Identifying my strengths has never came easy to me. I can quickly state my flaws, but speaking about what I can contribute has always been a challenge. Taking the strengths assessment was an eye opener because by results described me perfectly. Discovering my strengths will help me in my future practice as a student affairs professional and my current position as the Student Development Specialist of a college preparatory program for high school students. My number one strength was Relator. Being a relator makes me comfortable with those I am close to, but also open to meeting new people. same mistakes I made. I currently work with first generation and low income high school students by helping them get prepared for institutions of post-secondary education. I am always sharing my college experiences with my students so they can gain a realistic idea of college life. Eventually I would like to transition into higher education, working with first generation students. I was a first generation college student and I did not know of any of authority figures who had come from a similar background as I. I feel that I can help first generation and low income students because I can relate to the struggles that they face in their everyday life. Responsibility was high on my strengths finder.
I have always seen myself as a responsible person. I learned responsibility at an early age from being a caregiver to my mother and grandmother. Coming from a family that is so close made me cautious of letting the ones in love down. This cautiousness carried over into my professional life. Others come to me because they know that I am dependable. I want students to be able to speak to me, because I can’t effectively help them if they do not trust me to do what I say I am going to do. succeed. Restorative was my third strength. I have a passion for people and I see the best in everyone. The underrepresented college students would be my desired target population. These students are those who need extra support and are easily given up on. I gain satisfaction from helping students who fill there is no hope, turn around their situations and gain success. This strength can be helping to students because I do no give up easy and I push students to reach their greatest potential. My family and faith have always been a major part of who I am and of my success thus far.
Because of the values that I gained as a child I am passionate about what I do. I was always asked why I chose to major in social work when they have the hardest job with low pay. I would say I would rather go to work enjoying what I do than making money dreading every day of my life. Individuals trust me because they know where my morals and beliefs stand when they meet me. Although I am routed in what I believe in I do not force my values and beliefs upon others which is important when working with populations with different background than my
own. Each year I attend the graduations of my students who are leaving high school. I feel like a proud parent seeing a student complete their education after watching them, struggle to earn it. Having the developer strength allows me think about what is best for the student without bias. I genuinely want what is best for my students. The main reason I decided to major in social work in undergrad and student personnel services in graduate school is that I have a passion for helping others. Working in education allows me to see a student’s progress and success every day. That provides me with confirmation that I am where I am supposed to be and doing what I am supposed to be doing.
Identifying and understanding your own personal strengths is key to being a successful leader. Knowing your strengths means you can focus your efforts to maximize results, in yourself and in others. Strengths Finder 2.0 is designed to uncover your strengths and utilize these strengths to your advantage (Rath, 2007). Identifying and applying these strengths to your leadership style, will enhance your effectiveness as a transformational leader.
I was excited to take the Gallup Strengths Finder assessment. Although I am more reserved and shy, I typically find myself placed in leadership positions. I am always surprised when people refer to me as a leader but family members and close friends have made me more aware of this personality characteristic. I really enjoyed taking the Gallup Strength Finder assessment and I can see why this would be an assessment growing in popularity across the globe. When I finished the assessment, my results showed that my strengths, from first to last, are developer, empathy, input, connectedness, and restorative.
These strengths and weaknesses were mainly discovered through the papers that we have written. I have many strengths when I’m writing papers and at the same time, I have many weaknesses. In my papers, I have noticed that one of my biggest strengths is how articulate I am. The papers that have been written by myself show that I structured sentences to present ideas in different ways. It is not straightforward and boring when ideas are presented. I like to keep the reader hooked on my paper. In order to keep up with this strength, I like to read articles. The articles I read are typically the ones that present new ideas or start arguments. This is one of my strengths that I am very proud
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. As Roth states in Strengths Finder 2.0, we as a present day world tend to focus on and try to overcome our weaknesses rather that building up our strengths. Using our natural talents can help us do the best we can and help us be a better asset. After taking the strengths assessment, I found that my top five strengths themes ended up being: relator, discipline, competition, responsibility, and significance.
When taking the two different personality tests, I received the same result for both. I am considered to have an ISFJ (Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging) personality type. These personality tests I believe help believe get more in depth with the type of person they are but also help them to see there are other people in the world that are like them. A few known people that are similar to my personality type are mother Teresa, and Barbra Bush. Along with learning about others like me, I was able to realize more into my strengths and weaknesses.
My five strengths according to the strength finder include; balance, this helps me be aware of treating all people equally regardless of the situation. I am neither in anyone 's favor or against anyone as this to me is selfishness and individualism. This would result in a situation where some people scale heights due to connections while others are lagging behind. I believe that a consistent environment where the rules apply to everyone is the best for individuals to function best (Rath, 2007). Flexibility is my next strength. By knowing that things do not always work out as planned has helped me change the tactics of how I perform my tasks. For personal and professional growth, given my personality traits, I need to embrace my strengths and weaknesses. I must use my strengths to my advantage, to be more effective academically and in the workplace, but I also need to identify and try to overcome my weaknesses, especially professionally.
Another strength that I have is being an active listener. I listened to my clients and utilized a lot of micro skills. Insuring confidentiality was also a strength that I developed closer to the end of field placement. Through the self-assessment instruments utilized in this program, I have gained wealth of knowledge about my strengths, and weaknesses and how they affect my personal and professional life. By using different exercises, I recognized new strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, I identified ways to develop my strengths and overcome my weaknesses. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) identified some of my strengths as the ability to get things done, initiating, and taking risks (Kolb, 2007).
