Grand Turk is an island located 550 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Before the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1942, it was home to two different tribes of Indians: the Tainos and Lucayans. The island of Grand Turk is now a member of the British overseas territory the Turks and Caicos Islands. Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Because it is not a part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory, a passport is required to enter Grand Turk and return to the U.S. I hope to experience the unique culture of Grand Turk. While the island is a British territory, the inhabitants still embrace their Indian heritage. I will learn much from the music, people, and art of Grand Turk. La Romana is a city and port located in the southeastern Dominican Republic. The city was founded in 1897 as an oil town, but the population began to grow rapidly in 1911 when a large sugar mill was established. As a result of this growth, La Romana is one of the three largest cities in the Dominican Republic. Because the population is so large, there are a variety of languages spoken in La Romana. In addition to Spanish, which is spoken widely across the Dominican Republic, Haitian Creole and Samaná English are also spoken is La Romana. …show more content…
I hope I have the opportunity to practice my Spanish with native speakers in La Romana.
While in the classroom I learn Spanish, speaking with native speakers will be an amazing experience. Not only will I practice my dialogue, but I will also be able to better copy the accent which really sets native speakers apart from those of us who learned Spanish as a second
language. Aruba is one of the ABC islands discovered by Alonso de Ojeda is the 1499. Before the island was claimed for Spain in the 1500s it was home to the Arawak Indians. Many believe Aruba gained its name from the Spanish phrase “oro huba” which means there is gold; however, no gold was found in Aruba. Aruba is now home to American Indians, Caucasians, and African Americans. The inhabitants of the island speak Papiamento, a Afro-Portuguese dialect spoken in the ABC islands. In Aruba I hope to learn more of the history of the island. In the past one thousand years, Aruba has gone through many cultural and nationality changes. As the inhabitants of the island changed, the island gained more diversity. I believe that while in Aruba picking apart the layers of the island’s history will be a very unique experience, one unparallel to anything I might learn in school.
I came from Mexico when I was 4 years, and like many of us I did not know English. Little by little I became fluent until I now can dominate English. Many people come to this country for a better life, but once in this country, we notice how essential English is for our everyday life. Being bilingual can be very beneficial for anyone in this country. I may be fluent in English, but I still prefer speaking in the Spanish language. This may be because at home that is all we speak. Both my parents do not really know English much. It’s better for me to talk to them in Spanish. I can try to talk to them in English but there may be a few words they won’t
...ependence were Francisco del Rosario Sanchez and Ramon Matias Mella who along with Duarte, are known as the forefathers of the Dominican Republic. La Trinitaria’s manifesto in favor of independence was released on January 16, 1844, thus the fight for independence began. Due to the work of La Trinitaria, many battles and much carnage, the Dominican Republic was born on February 27, 1844, claiming independence from Haiti with a declaration at the Puerta del Conde. Small battles with the Haitian army continued across the island. As continued proof of the Hispanic ideology held by Dominicans, Pedro Santana, first president of the Dominican Republic, pledged allegiance to the Spanish crown, and in 1861annexed the Dominican Republic to Spain
Thanksgiving, traditionally, is a time of gathering families together to express our gratitude for one another over a large roasted turkey. According to the Huffington Post, one fifth of the total 235 million turkeys eaten in the United States are consumed on Thanksgiving Day (1). There are a number of different theories on how the turkey got its name. Some people say that Columbus thought that the land he discovered was connected to India which was known for having large flocks of peacocks. When he saw these strange large birds he thought they were related to the peacock family so he named them Tuka, which means peacock in the language of India (2). Others say that the name came from Native American’s calling them Firkee, which was later adapted to Turkey (2). Another theory is that the birds did not come directly from the New World to England. Instead, they came via merchant ships from the eastern Mediterranean Sea which were called ‘Turkey Merchants’ because a lot of the area was a part of the Turkish Empire at the time. Purchasers of the birds back home in England thought the fowl came from the area so they called them ‘turkey birds’ and soon after just ‘turkeys’ (2).
Long before the coming of the so-called "civilized" Europeans, North America was inhabited by traveling bands of ancient people. Nomadic tribes, these early ancestors of Southwest Native Americans traveled the land in search of food from the thriving herds of large animals. But possibly as early as A.D. 900, as the wandering herds began to diminish, these people began to settle down and developed societies and cultures around what is called the Four Corners area of the southwest, in southern Utah and Colorado, and northern Arizona and New Mexico.
