How are you Mrs. Griffin? I was just sitting and reading the old assignments that I did a year ago. I couldn't stop thinking about how much I hated writing until you taught me the basic skill of plotting everything down on a piece of paper before I start writing. I have finally adopted a habit that helps me write and think over my topic before I even pick up the pen. Whenever I get an assignment, I always have to read over the assignment a couple of times before I even understand it. For example, our class midterm portfolio assignment -I had no idea on how would I start my letter and to whom I would write. I grabbed the assignment paper and walked around the house a couple of times reading it over and over again so I would not miss anything …show more content…
that was required. I usually love to have soup with alone time, so I can think a little more about the topic. Afterward, I start writing down everything that comes to my brain that has to do with the assignment, even though it will take me like an hour to do. While I am writing, I always like to circle the words that I think will match my topic perfectly and put a line across the ones that do not make any sense. Ever since I have started to adopt this habit, my writing has really improved, and over time, it has helped me become a better thinker. I know everyone has strengths and weaknesses as a writer, but if we improve our weaknesses, they will become our strengths.
I have always loved to write, but I do have some writing deficiencies. My weakness has always been my grammar and punctuation in every piece of writing that I have done, from1st grade to high school, and now in college. Whenever I get my graded paper back and see that I have lost 3 to 5 points on the rubric, most of the time it is over the smallest mistakes. I get really upset afterwards, but I always acknowledge my mistakes and am willing to seek help, so that I can improve my weaknesses. I have seen a huge improvement in my grammar and punctuation ever since I started to fix my graded papers. I am understanding why a sentence may have needed a comma or is missing a coordinating conjunction, which have been my common mistakes. Some of my other writing weaknesses that I have had in the past are now my strengths. For example, including details was one of the hardest things in writing for me, also not understanding what I should put in my writing and what not to put. Every time I would write, I could never explain my wording on a paper or even express my feelings. After a few years of improvement, I have grown out of that weakness, and it has become one of my strengths that everyone loves in my writing. I really feel proud of how much I have grown and seeing the improvements. Soon I’ll start seeing 100% A+ on my papers and look back at my grammar and
punctuation mistakes and feel the same way I do about my strength in writing with details.
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
Foundations of Writing is said to be one of, if not the most, difficult classes offered in the high school. I have thought about why I am taking the class multiple times. I have quite a few struggles when it comes to writing but I also have many strengths. I believe my writing skills can be improved and I can grow tremendously as a writer by taking this class. Good writing is something that is achieved by working hard and practicing a lot.
This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn’t have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn’t understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn’t that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester.
For example, since I was in high school I always had trouble of wring five paragraph written essays and dealing with the grammar issues. However, when I toke this ENG 101 composition class I worried the same issues. But, as I progress each day and month throughout the semester I come to relies that, I gotten better at writing five paragraph essays no problem even though, I had some troubles and struggles on the way. Now I know that my strength is writing five paragraph without worrying and my weakness is still might be a grammar as well as clarity/punctuation as my professor told me after grading my essay so far. Even though, I still struggle with my grammar I know that I can do it know and maybe someday I might be able to write essays without grammars. I have learned many things in my ENG 101 class this
After this course, I feel my ability to write a solid few error essay is higher than originally. The strengths I have developed are brainstorming, organizing, and fan boy usage. I have the skills of developing the main points for each paragraph, and the ability to stay in one person throughout an essay. I have still have weaknesses, but I now have better control over noticing errors. One weakness is commas. Commas tend to be a struggle for me if there is not a fan boy or an appositive in a sentence. A few other weaknesses are detail and agreement. I lack detail to back up my main points, for the first daft, up to the final draft revision. Nowadays there are many people who are going back to study, whether it be improving career possibilities or to change career paths. Therefore, people need to develop different types of study skills to help throughout their learning. In this essay I will be describing a few study skills that could be useful in the path to success during my own studies. I will also be explaining how I will be implementing them into my studies. Also, I will be identify two challenges that I may face during my studies and explaining a few steps that I will use to address them.
I am writing this email to you in regards to my writing skills tests (WST) that I have taken. I have taken the WST five times, but was unsuccessful in passing the test each time. I would like to explain my reasons and concern for this matter in the hopes of receiving a waiver for the WST so I can proceed to take my English 100W course.
There are three writing principles from this chapter in which I would like to further expand my knowledge and improve my skills. They are the following writing principles: the utilization of active voice, utilizing short sentence length and being specific in my writing.
A mentally disabled but diligent female high school student attends a tutoring session at the learning center to work on a classroom writing assignment. We have learned about textual and contextual analysis, beginning steps to learning how to be a better writer, Observation techniques, and critical interpretation. Which before I didn’t know much about any of these topics. In school, I never had a writing class. Of Couse, we would have to write papers for maybe your English class, but you never really had to have it in MLA format. A lot of things are very different for me here than they were at home. I like that fact that we don’t get homework every day and we have a while before our papers or journals are due. For me this was one of my weakness, because I would not like other people to see my flaws in writing. Thinking what if they will think less of me because of my writing skills. I had to stop thinking like that and realize that this is going to happen again next semester of English 102, so I gave my paper to some friends I trust and they gave me feedback and helped correct my stuff. When email or other written communication is sent, it is out there for people to judge. Correspondences not only reflect on the writer, but on their organization as well, so it’s essential to get it right. For my development goal, I decided to improve my written communication skills by completing several courses through our Judicial Online University (JOU). The eleven courses I took were very informative and complex, so I have divided this report into two sections: grammar skills and the writing process.
Prior to taking this class, my writing skills were poor and I struggled in various areas of writing. Being that this class required writing papers, I was greatly concerned with writing perfectly, but I was also excited to learn how to write better and improve my skills. Looking back, however, I have realized how taking this course along with receiving the feedback and advice from both my classmates and tutors has helped me improve as a writer while also increasing the confidence in myself to complete and accomplish future tasks.
