my friend and I decided to produce and host our own talk show on Youtube called “The Continuous Conversation”. Our target audience was female and male millennials and we discussed current events, entertainment news, and social debates. We were able to garner a substantial amount of viewers and I fell in love with being able to help other millennials deal with life through our open conversations.
As a communications major, I plan on knowing media literacy inside and out to the best of my ability.
