The meaning of being a good parent is different for everyone. To me, being a good parent is a combination of communication, discipline, and environment. Every family and culture is different when it comes to how they parent their child and there is no right or wrong way. In this paper, I will discuss how communication, discipline and environment are important factors of being a good parent.
Communication
One thing that I believe is an important concept of being a good parent is effective communication. I believe that this is characteristic makes for good parenting because the use of communication skills can increase our effectiveness when we interact with children and adults. As parents, we need to listen to our children, and it is important to give the child your full attention. Parents should avoid things such as, interrupting, ignoring, and lecturing as these things stall what is needed for this effective communication for not

The word discipline, to me, does not necessarily mean punishment. Parents can use discipline as more of a teaching moment for their child. I believe that this characteristic makes for good parenting and I feel as though every parent should do it because discipline provides the foundation for children’s self-control. It is important that we consistently express what we approve or disapprove when it comes to a child’s behavior as the child will start to internalize those standards and begin to act on them. I also believe that discipline is a key part in being a good parent because it teaches children important life skills. By disciplining children, we are showing children that we care about them because discipline focuses a lot on keeping child safe and healthy. As a parent, we should want the best for our children, and even though children do not always like the idea of being disciplined, it is a good part of parenting as it suggests a concern for the child’s
What is good parenting? Many think good parenting consists of keeping a close eye on their child but this in many ways can be detrimental to the child. Personally, my mother was not present for most of my childhood. However, it in no way hindered my growth as a child, instead it brought me up and made me very independent at a young age. Similar to reality, literature depicts the complexity of the relationships between a mother and daughter as well. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, Maya’s mother abandons her as a young child and is an inconsistent presence in her life. In Emergence: Labeled Autistic by Temple Grandin, Temple’s mother is constantly devoted to her and gives her the best opportunities possible. While both Maya
Raising a child is a challenging life task that is given over to individuals all over the world without an instruction manual. People must learn by experience how to nurture, care for, and provide for miniature versions of themselves for almost two decades in most cultures! Discipline plays a major role in raising a child because most parents truly want what is best for their children and want them to grow up to be responsible, respectable, and successful adults; however, in some unfortunate cases, parents misinterpret the term discipline and in turn end up abusing their children. The question becomes, is there truly a difference between discipline and abuse? And if so, what is it? With education, individuals can learn how to properly distinguish between discipline and abuse and realize that there is a clear black and white difference between the two. The origin of the word discipline stems from the Latin word disciplina, which means “instruction [or] knowledge” (“Definition of discipline”, n.d.). As stated in the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the word discipline is “the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, [or] using punishment to correct disobedience” (“Definition of discipline”, n.d.). According to WebMD, a website that is visited and seen by millions of people in the United States every day, discipline is “the process of teaching your child what type of behavior is acceptable and what type is not acceptable. In other words, discipline teaches a child to follow rules” (“Child Discipline Methods”, n.d.). It even goes on to state that “it sounds so straightforward, yet every parent becomes frustrated at one time or another with issues surrounding children and discipline” (“Child Discipline Metho...
Healthy families foster environments of safety and relationships that are grounded on trust. One major factor in healthy family systems is positive parenting. Both Brooks (2014) and Feldman (2014) advocated the authoritative parenting as being the most beneficial for growing children. Generally within this style of parenting, Brooks noted that these types of parents provide emotional security and build up self-esteem in their children. Clear Rules are given, but they can be somewhat flexible and can come with explanations if the children would want to discuss the reasoning behind the rule (Brooks, 2013). Feldman explained that the environment that these parents create by parenting in this manner exudes warmth and support. Another factor in healthy family systems is that they lay the foundations for positive growth. Because open communication with the children is a common practice in this family life, the children are able to strengthen their communication and social skills (Brooks, 2013). Feldman supported that fact and added that with an environment that provides a strong sense of security, children are better able to make and maintain lasting relationships. With the safe, emotionally se...
Webster’s dictionary defines parenting as the process of raising and education a child from birth until adulthood. Everyone has or had a caregiver, whether it be pests, animals or human beings. However, the thing that differs is the method of parenting. There are many methods of parenting, but there are only three main parts. They include authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style, and democratic parenting style. The next few paragraphs will give the reader a detailed description of these three parenting methods and what my parents have used in parenting me.
