Today, many people associate the word “inception” with the award winning Christopher Nolan film, but what does inception really mean? All dreams aside, inception is the time at which something begins. However, Inception is also the title of a rap composed by artist who goes by the name of Logic. Logic, also known as Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, is a rapper from Maryland. Inception is on Logic’s 2012 mixtape, “Young Sinatra: Undeniable”. I admire much of Logic’s work; however, Inception not only resonates within me emotionally with its sound, but I find that the lyrics echo inspiration and motivation that I can relate to personally.
As a child, dreams of becoming something that often times are believed to be slightly out of reach, such as a pro athlete, or a rock star, or an actor are common. My life often revolves around soccer, and my future is based on soccer. Logic’s struggles with rapping parallel my own personal hardships with soccer. I grew up playing soccer because I loved the game. Of course I wanted to go pro, but I was always more of a realist and acknowledged the adversity of becoming a professional soccer player. Similar to Logic, I wasn’t able to convince the rest of me that I was good enough. However, my love for the game drove me to keep training and working hard, despite having difficulty balancing soccer with school and my social life. The love I have for soccer emulates the love Logic has for rap, and just as it did for me, it inspired Logic to continue pursuing his aspiration. By the end of the song, Logic has concluded that he is going to submit his life to rapping. The song marks the inception of a life where he fully believes in himself. He understands his success won’t be instantaneous, although he assures he’ll make it
