How long have you been playing?
I did not have any introduction to music or the arts until high school, so I started there. I have only taken a month of vocal lessons, due to the tuition being too expensive for me to pay, however, my musical training has been through the musicals that I do at school, where I get it for free. I am currently teaching myself to play piano.
Tell us a bit about your musical goals and ambitions.
I never say what I hope to be, I always say what I will be. I am going to be a Broadway Performer in New York City, where I will be the second Latina woman to receive an Academy, Emmy, Oscar, and Tony Award, following in the footsteps of Ms. Rita Moreno. If I don’t know how to think big, I will never be able to be up there

This means we will not have a stable source of income as a family. My mother has had to take care of her four children by herself since 2013, when my father, my best friend, passed away from drug and alcohol abuse. With my older sister and I pursuing our college degrees and the younger two being in highschool, it’s unimaginably stressful for her to be unsure of the future. She knows the maximum amount that she can pay for my college education, and although that amount isn't much, I’m grateful she can help me at all. Given my family’s financial situation, It is up to me to make up the rest of it. Although this is stressful for me, I push on because I want to show my siblings that they are enough, and that they are allowed to fight for what they want in life. Mr. Anderson had the utmost dedication to his craft, and he loved to make people happy. As a performer, I relate to the deepest degree. Performing is about telling a story, making people feel, and seeing the impact you have made on people afterwards. Everyday, I fight so that I get the chance to go to New York and study at Fordham University. I’m proud to say that I am one of 18 students accepted into my major of Theatre Performance! However, the tuition is just not doable for me and my mother. This scholarship would mean that I get the chance to live out my dreams, and make people happy, like Mr. Anderson did.
I know that through my hard work and dedication I can make my goals a reality. However, it may not be possible without these Scholarships. While my parents will help me in any way they can, I am hoping that my hard work and dedication to my studies pays off. I am a very self-driven individual who will accomplish any goal I set my mind on achieving. I am also aware of how without scholarships I may face a financial setback. I am hoping that through the help of scholarships I will be able to achieve all my goals in a timely
In literature, numbers are used to communicate important messages to the reader. The author uses references to numbers to strengthen the important ideas of the novel. In many cultures numbers carry an important or significant meaning to them. These numbers can carry a meaning more efficiently than using only words. In Beloved, Toni Morrison uses references to numbers to emphasize the significant ideas of the novel. Morrison uses these numbers to represent the persistence of slavery brought upon in Sethe’s life, her children’s life, Paul D.’s life, and Baby Suggs life, after slavery has ended. These references to numbers are important because they show how these characters are affected after it has ended. Through physical means, through the actions of these characters, and through psychological means of these characters, Morrison shows the haunting continuation and aftereffects of slavery.
The Jared E. McEachern Scholarship is vital to my college career due to my decision to attend Anderson University. Anderson University is a private school that costs nearly thirty- six thousand dollars to attend per year. It is imperative that I apply for as many scholarships as possible in hopes of reaching my goal of receiving at least half of my tuition. My parents are very supportive and willing to help in any way they can; however, I genuinely do not want to cause them any stress when it comes to paying for college.
I’ve always loved music and singing, even as a kid. It has always been my passion. Performing on stage is what actually broke me out of my shell. Going into highschool I was very awkward and shy, but music helped me conquer my social awkwardness. Music has helped me give back to my community in ways I never thought of, seeing the smiles on people’s faces when I sing is one of the greatest feelings ever and I cherish it, and the applause when I’m done makes me feel all warm inside. Performing and helping others perform is something I love to do and it helped me find my place in the world. Learning a new song is fantastic experience as well.
My mother received a job offer from the City of Shelby in the finance department right out of college. She accepted and began working. A few years passed and my parents decided to expand their family. My older sister, Chelsey, was born May 5th, 1994. When my sister was one year old, my mother started thinking about going back to school to get her masters. “I knew it would be difficult with your dads schedule and us having your sister, but one night at dinner I brought the idea up to your dad. Of course he was on board because he is supportive of most anything that I decide to do” She said. Off to master’s school she went to Gardner Webb University. By getting this extra piece to her degree, she gained many
Music has always been an important part of my life. Upon entering the fifth grade, my parents bought me a flute, at my insistence. After moderate success playing the flute, I saw greener grass on the other side of the musical fence. Singing just had to be easier than making music with a long metal pipe. My perception and reality did not exactly match. Singing has its own subtleties and complexities which are not readily apparent to the casual observer. Abandoning the flute for singing, I began taking voice lessons in the tenth grade. My voice teacher was very experienced and encouraged me to pursue my interest in music beyond high school. After much deliberation, I decided to major in voice during college. This path would be fraught with unforeseen difficulties and exciting challenges.
