JOURNAL # 3 MENTORING 1) What has gone well in my mentoring experience? I have a wonderful experience on the Acute and Chronic Lab at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Students involved me in the care of their assigned patients for the day in order to obtain patient focused care experience and clinical knowledge. Therefore, it was very rewarding that the nursing students relied on me for the answer of multiple question and concerns confronted during the day. 2) What has been the greatest challenge? The greatest challenge during the leadership experience was making sure that the student I was mentoring actually wanted to be mentored. • Monitor the mentee’s progress and provide helpful feedback. 4) What would make the experience better? Successful mentoring relationships among the nursing students are built upon trust, openness to self-disclosure, affirmation, and willingness and skill in giving and receiving feedback. There is not adequate time to build this trusting relationship. Therefore, I encourage the increase of hours in this particular section on the leadership lab course. 5) What have I learned about myself and relationships with other students? I learn that I am a team player and I like working in a team rather than in solitary. However, I required enhancement in my communication skills. 6) What else have I learned and what has promoted me to learn? I learn during this experience that eagerness to help, attitude, curiosity and staying focus are major areas in the process from novice to expert nurse. Therefore, I want to make sure that I have all those qualities to enhance my nursing practice and clinical
