The theme for National Public Health Week 2015 is, ‘‘together we can create the healthiest nation in one generation.’’ National Public Health Week occurs in the first full week of April each year, and it is a time that us as students and health care workers should show our community what public health is really all about. Health care workers can show improvements in technology, current safety measures and major changes in the delivery of our health care system. Public health protects and promotes the health of the people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play (APHA, 2015).

Need: There is a need to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases in every community. Our lack of raising awareness and preventing this disease has contributed to the alarming HIV rates in the world. In 2011, Tennessee was ranked 15th among the 50 states in the number of HIV diagnosis.

During the second session, I will conduct the passive straight-leg raise assessment and the Thomas test, along with the trunk flexor, trunk lateral, and trunk extensor endurance tests, in an effort to identify any abnormal muscle tightness or weakness that can be addressed with the exercise program. I will use the results from these assessments to establish Barbara’s baseline levels of flexibility and core strength for comparison with future assessments to determine program effectiveness. In their initial conversation, Barbara identifies her primary objective as weight loss and indicates that she is motivated by tracking her results, so I have decided to take body composition and circumference measurements so we can track her progress toward her goals. During the assessments, Barbara was able to complete all of the fitness tests without complications. Rather than compare her scores to “norms,” I decided to simply record her scores to use as baseline values when measuring progress during future assessments, and to help with program
The number of fundraisers and 5k walks increase over the years, but this doesn’t help others in finding ways that would help them prevent in having a health issue. As health issues arise in America, our knowledge of the issues should also be increasing. One health is a concept of bringing together human, animal, and environmental health. That is a further step of the control of infectious disease. Over three decades, epidemic of new infectious diseases has occurred more often. Many unknown diseases such as Lyme disease, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Nipah virus disease, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were not isolated before 1982. Moreover, growth rate of antibiotic resistance and re-emerging infectious diseases such as rabies and food-borne diseases are occurring nowadays. Where do these diseases come from? How can they be detected early? The answers are in the One Health which is a prevention strategy. In this report, it will be highlighted a brief explanation
Public health England has made an improvement to the nation’s health and has reduced health inequalities. They have done this by protecting the public’s health from infectious disease and other hazards to health also, through improving the public’s health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities by improving population health through sustainable health care services and to build the capability of the public health system. As a conclusion, it is important that people know the danger of HIV/AIDS and actions to prevent more lives to be at risk should be taken. Especially when there is still no cure that is yet to be found, this disease should be eradicated by creating awareness to the public about the HIV/AIDS. In addition to that, the preventions for the disease should also be a common knowledge to the people around the world.
One of the arguments against installing a program of required exercise classes is that in order to get the full health benefit from the program some of the responsibility would have to depend on the student and their attitudes. Universities cannot force students to lead healthy lives. This is a true statement because not all students would take full advantage o...
Physical movement has never been more imperative in the United States than it is today. The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition finds that only one out of three grown-ups in the United States is getting the suggested measure of physical activity every week. More than 78 million U.S. grown-ups and around 12.5 million children and young people are considered to be over weight or obese. Getting the motivation to start a work out schedule can be an overwhelming, undertaking, particularly with diversions like TV, fast-food eateries, and sugary snacks accessible at all hours of the day.

At scholarship day, I focused on posters that were made by various nursing students that focused on things related to exercise and nutrition. No matter what population you work with in healthcare these are very prevalent topics that affect many aspects of life. The first poster that I focused on was titled “Community Based Health Education: Exercise in the Workplace.” For this research the students visited the employees of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. Their main goal was to educate on and improve health and to encourage exercise. The main population consisted of African American females over the age 50. The problem the students found was the employee’s had a lack of resources to maintain an active lifestyle. Their goal was to provide
In today’s world filled with technology, distractions, and easy-to-access transportation, it may be difficult to see why exercise is necessary. However, staying fit and healthy is a way to live longer, build confidence, and become motivated; by seeing the potential benefits, a person can propel themselves to continuously live an energy-filled and rewarding life. People can feel the benefits of exercising the day they start, and with continuous effort, can feel the advantages for the rest of their lives.
The emergence of HIV/AIDS is viewed globally as one of the most serious health and developmental challenges our society faces today. Being a lentivirus, HIV slowly replicates over time, attacking and wearing down the human immune system subsequently leading to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) at which point the affected individual is exposed to life threatening illnesses and eventual death. Despite the fact that a few instances of this disease have been accounted for in all parts of the world, a high rate of the aforementioned living with HIV are situated in either low or medium wage procuring nations. The Sub-Saharan region Africa is recognized as the geographic region most afflicted by the pandemic. In previous years, people living with HIV or at risk of getting infected did not have enough access to prevention, care and treatment neither were they properly sensitized about the disease. These days, awareness and accessibility to all the mentioned (preventive methods, care etc.) has risen dramatically due to several global responses to the epidemic. An estimated half of newly infected people are among those under age 25(The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic). It hits hard as it has no visible symptoms and can go a long time without being diagnosed until one is tested or before it is too late to manage.
The problem of HIV has been a growing concern around the world, but in no country has HIV had a greater effect on the population than in South Africa. Research has found that there are approximately 6.4 million people infected with HIV in South Africa, giving the country an overall infection rate of 12.2%(Shisana et al., 2014). This makes South Africa the country with the world’s highest rate of HIV-infected people. New infections occur at an approximate rate of 100,000 cases per year (Republic of South Africa, 2012). While other countries have managed to slow the spread of HIV, in South Africa, the problem has become a major public health concern.
It is for people who want to improve their health and lifestyle through a fun and positive way. The audience doesn't necessarily need to be extremely fit or in good exercising condition. The audience needs to motivate each other and actually want to become healthier, both out and internally. That’s one of the attitudes the audience can have. Another way the audience can see my proposed solution and presentation is by just being informed about a problem our community is facing today. People who want to know about a problem to help prevent it or just simply be aware of it. This will hopefully improve people's lifestyles in a way, so we should get everyone who wants to change for the better. It will only be a small change, a small improvement, but it will all be worth it in the end. The audience is for anyone who wants to change their health for the better or someone else’s or anyone who wants to be given information about this problem and wants to know ways to solve