Jamaica is a small island but it is very beautiful. Jamaica is located approximately 480 miles south of Florida Coast, the caribbean island. Jamaica is slightly smaller
On 4th century AD, Armenia became the first nation in the world to make Christianity as their official religion. Because of that Armenia known as an independent entity. During 15 centuries, Armenia was under Ottoman Empire control. Ottoman Empire was the leader of two different religion groups, Muslims and Christianity. Ottoman Empire treated the Armenians differently. They had to pay higher taxes than the Muslim people. They had very little political and legal rights. Beside their obstacles, they still lived wealthier than the Muslims. For instance, they tended to be better educated than the Turkish people. Because of this, Turkish neighbors tended to resent their success. They also lived peacefully because of their less population. In 1914, Turks entered the World War I by being the side of Germany and also Austria-Hungary Empire. At the same time Armenian was helping Russia to fight with the Turks. Because of this war, Turks tried to remove Armenians from Ottoman Empire.
How do you characterize a country, the people who occupy the land, their livelihood and who they are as a group? Culture is the answer that can illustrate a country with millions of people. Growing up in a Hispanic household the first language that you learn should be Spanish, right? This was not the case for me, having two older sisters that were already in school learning English and always using English around me and my family. English was my first language, this helped with my early youth in picking up English at school faster. Learning English first was detrimental to learning Spanish, I learned informal Spanish called Spanglish. I would mix up English words with Spanish words and made it harder for me to construct vocal sentences. Being a Hispanic is difficult if you know limited Spanish, it was important for me to dedicate time to learn Spanish.
. Armenians are patriarchal in nature, and typically have the man of the household serve as the breadwinner. Mothers are usually seen as caring and nurturing, while fathers are typically viewed more as authoritative and disciplinarian (Bakalian, 1993). While men are seen as the breadwinners and are usually the sole decision makers, women are traditionally expected to be wives and mothers, and are responsible for maintaining and transmitting family traditions (Minnassian, 2010). Armenians are generally considered a collectivistic culture, with strong family values at their cornerstone. Due to a longstanding history of oppression, as a collective, Armenians tend to be weary of others and are usually suspicious when seeking services. As an extension
I met this "different person" at the periodical section of the Good Library of State College. After asking the person for my article that I had requested I ask his name, he answers with his Indian accent, "Ajai Ahulalia." I say, "What?s that?" "Ajai Sanhi," he responds back. "What?" I say, being embarrassed because I cannot understand his name. "Ajai Ahulalia" he tries for the third time. "Oh Ajai," finally I understand. I ask, "Were do you live?" "Yoder First" he answers, then I fell a fool again, "Really, me too." What has happened to Ajai?s life when he lived in India and now here in the U.S.?
Throughout history, the middle east has often been the focus of news reporters. A middle eastern country that has not been exempt from this, is Turkey. Turkey has not only been a focus, but it also has had a very long, complicated history.
Thus, resulting in furthering my eligibility to be considered for these programs. Learning how to speak another Spanish has been a goal of mine after I came back from my service – learning trip in Mexico. I was only there for a week and picked up on the language quickly, but I wanted more. Spanglish only took the conversation so far and since I am someone who loves connecting with others I was frustrated that I could only communicate on a limited
Istanbul is both an ancient and modern city that is full of culture dating back to the beginning of time. It’s a city that is unique, in that, it connects both Europe and Asia. Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and the most crowded one too. There are approximately more than fourteen million people living in Istanbul alone. That is more than its capital city of Ankara. Istanbul is not just a metropolitan, or one of the most crowded cities, and it’s also an ancient and historical city.
For many, speaking another language keeps them connected to their families. As the popular saying goes, “you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been”. Interactions with people of different cultures go deeper. When you speak someone’s native language, you can talk about a lot more than the weather and other daily fillers. Building deep and meaningful relationships with foreign communities usually involves speaking and understanding, partially at least, the same
A lot of cultures in history and today believe that there is a spirit world linked with the living world and when one dies, the spirit of that individual will enter the spirit world. Some cultures have created objects for spirits to inhabit and treat them with great care so there is balance within both the spirit world and the living: the cycle of bringing tribute to these items gives while the spirits will return the favor. Without these objects, the death of person will not truly be honored in the group or even neglecting spirits will cause problems within the group as well.
