My Leadership Values

Leadership is the ability to motivate a group of people to be willing to achieve a common goal. An effective leader does more than just solve problems and completes tasks. A leader must also address the human element of being a role model and mentor; providing an example for those they lead to aspire to become. The most influential experiences for me have been learning from past leaders and through the leadership training that I have attended. Past leaders, both good and bad, have provided me authentic examples of how to act as a leader; while the training opportunities have provided me with accurate feedback and methods for self-improvement. It is also important for a leader to know and understand their values, and be certain that they are living out these values. The personal values that are important to me are loyalty, commitment, and courage. While there are several positive leadership values that can be portrayed, these to me are the most important.
Loyalty is an important value as a leader because those being led need to see that their leader is loyal to the team and to the Coast Guard. Having a group of individuals that are loyal to each other creates an environment of success. If loyalty is not present, then the team will have difficulty trusting each other, creating conflict within the team. Displaying loyalty as a leader will create a desire among those being led to be devoted to the group and in sharing the same goals.
Commitment is a significant leadership value because the members need to see that the leader is committed to achieving the same goals and committed to every member of the team. If a leader is not committed they will appear unmotivated and lazy which will establish such behaviors as the status quo. Having leaders that show commitment can inspire members to give their best