Going to college is something that has been drilled into my brain by the public education system since I was in first grade. They obviously did a phenomenal job because here I am, a high school senior, applying to various colleges and universities trying to find the right fit. There are many reasons why I want to go to college, but there is one reason above all others, and that is that I want to be able to share my passion of music with others in hopes of sparking a similar passion inside of them.
I need this scholarship to achieve my goals and most importantly to make my family proud. My family did not get this chance that you are giving me so I am not just doing this for me, I am also doing this for them. I already have all the support from all of my family and all of my friends, but that alone is not enough to conquer my dreams, and to prove all the people that have doubted me that they were wrong. I hope that this organization can help me reach my goals, and to most importantly make them become a reality. I want to look back onto my life and know that this scholarship, and college helped me to be the man I will be. I hope you accept me into your college and most importantly giving me this
My mother's’ biggest fear is that I won’t attend college just like she hadn’t. I look back at my mom's life and think what she could have done to graduate and to further her education. Did she think about her life in the future? No, she only thought about her getting out of Worland High school for good. She always tells me, “Monica don’t give up on school. Look at my life, you don’t want to struggle with money and you most definitely don't want to be a single mother like me, without an education. If I could, I would go back and graduate to make our life better, but it is, was it is. If you don’t want the life I have graduate and further your education. Believe in yourself.” I have looked into so many grants i could in order to attend college and it turns out I could get grants for basically anything. I started looking into grants at the age of fourteen, just in case I didn’t have the money to put me through college, and turns out that was the smartest idea I have ever had. I’m not rich, so I have to think about all possibilities, just so I can to accomplish my dream. If I could give anyone any advice, it would have to be to my siblings and to all the people that are thinking about attending
With all of the downfalls that I have experienced in my academic and personal life, a college education will make it possible for me to continue my journey into becoming a prestigious corporate lawyer. I have the drive for success and I am certain that with this scholarship I will be able to pay off my debt and help my mother with her own educational goals. I was content that I was able to encourage her to attend school and I am most fortunate to be given an opportunity to help both her and myself achieve our ultimate goals for the near future.
My name is Vy Tran. My background in music came from basic music classes I took in middle and high schools. I learned and played piano for about a year when I was a little girl, and I stopped at Method Rose level. I have taken few online classes such as History and Political Science.
Coming from a family with no college education, a college degree has always been a lifetime goal and dream of mine. My mom and dad have worked in furniture factories since their graduation from high school, and I have seen their personal struggles, and it has only pushed me harder to want to attend college. My parents have always worked hard to bless me with all they could, but paying for college is out of their control, therefore I am heavily relying on scholarships. Receiving the Phil Jones Memorial Scholarship would mean everything to me and would be a tremendous help for me while at ICC and UMMC. If I could win this scholarship, it would help me achieve the goal of staying away from student loans and debt.
It was during my second year of high school that I first heard of the Pruitt Memorial Scholarship. I suddenly felt hope for my future. Hope that I would be able to attend college, and hope that I would be given the chance to fight for my very large dreams. My passion is theatre and my goal is that someday I will be able to teach others about my passion and spread the magic of theatre around the world, but to be able to do that requires lots of education. The Pruitt Memorial Scholarship opened the door for me to pursue this dream. Now, I just had to acquire the scholarship, and that meant performing volunteer community-service.
College is a privilege for young adults but is also a very expensive journey. In 2013, my mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. My father had passed away in 2005, so I have lived in a single parent home who played the role of both parents. My mother's multiple sclerosis was deterring her health and was sent to numerous neurologists and hospital visits that become negatively financially impacting. Soon after she began treatment, the hospital she worked for closed the rehabilitation unit where she was employed as a nurse. My mother tried to keep our family financially afloat but couldn't handle the stress of her new jobs, and was eventually unemployed. At this time, I was only 15 so I decided that I would work odd jobs until I was 16
The process of choosing a career is, many times, a difficult decision. Many factors must be taken into account while deciding a career. Such factors usually include pay, work environment, and most importantly, what the person is interested in. Becoming a musician would be a highly fulfilling career for the reasons of broadening one’s musical abilities, people enjoying something that an individual made, and traveling the country, possibly even the world, for musical opportunities such as teaching, performing, and writing.
