JOURNAL # 3 MENTORING 1) What has gone well in my mentoring experience? I have a wonderful experience on the Acute and Chronic Lab at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Students involved me in the care of their assigned patients for the day in order to obtain patient focused care experience and clinical knowledge. Therefore, it was very rewarding that the nursing students relied on me for the answer of multiple question and concerns confronted during the day. 2) What has been the greatest challenge? The greatest challenge during the leadership experience was making sure that the student I was mentoring actually wanted to be mentored. Successful mentoring relationships among the nursing students are built upon trust, openness to self-disclosure, affirmation, and willingness and skill in giving and receiving feedback. There is not adequate time to build this trusting relationship. Therefore, I encourage the increase of hours in this particular section on the leadership lab course. 5) What have I learned about myself and relationships with other students? I learn that I am a team player and I like working in a team rather than in solitary. However, I required enhancement in my communication skills. 6) What else have I learned and what has promoted me to learn? I learn during this experience that eagerness to help, attitude, curiosity and staying focus are major areas in the process from novice to expert nurse. Through serving in various leadership roles, I reignited my passion for mentoring and fostering lasting relationships. Particularly as a science teaching assistant, I became a leader and counselor by teaching classes, utilizing metaphors to explain complex science, and encouraging others by relating to their struggles. Also, I discovered the importance of truly being in the moment by being receptive to others’ unvoiced problems. Most notably, this position taught me that we can all learn something new from each other as I experienced before with Abby. All these benefits incited me to create a mentorship program on my college campus that pairs accomplished seniors with younger students. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
Every single encounter I had, including those with my peers and facilitators have left me a better nurse and person than when I arrived. It truly has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this experience as it motivates me to seek out new experience and research to facilitate my continued growth both personally and as a nurse partaking in the process of my cleints’ “becomings”. ...g environment can have a direct effect on the mentor – student relationship and on the process of giving feedback. It is essential that the mentor prepares prior to a student arriving on the ward in order to use the learning environment to its full potential. There is also certainly scope for further research to be carried out in relation to mentor / mentee relationships and how this can impact on both learning of the student and the mentor. The same can be said about the process of giving feedback; once again the current literature finds it difficult to agree on a specific formula on how to achieve this. The most important thing that I will take away from my experience is how I can improve for the next time I mentor a student nurse. I will be looking to improve on the way in which I give feedback so that it is done in a way that supports learning and not animosity.
As Finkelman (2006) stated, “Mentoring, and important career development to that can be used by nurses any type of set or specialty, can be used to develop the critical leadership skills needed by nurses. All successful leaders have had mentors are our mentors” (Finkelman,2006, p. 390).
Nursing is a complex degree, so many different subsets and divisions that it is hard for the common person to fathom. Returning to my education and rediscovering all these theories and ideas is very overwhelming. In my work I am already beginning to see myself change for the better. Work is always very stressful even more so now, and I see myself becoming a leader when in the past I would not have been. They are influenced by their family of origin, their education, their work experience, and the people they interact with. For Ms. Eckert this has all brought her to her current career position and approach to leadership. She holds leadership not only as the challenge and difficult task that many people today see it as. She also views it as an amazing opportunity to influence others. Ms. Eckert also noted the importance of coaching others, both in their nursing development, and in their leadership potential. This is particularly important as we are facing rapid change within the nursing field. There should be a certain amount of mentorship to learn from those who have experience and to develop one’s own skill. For Ms. Eckert some of the main elements she discussed as contributing to a strong leader are the willingness to coach others, emotional intelligence, a sense of spirituality, valuing diversity, and openness to change and innovation. It should then be the hope of future nurses to emulate this idea of leadership and personal growth as members of the healthcare

My aspirations are to ultimately become an educator in the clinical setting. My main goal is to support and educate patients, families, and the healthcare team. Though I am highly focused on completing tasks as a student nurse, I do not believe that my preferred leadership style is a close resemblance of my current practice as a leader and nursing student. As a nursing student, I am focused on getting each task completed, but I believe I am equally supportive to my patients, my patient’s family, and my colleagues. I believe that I use the leadership style of coaching as a nursing student, especially while teaching the patient. As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
Throughout my education, I proved that I am a hard working student that will never give up. My ambition of becoming a nurse, pushed me even harder to reach my goal. My ethical and moral views, beliefs, attitudes and values have been fashioned by an up bringing that centred on Christian beliefs. Even though religion was not forced upon me as a child, my mother raised us all with a strong sense of right and wrong. Along with the influence of my family, the Navy has had a big influence on the person I am. The Navy has a strong ethos of what is expected of the personnel that serve; this is made up of the following: Leadership, High Professional Standards, and Courage in Adversity, Determination, Loyalty, Mutual Respect, Discipline, A Sense of Humour, Teamwork, and A Can Do Attitude. Most recently of all though, the biggest thing that has influenced me as a person and a parent has been my experiences of working with young people. This includes acting as a Youth Advisor for Portsmouth City Council, a Mentor for Barnardos and a Youth Advisor for East Sussex County Council. I am currently working in two secondary schools as part of my resettlement from the Navy. This has given me the experience of working with young people living in virtual poverty, in constant trouble with the Police and education services and some young people with varying levels of disabilities. This work has given me a good ability to stay impartial, to be non judgemental and has given me a capacity to treat people a lot more emphatically than I was ever able to. This is because I have been exposed to a greater range of problems and personalities than I have been used to in the Navy. These are qualities that I will hopefully be able to transfer into my coaching practice.
I believe that nursing should be a holistic approach, dealing with a patient’s body, mind, and soul. It is definitely a physically demanding job, but equally as important is the demand for emotional commitment. My past academic performance, as well as my personal qualities, provides the foundation for my career. A core characteristic of a successful nurse is teamwork and the ability to act as the liaison between the patients and the other members of the patients’ care teams. Besides working well in a team, it is also important to seek out help when necessary. Another vital quality is culture competency. Prosperous nurses understand diversity, and embrace and honor, rather than judge or ignore, what makes people different. Furthermore, critical thinking skills allow nurses to recognize possible patient problems. The intellectually disciplined process enables the nurses to respond to the constant changes and needs of a patient in their charge. Lastly, the nurse’s role has a zero tolerance for error where the smallest mistake may result in a life-threatening event. To ensure patient safety, it is critical to pay attention to detail and use caution no matter how stressed or overwhelmed a person might feel. These are the core qualities that I hope to attain as a registered nurse and important goals to adhere to for as long as I’m in this
