My Overarching Goal

My overarching goal is to be a New York City public school principal. I am a hard working, driven and organized person. In addition, I have a love for educating and mentoring both students and teachers alike. This conclusion to become a principal has accumulated overtime and shaped me into the person I am today. When I was 23 years old, my father died. At the time, I was in grief counseling, and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My counselor suggested I pick a goal and start working. With careful consideration, I decided I wanted to be a school principal. I decided this because I love working in schools, and I have the personality and the vision to be an effective leader. I want to create a safe learning environment which pushes my students to success through a caring staff. I grew up in a home of teachers. My mother worked in a special education preschool as an assistant teacher and my father worked as a special education high school teacher and later a testing coordinator. As soon as I could work, I started as an after-school assistant at the pre-school my mother worked at. Then, after I graduated college, I did Americorps with a title one school in Manhattan. Although these were good experiences, I was not certified to teach and I knew if I was going to pursue teaching, I needed to get my degree eventually. When I finally decided my goal of becoming a school principal, I took multiple steps to doing so. The first thing I knew was that I did not want to be the type of principal with limited experience. I believe becoming an administrator is the best way I can do this. I am generally the type of person to take lead and lead others. By receiving my administrators degree, I believe I can learn the skills to best benefit the most amount of students. I also want to influence other teachers. At my current job, I will always offer to take on additional roles and responsibilities so I can help my fellow teachers and therefore help the students. This degree will help me by further giving myself the skills which will allow me to also become a leader in a community. As a product, as both a student and teacher, of New York City Public Schools, I have witnessed the power an administrator has in a community.
