What began as tutoring sessions designed for a child to learn how to solve fractions evolved into the moment that forever parallels my revelation to become a doctor. When I first met Abby, she hid behind her mother and struggled to even count. After this disclosure, Abby began talking to me, her grades improved, and she accumulated several friends. I soon realized that the greatest lesson I taught her was not cross multiplication, but the belief that someone understood her and that she mattered. Additionally, she bestowed me the moment that began my journey to become a doctor. I just had yet to realize it. Experiences such as these compelled me to start writing. Writing became my outlet for empathizing with others and valuing different ways of life. Also, I enjoyed stringing together various plot elements to form an articulate story much- as I would soon learn- how doctors consider several factors when deducing a diagnosis. Through serving in various leadership roles, I reignited my passion for mentoring and fostering lasting relationships. Particularly as a science teaching assistant, I became a leader and counselor by teaching classes, utilizing metaphors to explain complex science, and encouraging others by relating to their struggles. Also, I discovered the importance of truly being in the moment by being receptive to others’ unvoiced problems. Most notably, this position taught me that we can all learn something new from each other as I experienced before with Abby. All these benefits incited me to create a mentorship program on my college campus that pairs accomplished seniors with younger students. Many years ago there was a small boy who was woken by a loud scream. Terrified, he ran from his room to find his mother unconscious on the floor. His little sister was screaming as he pulled his mom onto her back in desperation. In reality, he didn’t know what to do to save her and his helplessness was due to his lack of knowledge. She passed away that night. That boy was me. Our past defines us no matter how we protest; it can either pull you down into failure or lift you up towards success. From then on, I was drawn to medical sciences and used that helplessness to motivate my education.

The Ultimate Career Goal: I am extremely passionate about marine and wildlife ecosystems and all their inhabitants and have a desire to work in a career that allows me to work closely within these ecosystems as well as allowing myself to educate those that surround me about the importance of science. My ultimate career goal is to work as a laboratory and field technician for a reputable company or organisation.
When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.
I often tell the story of how my mentors changed my life. For a long time, I was unsure about the direction I wanted to take my career. It was only when I had a long conversation with one of my mentors that I realized education was the right field for me. My mentors were also instrumental in changing my mindset about school, work, and life.
I am undecided as to who the most important human to me is. I have many valuable people in my life who support me: parents, siblings, friends, and teachers. However, one person that has become very important to me over the last year is my mentor. Bob Proctor, a well-known author, defines a mentor as “someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.” In this quote, Mr. Proctor accurately describes the role of a mentor in one’s life. Audra, my dance teacher, is my unofficial mentor and one of my greatest cheerleaders in life. She has influenced me in several ways: through her words of encouragement, her teaching, and her reflection of Jesus.

In writing we have the opportunity to reflect inwardly on ourselves, and to put our thoughts and emotions into words. With writing we can learn many important things about ourselves and others, and hope to gain a broader worldview.
Being at Towson provides multiple opportunities for students to grow. While our skills and characteristics are improving every day, my strongest skills are in communication, organizing, and time management. In addition I am honest and committed. Being a mentor is all about communication and commitment. As a mentor the more you reach out to your mentee and show them support the more they can use you as a resource. My goal is to have the opportunity to help someone have a positive experience at Towson. It is so important for students to feel like they have community that is willing to lift them up. Becoming a student mentor has not only helped my mentee, but it has also impacted my life as well. By being invested and committed in the student mentor process it has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I was able to provide guidance, support, advice and knowledge to another nursing student like my instructor had previously done for me. My semester as a Teaching Assistant was one of my outstanding accomplishments. This was a new position open for the first time to undergraduates; and the professors’ selection was based on overall performance where I exhibited a prodigious work ethic. The professors felt I was dependable and hardworking since they observed that I paid attention, took notes, asked questions, and satisfactorily completed papers and exams. These actions plus completion of extra credit work such as participating in a study observing red wolves in the wild for a weekend, showed that I excelled to be the best and that I wanted to learn everything they were teaching. A panel of professors reviewed my application with the final decision being made by the incoming professor, who had limited eyesight. The professor could read papers up close, but having a Teaching Assistant enabled her to effectively be the professor. I ensured suitable
Over time, writing has become much more personal for me. I have used it as an outlet in times of stress, depressions, and change. When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness at fifteen, my writing became the one place I felt I could express my fear and frustration. Conversely, my writing has given me a way to express joy, humor and love, take a break from the chaos of this world we live in, and possibly inspire emotion and passion in those who read my work. “3 A’s: Attitude, Attendance, and Achievement,” are the pillars that built my relationship with my mentor, Mr. Bass. Since middle school, he had mentored me to this day. He enlightened me about my surroundings and showed me that there is a world outside my little community.