Effective communication is important when working with children and young people. Effective communication is good as it helps make relationships between the child and adult, this will further the children’s communication skills and they will then be able to make friends. Communication is also important as it’s how we express and share our feelings, needs and ideas, that’s why it’s important for adults to make good relationships with the children. Children should feel comfortable and relaxed when communicating as this makes them more likely to enjoy communication and be able to discuss any problems to the adults.
There is a difference between abuse and discipline and when this line is crossed, children cannot benefit from positively reinforced behavior. Neglect and abuse are not functions of discipline, and should never be used to punish your child. The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong not to make them live in fear of making mistakes. Parents need to understand the fine line between abuse and discipline. Discipline should be positive reinforcement, it should be consistent, and it should be a learning opportunity for the child. Child abuse and neglect will affect the parent-child relationship, it will brutalize the parents, and can affect the child's life forever. It is important to positively reinforce good behavior and discipline to benefit both the children and the parents.
When, it comes to raising a child, a parent doesn’t really have guidelines. They want their kid to be successful, intelligent, with what they need in life to be a good adult. But what do they need? I think three good things that a parent needs to teach their kids are good morals, respect, and independence. If these three things are integrated into a childhood, then I think that that child will be able to become a good human being.
No one teaches us how to be parents. As parents raise their children they hope to raise them to be good members of society. A child’s upbringing is reflected as they interact with other children and other people. When they come to act inappropriately or in a way society doesn’t see as normal, the person to blame is the parent. As a parent, today and always, they need to raise their child to meet the societal norms and at the same teach them to be good citizens. The parenting a person receives will be reflected when they form their own family. The belief is then formed to be to raise a better family than the one raised in. The different parenting styles and the factors have to be taken into consideration such as time, the environment, and the social and psychological aspects as well. The belief is to be a loving and tolerating parent but there is no perfect way to parent because each child has their own needs.
Discipline can be a very controversial topic that can raise many questions. According to Margaret Mead and Rhoda Metraux in “Discipline—To What End?” “In a society in which many people are socially mobile and may live as adults in a social or cultural environment very different from the one in which they grew up, old forms of discipline may be wholly unsuited to new situations.” What they mean is that the discipline parents used on their children may not be the same discipline that those children should use on their own kids. In many situations, I agree that the discipline used today by parents is different from how they were disciplined in certain situations. But on the other hand, I also believe that some techniques are very similar, if not the same.
In today’s era, there are so many things that can interfere with how a parent is able to discipline their child. Discipline is a very thin line that can be surpassed without even knowing the harm that was done. There are many different ways a child can be disciplined such as by talking to them, taking away their favorite things, not allowing them free time, time outs, and sometimes even spanking. As children, everyone has experienced some type of discipline depending on the way parents decided to raise their children. Depending on what culture children were raised in can take part on the way parents decided to discipline their children. Parents have different beliefs on how their child should be disciplined. As parents, many are faced with
There are many approaches to parenting and everyone has their own preferences as to what they think is best. In a fast paced rush around society, it is hard to know what the best choices are for your children. There is a struggle to balance what needs to be done with what can be done, and this has negative and positive feedback on the children. Parents play a critical role in shaping and guiding their children into functional confident adults. An effective parent will learn as they teach in order to grow into understanding with their children.
Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.
When discipline is used correctly it can help guide somebody develop socially acceptable patterns of behavior. Discipline also teaches people about their mistakes, how to problem solve, and deal with their emotions in a correct way. Punishment is when the person who gives out the discipline, feels like the one being discipline has given a negative response to the discipline. Punishment c...
There are many different things that I take into consideration when it comes to parenting. Parents have many different responsibilities but there are three in particular that I think are very important. Being a good role model is important, as well as listening to your children and disciplining them appropriately. If you want to be a good parent you have to put your kids first.
In conclusion, it would be necessary to state that strict parenting is not a very bad thing, if the family still has the loving atmosphere and the strictness comes from the particular situations where it is needed. Parents who prefer the ease in dealing with a child who did not attach much importance to his manners and do not insist on absolute obedience and accuracy, also raise sociable and attentive to the surrounding people, if they are not afraid to stand firm in those issues that they consider particularly important.
