Raising a child is a challenging life task that is given over to individuals all over the world without an instruction manual. People must learn by experience how to nurture, care for, and provide for miniature versions of themselves for almost two decades in most cultures! Discipline plays a major role in raising a child because most parents truly want what is best for their children and want them to grow up to be responsible, respectable, and successful adults; however, in some unfortunate cases, parents misinterpret the term discipline and in turn end up abusing their children. The question becomes, is there truly a difference between discipline and abuse? And if so, what is it? With education, individuals can learn how to properly distinguish between discipline and abuse and realize that there is a clear black and white difference between the two. The origin of the word discipline stems from the Latin word disciplina, which means “instruction [or] knowledge” (“Definition of discipline”, n.d.). As stated in the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the word discipline is “the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, [or] using punishment to correct disobedience” (“Definition of discipline”, n.d.). According to WebMD, a website that is visited and seen by millions of people in the United States every day, discipline is “the process of teaching your child what type of behavior is acceptable and what type is not acceptable. In other words, discipline teaches a child to follow rules” (“Child Discipline Methods”, n.d.). Consisting of using physical discipline as a method of protection and discipline. Many parents with children of color often go to great lengths to make sure that their child is well disciplined. Discipline, is the practice of training one to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. The method of discipline many in colored societies opt for is physical discipline. However, there are some who argue against it and opt for non-physical discipline.
Nadine Block argues that spanking children is not a form of love or compassion, but rather an act of violence and disciplinary spanking should be an outlawed practice. Disciplinary spanking is a different thing than a depressed or angry parent spanking a child to relieve their mood. Spanking a child in order to remove the idea of performing an action known to the child to be unacceptable is something that every parent should do, and is not an act of abuse or violence. When used correctly, spanking children is a highly effective and loving response to unruly behavior, because the child learns how to behave and become an upstanding citizen (Dodson). If a child is not disciplined for improper actions, the child is more likely to develop behavior problems and illnesses such as ADHD, while a child who is properly disciplined is more likely to grow into a better-behaved individual (Shute).
Discipline can be a very controversial topic that can raise many questions. According to Margaret Mead and Rhoda Metraux in “Discipline—To What End?” “In a society in which many people are socially mobile and may live as adults in a social or cultural environment very different from the one in which they grew up, old forms of discipline may be wholly unsuited to new situations.” What they mean is that the discipline parents used on their children may not be the same discipline that those children should use on their own kids. In many situations, I agree that the discipline used today by parents is different from how they were disciplined in certain situations. But on the other hand, I also believe that some techniques are very similar, if not the same.
This is because the term discipline derives from the root word disciple which means to teach. Parents have an ongoing opportunity and responsibility to teach our children how to love well and live life as effectively and healthfully as possible. What we want children to understand is that the gentle sting of a spanking is connected to the greater and often long-term pain of harmful choices. Simply put, prevention is easier than cure. Parenting is a hard job.
All parents are deficient from time to time and no parent can be emotionally available all the time to their children. It is perfectly normal for parents to yell at their children once in a while. Some parents may be controlling while some resort to physical discipline, but as long as the child receives plenty of love and understands why the discipline took place (Forward,1989). The question that lies ahead is: Does all of these options portray the parent as “cruel or unfit” to raise a child? Of course not. The saying “Spare the rod, spoil the child” stands true. Without discipline or order in the household, the child feels that there is no boundaries and can react in any form that he or she wants to without fearing the consequences. But, there is a distinct line between “discipline” and “abuse” which will be explained in the next chapter.
Discipline is known for training one to obey the rules of behavior by using punishment or correct disobedience. There are many forms of discipline to talk about, and usually someone would say spanking is the best way to discipline a child. On the contrary, spanking is not a form of discipline, but more of an abuse. Parents have to realize that they will need to discipline their children for many years furthermore, spanking should not be part of the discipline. Spanking can be the reason for many things such as, children’s harmful mental health, abusive relationship with their parents or guardian and also the reason they have bad long term effects.
This paper focuses on the views of corporal punishment as it relates to the discipline of children and why the topic is so controversial. The paper will state various definitions of corporal punishment as well as a brief history of punishing children with physical force. The paper will also state the alternatives and disadvantages as a discipline tool for children why corporal punishment may not be the best method of punishment for children. The paper highlights research and experiments performed with regard to punishing children as well as states statistics of physical abuse and lists some alternatives of corporal punishment that are just as effective.

The word discipline is defined as imparting knowledge and skill, to teach. Discipline is used by parents to teach their children the correct way to behave. They need to be given constant discipline to be taught right and wrong and it can involve rewards and punishments to teach self control and increase desirable behaviors and decrease undesirable behaviour. “Child discipline is one of the most important elements of successful parenting” (AllAboutParenting.org, 2002, para. 1), however, there are many different approaches and forms of punishment used by parents today. Some of the most common forms are ‘time-outs’, restriction from play or going to a friend’s house, standing in a corner and physical discipline (spanking). While not every parent will utilize any or all of these methods, there are many options to consider when looking for the most suitable or effective way to discipline a child.
