At scholarship day, I focused on posters that were made by various nursing students that focused on things related to exercise and nutrition. No matter what population you work with in healthcare these are very prevalent topics that affect many aspects of life. The first poster that I focused on was titled “Community Based Health Education: Exercise in the Workplace.” For this research the students visited the employees of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. Their main goal was to educate on and improve health and to encourage exercise. The main population consisted of African American females over the age 50. The problem the students found was the employee’s had a lack of resources to maintain an active lifestyle. Their goal was to provide …show more content…
They also discovered that due to their office jobs, sitting 10 hours a day on average, they were at high risk for inactivity. If the employees were encouraged to exercise while at work they would have a decreased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. One of Healthy People 2020’s goals is to “Improve health, fitness, and quality of life through daily physical activity.” These students who went to speak to the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, taught the employees the risk factors of inactivity, and the benefits of physical activity. They demonstrated exercises that the employees would be able to and gave them informational sheets on both these things to help give them something to reference back to. The exercises that were taught to them consisted of exercises they could do while they were at work. Small changes they could make such as taking the stairs, or things they could do while in their chair or office such as squats, or arm curls. Overall, the employees responded well, they participated and stated that they found the information taught to be useful. Some suggested that the importance of healthy eating and drinking water be added in the
When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
...ter for obese individuals than for average weight individuals. The healthier workers are, the fewer medical services they use. The five leading causes of death in the U.S., heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes — are directly linked to unhealthy lifestyles. Clearly, encouraging healthful habits presents an opportunity to improve workers’ well being, reduce the need for medical services and help control costs.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. It is the nursing process and critical thinking that separate the LPN from the unlicensed assistive personnel. Judgments are based
Based on our assessment of Talbot County, Georgia, we believe the following two community nursing diagnoses are valid for members of the community: physical inactivity related to lack of knowledge as manifested by Talbot County’s obesity rate of 34.7% and physical inactivity related to limited community resources as manifested by lack of safe exercise facilities, sidewalks and parks with walking trails. While both community nursing diagnoses are pertinent to Talbot County, we believe physical inactivity related to lack of knowledge as manifested by Talbot County’s obesity rate of 34.7% would be given the first priority. Without any understanding of the importance of physical activity community resources may not be utilized. Therefore, educating the community on the importance of physical activity cannot be stressed enough. Based on a study conducted, knowledge deficits were linked to a lack of physical activity in socially disadvantaged communities (Clark, 1998). Unfortunately, rural communities tend to have lower education levels (Clark, 1998). Rural Georgians are less likely than their counterparts to complete high school or to complete a bachelor’s degree (Vinson, 2013). In Talbot County, only 47.2% of the population graduated from high school, 20.6% had some college or an associate’s degree, and only 5.1% had a bachelor’s degree (Vinson, 2013). Also contributing to the lack of knowledge on the importance of physical activity is limited community health resources to facilitate adequate health education on lifestyle activities that promote physical activity within Talbot. Talbot County’s Health Department consists of only one nurse daily and a nurse practitioner who is only available on...
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival” (Aristotle, n.d.)
The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nurses have many jobs and responsibilities and wear many different hats. Nurses can perform at many different levels depending on their scope of practice which is defined by the board of nursing in one’s state of residence. It is important as nurses to understand and follow
The number of fundraisers and 5k walks increase over the years, but this doesn’t help others in finding ways that would help them prevent in having a health issue. As health issues arise in America, our knowledge of the issues should also be increasing. Targeting younger student to learn about health issues help them in the long run as well, but their parents as they go how and announce what they had just been taught at
What is the central component of advanced practice nurses (APNs) direct clinical practice and patient/families?
College life is a time full of fun, friends, activities, classes, and homework. All of these activities however, add up to a busy life style. Being busy is not in itself harmful but when the busyness becomes so great that it turns into stress, problems start to arise. The formation of stress leads to many unhealthy trends, such as lack of sleep, loss of immunity to disease, and a change in personality traits. How then can stress in the busy lives of college students be reduced? The answer is a simple one that has long been known; exercise relieves stress. Colleges across the country need to implement a program of required exercise classes to promote the well being of students.
The third thing I am taking away from this class is the importance of being physically active, a factor that plays an important role in longevity and decreases the risk of premature deaths in people. Furthermore, studies strongly support the theory that physical activities play a significant role in physical activity and all-cause mortality, with people who were physically active being less likely to die throughout the follow-up study period (Fahey, Insel, & Roth 2013). The book also went on to explain that based on the evidence collected, 2.5 hours or 150 minutes of physical activity weekly are appropriate in lessening the all-cause mortality (p. 10).
During my childhood years, I always had a constant interest in the caring of people, and would often play the "Pretend & Play Doctor Kit" and the classic "Operation" boardgame with my brother. While the years have passed by, I often reminisced into wondering what it would be like to be a nurse and if it were for me. Then, a radical event had occurred to me in my last year of high school. Through my school counselor's recommendation to attend a special event and find out if nursing were for me, I met a girl named Cecilia diagnosed with down syndrome and her beloved worrying mother at Tropical Park. The park was fastidiously arranged from a nonprofit sports organization called Special Olympics for all sorts of sportgames, and I was assigned to Cecilia as her partner for a race.
Sedentary lifestyles can cause problems such as getting heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Physical activity plays a huge role in the prevention of these diseases. Inactivity is the main cause for most the common heart problems such as the ones listed above. Becoming active while living a sedentary lifestyle or dealing with heart problems can drastically alter a person’s overall health.Diseases and strokes are the two leading causes of death in the United States” exercise aids in preventing diseases and strokes(CDC 3). Exercise is a tool that can be used to reduce the risks of getting heart disease, stroke, and maintain cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Doctors recommend moderate to intense regular workout, especially for youth. Most cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are all causes of inactivity at some point in our lives. If the inactivity levels are high, the higher chance that person has at dying of these diseases or at a younger age. Because inactivity can lead to death at a younger age, it is highly important to inform youth about healthy lifestyles at a younger
