I was the kid who never knew what he wanted to do when he grew up. I sat quietly when the question was paraded in front of us in classes, as early as kindergarten. Everyone else seemed to know what they wanted to be- doctors, firefighters, police, and teachers. I had no such illusions. Even watching wrestling as a kid, I never bothered thinking I could do that some day. I was too grounded and realistic. And my love of wrestling faded, just as all my past interests had. My interest moved from baseball to wrestling, to a certain video game, before getting bored of it and moving to another. This was me. I was too careful to dream-worried it would pass, and too ‘realistic’ to dream big. But wrestling came back around to grab my interest. To this day I still can’t remember when or how I saw it again, but this time it wasn’t just rooting for my guy. Eventually, I heard on from an idol of mine, John Hennigan, talk about how his roots were in amateur wrestling and parkour. In a spur of the moment rekindling of my dream, I signed up for parkour and wrestling. I did both within a few hours because I felt like if I waited any longer I would be reminded of those voices telling me that dreams are foolish and to plan for your future. I decided that those voices weren’t wrong- they just needed a different perspective. I had planned for my future. I had good grades, and a few nice extracurriculars to be ready for college. But I also had a second-degree taekwondo black belt, amateur wrestling and jiu-jitsu experience, and an intermediate understanding of parkour to be ready pro wrestling.I decided that the path I knew I wanted to take didn’t conflict with the one I was being told to take.
