Most challenging Experience The most challenging experience I have encountered while at my practicum site, USU Cache County Extensions, is not being able to speak Spanish. The extensions office teaches many programs in Spanish including; Latino Finance, Latino IDA, and Food Sense Latino Mommy and Me. During these classes many individuals can speak English but there is a good handful that only speak Spanish. I feel that I am not able to communicate with these individuals and am unable to answer their questions and help them further understand the concepts that we are teaching. My client’s probable didn’t view it as much of an issue since there is many who work with me that speak Spanish, so they would just
I was able to have a great learning experience as I stood in front of 45 individuals and teach them finances. This is something that I feel I would like to pursue as my career and I found that this experience was meaningful in the way that I enjoyed teaching and helping others learn concepts that can help and change their lives. I feel that I learned from this experience how to be confident, professional and that I love doing this type of work.
Evaluation of Practicum Experience Out of my 4 objects I listed in class I was able to complete all 4 of them. Therefore, those an objectives I feel I have not achieved as much as it is an ongoing process that I am constantly working on to reach
Upon initial intake, Mr. Carols mentioned that he struggles with the English language. Mr. Carols stated that the English language “makes living in the U.S difficult”. The first cultural dilemma in this situation is the language barrier. In many cultures, communication is very important. Every culture has a unique style of verbal and non-verbal communication. For example, in Arabic culture it is extremely rude to say the word “what” to anyone older than you. Whereas, in American culture this is practiced regularly. The communication barrier between the client and the Social Worker may cause the client to feel uncomfortable at times and possibly even insulted. According to Valuing Differences and Diversity (1977), “if Hispanic individuals with whom you talk do not speak your language proficiently, encourage and praise them for their effort to learn your language”. (Wittmer, p. 137). It is recommended not to ask the clients whether they would like to strengthen their English, but rather to recognize their struggle and to commend them for the efforts. Furthermore, the dynamic of learning the English language has changed completely over the past few years. According to an article by
Another struggle for identity with Latinos is their struggle with the Spanish and English languages. While some Latinos may speak Spanish in their homes, the language may not be conversationally used in their schools. Some Lat...
As a child, I had to navigate from an English-speaking classroom to a Spanish-speaking home. At eight in the morning I was given instruction in English by my professors at school. After three in the afternoon at home, I engaged in Spanish conversation with my mother, father, and siblings. When the summer vacation came around, it was back to speaking Spanish only, and then I regained the Mexican accent that had faded away during the school year. My experience learning English was different from what earlier Spanish-speaking generations in the United States dealt with.
Working this job for nearly two years, it made me significantly more responsible and taught me many things about being patient. Having to deal with many different things at once, I learned how to balance things and take duties one step at a time and not get overwhelmed. This job was like taking a two year class on how to be responsible and be patient when difficulties are stacking up against you.
Walking around I can observe that student’s population is Hispanic who are ESL. This student’s first language is Spanish and has little bit knowledge of English. They are able to take conversation with their peer with the Basic English they know, but struggle to talk in complete sentences. For example the
On Thursday October 8, 2015 I engaged in a one day observation at a Junior High School, while during the week beginning October 26, I engaged in a peer teaching/observation at a Secondary institution. During the one day experience, I functioned as an observer. On the other hand, my role was that of a teacher during the one week practicum experience. The rationale of this essay is to compare both experiences using the following variables: classroom management, lesson clarity and learning climate. The class for the one day practicum experience consisted of both gender. The class size was 29, with seventeen girls and 11 boys. On the other hand, the one week practicum experience had a class size of thirty with males only. The organizational layout
While in the classroom I learn Spanish, speaking with native speakers will be an amazing experience. Not only will I practice my dialogue, but I will also be able to better copy the accent which really sets native speakers apart from those of us who learned Spanish as a second
In conclusion I feel that I have gained knowledge that can only be obtained through hands on experience in the classroom. With this experience I changed my assumption about classroom management techniques and have a totally new outlook which will only aid me as a teacher. This will be of great help to me going forward but I feel as a teacher you must be constantly open to learning and improving
Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. A world-class engineering student woul...

Life is so unpredictable at one moment someone can be in no distress and before you know it, they are no longer in this world. In my experience while doing my practicum at the Jackson Main SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) I have encountered an event that I can’t forget. I had this patient that I had previously taken care of before watched her condition fluctuate over the weeks because she was a long term patient. A little background of the patient include that she was a pre liver transplant that had NASH with contact precaution for a handful of things The patient is not really doing well and the organ systems are beginning to slowly shut down. The patient has a tracheotomy and is on a ventilator. Her past medical history included DM, hyperlipidemia, and Asthma. The patients’ health
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. I hope that I touched each student in a special way, because the students that I got the opportunity to help learn touched my
When this semester came about, I did not know what to expect, I was nervous but also excited at the same time. My desire to teach evolved probably when I was in middle school and the desire matured through high school and is still evolving as I immerse myself into the field of teaching. I started to enjoy learning more and more and felt that to be able to teach all this information I learned would be my dream job. I love to learn and want to inspire my students to love to learn new ideas and skills. I career-shadowed in middle school, and I enjoyed being at the center of the classroom with all the pupils attention directed towards me. Valuing what I had to tell them was awe-inspiring. These children saw me as a role-model and wanted to know
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
