Thesis Statement: While I still need to work on correct punctuation, I learned TIQA and creating an appropriate thesis statement and continue to grow as a writer.
In the first semester, my punctuation skills had improved. I still needed to work on perfecting the rules of punctuation to continue to grow as a writer. A comma rule I quickly learned helping my grammar was adding a comma when you had separated an independent clause from a dependent clause. I learned to add a “comma” after the author’s name. For example, “by Jorge Borges, the narrator’s curiosity…..”. I added in the comma after the author’s name because in the comma rule c3 implied that a comma must follow up a phrase that separated an independent clause from a dependent clause. Learning comma rule c3 had improved the structure of my writing because

instead of having many run on sentences I was able to correctly punctuate.
It improved my writing by becoming easier to the reader to read my paper without difficulty. In addition, I also learned how to correctly punctuate people talking. I learned to add in a “comma” the quote someone had said. For example, adding in a “comma” like “ I needed to learn how to control the tiger, Pi stated.”. In rule c5 it stated, “the comma goes to the left of quotation marks.” By adding this into my punctuation rules I was able to apply this rule in many papers I had for the rest of the semester. It improved my writing skills because it not only became easier to read, but improved my grammar skills that were being graded. In the beginning of the year, when I wrote my first thematic paragraph I had many comma errors. By the end of the semester, I got my paper back with only a few
comma errors. I have been able to improve my comma skills thanks to Mrs. Wagner, but I definitely have more room to perfect my comma rules to continue to grow as a writer. By Mrs. Wagner teaching me how to use the TIQA format when writing a paper, I had grown as a writer. When I came into Mrs. Wagner's class I had a lot of trouble with my structure for my papers. I never knew where quotes should go in the paragraph and where to introduce and analysis the quotes. In the first thematic paragraph I had a quote right after the topic sentence with no introduction or anything. For example, “the discovery of the unknown happened throughout the story. “Look at the illustration closely. You’ll never see it again”. I never explained who said the quote or why I even used the quote. I just put the quote in the paper without doing anything to it. The quote wasn’t able to help my argument only hurt my structure for the paper. Therefore, I started off not knowing how to structure a paper, I had learned how to structure a paper perfectly without many structural errors. After, Mrs. Wagner teaching me how to use TIQA it did not took long before I knew how to structure a quote into my paper. In my most recent paper I applied a quote into my paper using the correct structure. For example, “Thinking about the converters he stated, “We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay.” By learning TIQA, I have been able to expand my writing structure skills which had increased the power of my essays and the overall grade I got on my essays, which continued to improve me as a writer.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
Especially with the help of my professor Ms. Piper. I was still having trouble on material on writing, but she helped me by teaching us the writing process, how to revise our drafts, and how to use outlines to help us. She has also taught us ways of breaking down paragraphs in piece of writing to help us understand what we are reading about. I feel with this new approach it opened my eyes on a way to help me excel on my writing, and reading. I am an excellent writer and reader than I was before. I am not the greatest, but I know if I just keep practicing on what I learned, and also learning I will become better.
Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
Comparing myself from the beginning of the semester to now, I may honestly say I have improved in my grammar usage and punctuations. A prime example of my punctuation problem was seen in my personal narrative essay, “Nevertheless, I was first born here in Honolulu, Hawaii in the pink hospital, but did not stay here long” (Personal Narrative Essay). Within the example, I have an error of overusing commas. The overuse of commas happens to be a horrendous matter of mine. While in high school, my English teachers would
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
I am able to use correct punctuation in my writing. I am able to correctly situate an apostrophe correctly throughout my writing. This is because I have throughout my education learned how to use this punctuation correctly. Additionally, I know where colons and semi-colons are needed when writing an essay or assignment. This is also because I have learned how to correctly use this form of punctuation.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
I never knew how much punctuation errors have affected my grade, until I got feedback on my last essay from my English professor, and she said, “the paper cannot pass due to too many punctuation errors”. After that feedback I begin to think of ways that could help me with punctuation errors. I ran cross some helpful punctuation resources that helped me with my punctuation errors, and they were online resources, some strategies, and the writing lab.
...d myself having in high school. I still tend to be a little too wordy at times, I misplace commas, and I still forget how to properly cite my research sources every now and them. I think I have become a little more meticulous about looking over my papers, however. I make fewer careless mistakes and take more time writing my papers than I did in high school. My points of view are clearer, and I have not been using commas incorrectly quite as often. I hope to continue to improve in the next few years of college as well. I haven?t received an ?A? on a paper yet, so my goal for the next few years of college is to eventually be able to consistently produce papers worthy of ?As.? I would also like to apply my writing more in school by possibly writing for New Morning in the future. I think Introduction to Literature has had a positive impact overall upon my literary skills.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
I still had the typical grammatical errors and sentence fragments, but there were not as many. I could see my writing skills were improving based on me actually taking the instructors corrections and advice into consideration. When I created my revision memo for this essay, I attempted to finally perfect the common mistakes I had made. Making my sentences a little longer
Improving writing skills is critical to the college student’s success across all academic disciplines. Writing has become the key to survival in many fields of study. (Pirš1, Pirš1, & Kesié, 2011) There are several strategies to become an effective college-level writer. An important strategy for a writer is project management. Next, writing with a purpose is an essential step. Another crucial guideline is following the mechanics of writing. Finally, utilizing online resources provides the writer invaluable knowledge and references.
It has allowed me to understand that having clear and well developed thoughts is important. When I write I tend to write in fragments, which can lead to misunderstandings and a confused reader. It also shows that lack of grammatical discipline that I have, but have every intention of improving. That it is better for me, personally, to write down all my ideas at once and then come back then to write in little bits. It has affected the way I read only slightly, but still in a significant way.
A major flaw that I discovered in this class in my writing was my inability to write a proper and creative thesis statement. To me thesis statements are the most difficult things to write in English. I always seem to write the thesis statement to sh...
