During week one of EDC131 we learned that the way in which we use language to communicate can vary depending on the context. We also learned that there are many different forms of communication this includes writing, talking, and signing/ gestures. In learning both of these communications it became clear that communication is more than just speaking and that we use language to express many different emotions. Things such as opinions, beliefs, wishes, threats, commands, promises, and many others are also expressed through language and can change meaning if context is changed. This will later be helpful with my education and future career. (Original)

Although I know how to write different sentences’ I am not good at adding modifiers. This may be because during the process of learning the different types of modifiers, I struggled to understand the structure the modifiers needed to be in.
Punctuation I am able to use correct punctuation in my writing. I am able to correctly situate an apostrophe correctly throughout my writing. This is because I have throughout my education learned how to use this punctuation correctly. Additionally, I know where colons and semi-colons are needed when writing an essay or assignment. This is also because I have learned how to correctly use this form of punctuation. Although I have learned how to use colons and apostrophes I am often confused of where dashes are suppose to be put. Upon reading the text book I learned where dashes are used and why.
Spelling I am an average speller. I am able to spell a range of words without help of others or spell checker, this is because throughout my education I have learned how to spell. Though I have the knowledge to spell a range of words I often still need the help of spell check and from others to spell words. This often happens when I have not heard of the word before or seen a word

In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.

Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.

Have you ever wondered who taught you to talk the way you do? People learn to talk and express themselves everyday of their lives. Starting from the day you were born you used language or some form of it to communicate with those around you. As a baby you usually show your displeasure with your new surroundings by crying, and if you don’t the doctor will make sure you do. Everyday we express our point of view to others in some form of language. Whether it is through verbal communication, written discourse or through body language, you can tell if a person is upset, angry, or happy. We as human beings don’t realize how much language has to do with our lives. How can you determine if one of your friends is angry with you? Is there a different tone to their voice? Do they have a stern look on their face? Of course they do, your friend feels the need to express their anger to you by these different forms of language. Where do we learn to use these different forms of language? How are our uses of these languages shaped? The three main contributing factors to how we express ourselves through language come from our schooling, our friends, and most of all from our families.

I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate.
