The theme for National Public Health Week 2015 is, ‘‘together we can create the healthiest nation in one generation.’’ National Public Health Week occurs in the first full week of April each year, and it is a time that us as students and health care workers should show our community what public health is really all about. Health care workers can show improvements in technology, current safety measures and major changes in the delivery of our health care system. Public health protects and promotes the health of the people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play (APHA, 2015).

The college students at Tennessee State will help us reach our gal statement in the dorms and apartments by posting fact sheets about HIV/AIDS in their hallways and passing out condoms to each student on campus.
Need: There is a need to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases in every community. Our lack of raising awareness and preventing this disease has contributed to the alarming HIV rates in the world. In 2011, Tennessee was ranked 15th among the 50 states in the number of HIV diagnosis.
Many students at Tennessee State University have unprotected sex and put themselves at risk for developing HIV. This explains why raising awareness and prevention is so important to this community. Some facts by (aids.org, 2014) about HIV:
• About 1 in 4 new HIV infections is among youth ages 13-24.
• 1 in 8 living with HIV are unaware of their infection.
• More than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection, and almost 1 in 8 (12.8%) are unaware of their infection.
• By race, blacks face the most burden of HIV.
• Homosexual men or men who have sex with other men, are most seriously affected by HIV.
• In 2012, 13,712 people living with AIDS died.
• There are 50,00 new HIV infections per
