E. Lockhart composed the novel We Were Liars. The novel is narrated by Candence, the oldest grandchild of the Sinclair family. The Sinclair family is very wealthy and they own a private island known as Beechwood Island. Every summer the entire family spends their vacation on the island. However, not every summer is the same. During summer fifteen Cadence got in an accident. Unfortunately, the “Liars”, which include Candence, Johnny, Gat, and Mirren, actually have a secret they were hiding until it is revealed at the end of the novel. During summer fifteen, Candence and Gat began to reveal their feelings for each other. While the four liars were off exploring all summer, their mothers and aunts were arguing about their inheritance. Additionally, Candence had an accident. Fitzgerald portrays Jay as a loveable millionaire during the roaring 20s who’s claim to fortune is the topic of controversy in Long Island, New York. Jay portrays himself to be a war hero and a kind host for party goers as he hosts elaborate parties each weekend at his mansion, with lavish spectacles to which people are desperate to be invited to. However under this facade is a deeply scarred man who pursued and embraced wealth to impress the women he once loved. Lack of love is the main component which breeds a traumatic experience. Will is the product of physical and emotional abuse and is motivated by the need for survival. The negative events which have lingered in the back of his mind, limited his potential. An orphan and low key genius, Will grew up in Boston and made friends with a group who had no future. There is no doubt Will is a genius with a lot of fear and in the film, Sant unravels how he escapes these fears. The fear of never fulfilling of their potential dangles over the minds of Jay and Will. Fitzgerald and Sant both use a character to help Jay and Will overcome their past. Jay has the support of his neighbour, Nick Carraway, who’s well suited to narrating the story of “The Great Gatsby” as he tells the reader “he is tolerant, open-minded, quiet and a good listener. We discovered their different identities and how their choices and role models effect their lives. Wes 1 was led by his brave, hard working mother and the great military men. He didn't make incredibly great decisions but the people in his life helped him turn into the successful man he is today.However, Wes 2 had a brother who dealt drugs. He grew up in a working class neighborhood in Chicago. He was close to his mother, Mayrum, and sister, Karen. His father was a violent alcoholic, who beat Gacy frequently during his violent outbursts. Gacy loved his father despite his violent temper and homophobic nature. Throughout his childhood, Gacy strove to make his stern father proud of him, but seldom received his approval.
The book Blind, written by Rachel DeWoskin, is about a highschool sophomore named Emma, who went blind after being struck in the face with a firework. When she first lost her sight, Emma was placed in a hospital for over 2 months, and once she was released, she could finally go home again. DeWoskin uses the characterization of Emma throughout the beginning of the text to help the reader understand the character’s struggle more. Especially in the first few chapters, it was difficult for Emma to adapt to a world without sight. For instance, DeWoskin writes, “And sat down, numb, on our gold couch. And tried to open my eyes, rocked, counted my legs and arms and fingers. I didn’t cry. Or talk” (DeWoskin 44). As a result of losing a very important scent, she’s started to act differently from a person with sight.

This book was a story about two people who have the same name and grew up in similar environments, but had very different lives. The author of the book, Mr. Moore, became successful and was given the opportunity to receive “one of the most prestigious academic awards for students in the world” (Moore, 2011). On the other side of the spectrum, the other Wes Moore “will spend every day until his death behind bars for an armed robbery that left a police officer and a father of five dead” (Moore, 2011). American Character by Colin Woodard, is a book about America’s history and the upcoming of how the United States has become. Woodard starts off first explaining what it was like when America was colonized by the New England colonists and goes onward to present-day America. A book like this should be deemed great for a political history class because of the vast amount of information it has. Although, this book is exceptionally very small for a book of such kind, Woodard loves jumping around from era to era and can leave his readers at a disarray. Claiming so, a strong and prior knowledge of the American history and its government is strongly encouraged. Historical and economic terms are also used immensely in this book, so a thesaurus and dictionary would be of great use. If those two resources aren’t of much help, a recommendation of facts found upon the Internet regarding an era of which Woodard is explaining would be helpful.
In The Other Wes Moore, the author and a neighbor have the same name, Wes Moore, and they both begin their lives in similar ways. However, as their lives progress, they begin to part. For example, both “lost” their fathers when they were young. Because of the way their mothers respond to this loss, the boys’ lives begin to separate. Both mothers have different responses to challenges in general, which eventually leads them to respond to their child’s actions in contrasting ways. Throughout this novel, readers learn that depending on how a mother decides to react to the negative actions of their child’s actions, the child can either lead a successful life or lead a life of failure.
Ellen Foster by Kayne Gibbons and The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger have some elements that are similar. These elements are used to express the development of Holden and Ellen throughout each novel. One of these elements is characterization. According to Dictionary.com, characterization is the description of qualities or peculiarities. Characterization is mostly used in three ways in each novel; Style of Clothes, Style of Speech, and the Search for a Home. His uncle and his family always provided him with a welcome and appreciative environment. After leaving the rehabilitation center and moved to his uncle’s household Beah and his cousins had the opportunity to share and spend time together. Back then during the era of the Jim Crow laws, it was even worse. However, during that time period when there were many oppressed blacks, there were many whites who courageously defied against the acts of racism, and proved that the color of your skin should not matter. Courage is valued in many ways. It is measured by bravery, heroism, physical strength, and morally correct behavior. The world mostly defines courage as having physical strength and being brave. Atticus, Scout, and Jem show many acts of courage through the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. They all have different views and opinions on courage. The novel is told from the point of view of Scout. She, and her brother Jem, live with their widowed father in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s.
