It is very important for people to do outdoor activities. People are not doing outdoor activities as they should be doing and are getting too attached to technology. People are developing illnesses like obesity or high cholesterol. Becoming sick from the need of outdoor activity is very unhealthy for someone's lifestyle, especially because they prefer to spend even more time with technology. An illness from this problem can strongly change one's lifestyle. It will change someone's lifestyle for the worst and can, later in life strongly affect many people. People are not seeing how outdoor activities can stimulate someone's growth and help them get healthier, both physically and emotionally. All these illnesses can be caused by the need of outdoor activities. They also need a lot of attention because you need to take care of yourself repeatedly and sometimes even do it every day. According to an article from Livestrong, vitamin D helps protect youth from heart disease, diabetes, and bone problems. Outdoor activities will help people get Vitamin D, since given to us from the sun. According to the American Medical Association, two hours people spend glued to the tube on a typical day, risks the development of type 2 diabetes. It will increase by 20% and the risk of heart disease increases by 15%. According to Candice Sathiraboot, 30% of adults spend more than 9 hours a day using a digital device of some kind. Whether it's a smart phone, television, computer, or a tablet. Its evident that too much screen time and not enough time outside can damage someone's health. Not only is this problem strongly affecting people physically, but internally as well. It is for people who want to improve their health and lifestyle through a fun and positive way. The audience doesn't necessarily need to be extremely fit or in good exercising condition. The audience needs to motivate each other and actually want to become healthier, both out and internally. That’s one of the attitudes the audience can have. Another way the audience can see my proposed solution and presentation is by just being informed about a problem our community is facing today. People who want to know about a problem to help prevent it or just simply be aware of it. This will hopefully improve people's lifestyles in a way, so we should get everyone who wants to change for the better. It will only be a small change, a small improvement, but it will all be worth it in the end. The debate over technology being healthy for our children has been a debate that has gone on for years. It appears as though the tragedy that children are missing out on hands-on nature is definitely something we all must learn to accept. Nicholas D. Kristof hits the nail on the head when he suggest that we try to preserve nature but we don’t promote natural activity such as hiking, biking, camping, and “discovering the hard way what a wasp nest looks like”. Kristof does an effective job getting the point across on experiencing nature and limiting technology. He is a father that is destined for his young daughter to know about the outdoors with personal experimentation. Kristof’s intended audience is geared toward people that want their children and themselves to be involved in nature, but they have been consumed with this technological age.
Cell phones in hand, and laptops so small they fit in purses. Computers at our homes insure we can get on the internet and surf the web for answers for anything that may need to know. As the growth of technology has evolved the past twenty years we have become more dependent upon it for everyday things. From alarms, calendars, ‘googling’, counting our steps to make sure we stay healthy, connecting us to our friends and family; simple things that we often take for granted. Though our lives are often ruled by the various technology pieces out there to keep us ‘grounded during the day, some pieces of technology are not healthy for our bodies and minds.
Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
The world is changing with the advancement of technology. People in our society, including teenagers, adults, and elders addicted to computers, television, cell phones, videogames, and cars. This addiction is making them sedentary. Going back in history, the human body is made for hunting, farming, and household work but the advancement of technology is making us sedentary. The sedentary lifestyle is leading increase in chronic health conditions and higher all-cause mortality. Human body is reacting to this change in nature, by being less immune to numerous chronic health conditions.
For example, talking too much over cellphones can damage hearing. According to study in Use of Cell Phone Long Hour Cause Hearing Loss, “Those who used mobile phones for more than four years had more hearing loss in high-frequency ranges in their right ear, the ear most held the phone to, than those who used the mobile phone for one to two years” (Dohheny). Another example is using cellphones for a long period or too much is bad for the eyes. The vision of the eyes can get weaker by looking at the cell phone screen. According to the article Does staring at screens all day really damage your eyes?, found that 61 percent of Americans have experienced eye strain after prolonged use of electronic devices — nearly 2 out of every 3 people (Hill). One of my friends in school was wearing glasses when I saw her one day. I said, “What happened? Why are you wearing glasses?” She said, “My eyes are in pain.” She told me that she had been typing all night on her cell phone. The reflected light that comes from electronic devices’ screens can cause eyestrain because of long-period concentration on the screens. Furthermore, cell phone can also damage the brain and possibly cause brain tumors.
