Leadership is the ability to motivate a group of people to be willing to achieve a common goal. An effective leader does more than just solve problems and completes tasks. A leader must also address the human element of being a role model and mentor; providing an example for those they lead to aspire to become. The most influential experiences for me have been learning from past leaders and through the leadership training that I have attended. Past leaders, both good and bad, have provided me authentic examples of how to act as a leader; while the training opportunities have provided me with accurate feedback and methods for self-improvement. For myself, developing as a leader is a continuous process in which I always search for and welcome …show more content…
It is also important for a leader to know and understand their values, and be certain that they are living out these values. The personal values that are important to me are loyalty, commitment, and courage. While there are several positive leadership values that can be portrayed, these to me are the most important.
Loyalty is an important value as a leader because those being led need to see that their leader is loyal to the team and to the Coast Guard. Having a group of individuals that are loyal to each other creates an environment of success. If loyalty is not present, then the team will have difficulty trusting each other, creating conflict within the team. Displaying loyalty as a leader will create a desire among those being led to be devoted to the group and in sharing the same goals.
Commitment is a significant leadership value because the members need to see that the leader is committed to achieving the same goals and committed to every member of the team. If a leader is not committed they will appear unmotivated and lazy which will establish such behaviors as the status quo. Having leaders that show commitment can inspire members to give their best
The most important value that I have is my integrity. I demonstrate honesty and trust in all my actions to establish credibility as a leader. By having this conviction behind my words and actions, those who I lead are gain buy in to the direction I take them.
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is leading a group of people or company to reach a result or further and the organization. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Good leaders also don’t use their position within a company to take advantage of the company and its employees. A good leader is supposed to be able to perform their job with high standards, efficiency, and honor. However, for every good leader, there are bad leaders and the worse the leader the more detrimental he or she becomes to employees and the company they run. Poor leadership skills can ultimately ruin a company 's chance of success. The attitude
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
I believe that core values are essential to construct my character and personality as a leader. My core values that I believe are as follow:
Leadership is essentially the ability to motivate. An effective leader can motivate others toward reaching a common goal. Leaders are different than managers in that leaders inspire others to do the work needed while managers generally tend to manage the tasks associated with completing the goal.
Although I have many core values, including diligence, happiness, helpfulness, true friendship, freedom, and intelligence, the most significant in my life are love, morality, honesty, and forgivingness. Throughout my life, these particular values have proved key to becoming the person I wished to be. “The term leadership involves our self-images and moral codes” (Values in Leadership). In order to lead and to be someone who upholds their values, one must be fully aware of what is important to them and what drives them.
Throughout my life, my experiences and role models have shaped my understanding of leadership. I believe leadership is responsibly guiding and motivating others to use both my strengths and their own to obtain success. My personal leadership philosophy is guided by my core values of my family, relationships, loyalty, harmony, and responsibility. My ever-changing definition of philosophy helps my leadership and decision making routinely. New experience’s and external forces effect my translation of leadership daily which, in turn, helps shape me into a successful leader.
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.
Values Values are important, as they contribute significantly to great leadership skills. Three values that are important to have in leadership roles include the ability to prioritize, having integrity, and being compassionate while leading. The ability to prioritize helps leaders to know how to weight the importance of different task, as well as knowing what can, or cannot be pushed off. Prioritizing reveals the ability to make tough decisions. Having integrity shows that a leader weighs all options before they make a decision.
Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Leadership is something that is heavily prevalent in the workforce and in the world today. Being a leader, in my opinion, takes someone (or a group of people) who is willing and able to lead a few or many people. Not every leader though is successful or leads in a positive way. There definitely exists both good and bad leadership. Many leaders fail while many achieve extraordinary milestones. But everyone, not just leaders, have their pitfalls and rough patches in life. I know that I myself have some weaknesses as a leader, and that is what I want to take some time to reflect on.
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
Being in a leadership role pushes a person to be a good role model, make decisions, be fair and reliable, and to have integrity. One of the most important qualities, though, is to have commitment. If you expect your team to work hard and attain success, you will have to lead by example. There is no greater incentive than seeing the person in charge working right alongside everyone else, where the work is being done on every level. By proving your commitment to the overall goals and to your own role, you will not only earn the respect and admiration of your team, but you will also encourage that same hardworking energy among your staff. It’s key to show your commitment not only to the existing goal, but also to your promises. In keeping your word, you want to create a reputation for not just being perseverant, but also be known as a fair leader. Once you have gained the respect of your team, they are more likely to put in the amount of work it will take to reach the ending goal.
