Discipline is a way of behaving which shows the willingness to obey rules or a code of behavior. It is also a way of knowing the right from the wrong, the acceptable from the unacceptable. Teaching children discipline should help them engage with others and behave better in situations. It should also help them control and modify their behavior depending on the situation and the environment. It should help them to maintain positive behavioral equilibrium under persuasion and inducement, chaos and confusion.
According to the Committee for Children (2004), the purpose of discipline is “to encourage moral, physical, and intellectual development and a sense of responsibility in children." (American Humane Association). Discipline cannot be forced from children. It should be inculcated in children in such a way that it becomes internalized and a way of life for them. Discipline is an ability or skill that preserves good behavior even in a situation of chaos and confusion. It is not possible to use just a single technique when trying to teach children discipline. The Eclectic approach uses different strategies, theories and guidance principles to help children be disciplined. (American Humane Association)
We should consider the ages and stages of the children and the cultural, social and socio economic background of the children before deciding on the discipline strategies. Since positive guidance is the requirement, it is better to observe the child keenly before strategizing on what guidance principle to apply to help the child. Also, all children are unique. Hence what works with one child may not work with another.

Raising a child is a challenging life task that is given over to individuals all over the world without an instruction manual. There is a difference between abuse and discipline and when this line is crossed, children cannot benefit from positively reinforced behavior. Neglect and abuse are not functions of discipline, and should never be used to punish your child. The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong not to make them live in fear of making mistakes. Parents need to understand the fine line between abuse and discipline. Discipline should be positive reinforcement, it should be consistent, and it should be a learning opportunity for the child. Child abuse and neglect will affect the parent-child relationship, it will brutalize the parents, and can affect the child's life forever. Positive Discipline is a concept that can be extremely misinterpreted and when it is misused it can cause more harm than good. A common form of discipline for children is punishment and it is widely used because it is the believed to be very effective. “However, discipline comes from the Latin word discipulus or disciplini, which means a follower of truth, principle, or a venerated leader” (Nelson, pg. 15). Punishment in itself is not a positive method nor is it a positive form of leadership to follow or exert. Discipline is intended to cease misbehavior in the classroom. Effective classroom management procedures contribute to an environment that enhance learning and reduce discipline problems (Edwards, 2004). The goal of discipline is to help students learn to control their own behavior. Effective teachers apply various disciplinary techniques that help in curtailing misbehavior and promote self-discipline in students (Charles, 1996). Effective discipline is emotionally disconnected from student actions (Henley, Ramsey and Algozzine, 1999). According to Dreikurs, discipline is a process in which students learn to impose reasonable limits on themselves (Charles, 1996).
I would not be considered your typical college student in search of an education degree. I am a 31 year old male, married, with two children, and working on my second career. My previous life consisted of working in the coal mines till I was injured. My injury, however, is considered a blessing in disguise. My injury has leaded me to the world of education.
Classroom management describes the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly. It is the groundwork for the classroom. When constructed well there is room for growth and progress, as well as penalties for non-compliance. Without good classroom management, learning is inefficient and the teacher becomes stressed. A stressed teacher leads to unruly students, which is where discipline comes into play. Discipline is “the enforcement of order – that is, ensuring instructions are carried out – is often regulated through punishment.” (Discipline, 2011) Teaching children to behave appropriately in different circumstances is discipline, this is done with punishment, or loss of privileges. Discipline is necessary in order to have a harmonious classroom.
Discipline plays a key part in education. Respect from your students will make the classroom a better atmosphere. Rules should be established on the first day. Rules should be a thoughtful process so they can be carried out to be affective, but logical consequences. We do not want the students self esteem to be damaged.
