Importance of Physical Activity Physical activity can be classified in two broad categories, namely the moderate level and vigorous level. Activities that fall into the moderate level include brisk walking, dancing, or low-impact aerobics; activities that fall into the vigorous level include swimming, jogging or sports such as soccer and badminton. With Singapore being a fast-paced society, family bonding is taken with less emphasis. In line with 2014 being the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family , the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) could collaborate more with Ministry of Health to organise more activities that can attain both their aims, of increasing family cohesion and improving the lifestyles of Singaporeans respectively. For instance, instead of annual family bonding days, it could be made into a monthly affair, where families head down to a wide open space (e.g. Marina Barrage) to engage in sports and
Pate et al. (1995) stated that physical activity is needed for health promotion and disease prevention. They also stated that every adult should do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise everyday if possible. Moderate intensity exercising includes activities such as brisk walking and cycling as stated by the Department of Health (2011). They also state that regular physical activity will improve a person’s mental health as it will increase self esteem and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Physical wellbeing is also enhanced by an increase in physical activity. The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2002) found that in developed countries 20% of heart disease and 10% of strokes are due to physical inactivity. Furthermore a lack of physical activity is found to cause 3% of all diseases.

Incontrovertible, physical education programs are getting more attention in the last few years. They are the key to increase teenager’s physical activity levels. Moreover, there are many benefits in the physical education than just having fun, it sharpen overall cognitive abilities and motor skills via athletics. However, what those classes are really trying to promote is the inclusion of a regular fitness activity in our daily routine. Meanwhile, regular fitness activities are “Active living” day-to-day activities, for example, treadmill walking, bike riding and basic daily activities; that is what our parents and ancestors have been doing for most of their lives. These kinds of activities are what our students are not engaging in; rather they are more likely to engage in sedentary activities from playing video games and watching television (The University of Waterloo, 2009). This will, in the long term, increase the risk of virulent diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, and even cancer. Despite all these facts, the physical education programs teaches many personal and social tools to the student, some of t...
This literature review will look into cycling as a means of transportation, for both commuter and recreational purposes, as well as look in depth, the question of just how much can cycling improve both our mental and physical health? The review will examine/critique the statistics that try to prove the affects of physical activity for public health, as well as outline the strengths of each claim and expose the weaknesses. The great philosopher Plato said that the "lack of activity [in society] destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it". This review will outline the dilemma we face in todays society; it ultimately can be referred to, as David Bannister suggests, the fascination with 'distance, speed and time'. For these three qualities are so domineering in our lives today and the effects (both positive and negative) play a substantial part in our lives. The review will critique the writings of scholars such as Tranter, Bannister, Racioppi, Tight and Lindsay as they attempt to define the importance of physical activity for public health.
[Topic Justification] Lack of physical exercises is a public health issue that has led to a considerable increase in the cost of healthcare expenditure. The affected people will be dependent on the society for upkeep and healthcare and, thus, reduce the rate of productivity.
Physical activity is measured by the duration, frequency or intensity level of a specified activity. Moderate intensity (walking briskly, ballroom dancing) Vigorous intensity (jogging, bicycling).
Slide 8: The more times an individual participates in physical activities, the more health benefits they will gain. Taking part in physical activities can prevent health problems that are generally related to aging. Being physically active keeps an individual independent and not having to rely on other people to care for them.
Many studies have come to the conclusion that individuals who participate in health and wellness routines as well as a regular exercise program have a relatively increased degree of energy, lower healthcare bills, much better quality of life along with less stress, as well as improved health. Staying in good physical shape and healthy calls for everyone, to be conscious of their health, to be aware of the key fitness and health components and to follow them.
In the context of physical activity, ecological models have provided a framework to various institution. For example, American, European, and Canadian frameworks, policy statements, and action plans have adhered to the notion that the enhancement of population health demands action that focuses simultaneously on the personal and on the environmental determinants of health: The United States Physical Activity Plan, 2010(http://www.physicalactivityplan.org/); The Integrated Pan-Canadian Active Living Strategy (69); Healthy People 2010 (83); The WHO Global Strategy on Diet, and Physical Activity and Health.
Importance of Physical Activity Epidemiology According to the World Health Organization, health is “the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.” This idea of becoming a healthier version of oneself has continued to gain popularity over the past few decades. This change in public point of view can be attributed to fact that over the past century, the leading causes of dead have shifted from communicable disease to non-communicable diseases. In other words, rather than dying from infectious disease such as pneumonia and tuberculosis, people nowadays are instead dying from chronic diseases such as heart disease.
This is an important area of health because regular physical activity keeps your body functioning properly. If you perform sufficient physical activity, you can manage your body weight better, reduce your risk of heart attacks, diabetes, some cancers, high blood pressure, have stronger bones, joint and muscles while feeling energetic, happy, relaxed and sleep better.
Physical activity should be integrated into everyone’s lives because it has so many benefits. It has such a broad spectrum and there is a wide variety of activities one can do to stay physically active. There are countless sports and games one can take part. Personally, I enjoy running because I find it very relaxing. I also have friends that enjoy running and find a similar enjoyment from running. Physical activity can keep one in shape, stay out of trouble and even prevent diseases like diabetes. There is nothing to hate about physical activity because of these positive benefits.
