What I Learned As A Writer

Writing is more than just something that is required of you in school. It is something that you learn about and develop in the midst of a journey to figure out what type of author you are. When a student starts writing in school, there isn't really any room for imagination or creativity; it is all about structure and discipline. As a student rises through the grades they are provided the opportunity to let their thoughts roam and write about them in a way that they haven't been able to before. When you get to college students are essentially given free range of thoughts and emotions and the professors want to see what they are capable of while still maintaining grammatical discipline. At that point when students are given that “free range” mentality, that's when they really start to learn what type of author and academic scholar they will come to to be. There are two things that I have learned that stand out the most in my mind when I think about the most important things that I have learned about in writing and language so far, that is: your writing has to be effective enough and clear enough to be understood when you are not there to interpret it, and your structural discipline really demonstrates how much you …show more content…

It has allowed me to understand that having clear and well developed thoughts is important. When I write I tend to write in fragments, which can lead to misunderstandings and a confused reader. It also shows that lack of grammatical discipline that I have, but have every intention of improving. That it is better for me, personally, to write down all my ideas at once and then come back then to write in little bits. It has affected the way I read only slightly, but still in a significant way. It has given me the ability to analyze more effectively what the author means in the selection that I may be reading. (insert example
