Literary Analysis of Speak The main character is named Melinda Sordino in the book Speak By: Laurie Halse Anderson, and starts her freshman year at Merryweather High.
During summer her and her friends went to a party that Melinda ended up calling the cops on, causing everyone at school to ignore and forget about her except one new girl named Heather. Throughout the book Melinda is in situations with “IT,” which is a senior named Andy evans, she founds her voice by standing up for herself. Laurie Halse Anderson develops the idea that a person must face their fear in order to find their voice. This can be seen in the development of the
plot. Through out the first three quarters of the book, Melinda faces her fear and goes deeper inside herself. Some things that show this is when Melinda is putting up posters for Heather and ‘IT’ comes. “I'm hanging a poster outside the metal-shop room when IT creeps up.”(85) Also when Heather and her had lunch together and got in a fight, because Heather didn’t want to be friends anymore. When Melinda finally stands up to “IT,” she faces her feer and begins to speak up. Melinda really finds her voice, and really who she is in this moment because she is able to stand up for herself and say no. “A sound explodes from me. "NNNOOO! ! !" I follow the sound, pushing off the wall, pushing Andy Evans off-balance, stumbling into the broken sink.” (193) I think this also shows a oppurtunity to show/tell others about the issue, and Melinda is able to open up about it so she can move past the problem. This book showed that people should have to face their fears and find their voice just the way that Melinda did, and faced her fears by standing up for herself to “IT.” When Melinda stood up for herself I think that she found her voice, and other people understood where she was coming from. Everyone should be able to speak up for themselves when they know something is wrong, and telling people about the issue can also help. Thats why you must face your fear in order to move past it and to find your voice.
“To climb…you have to be completely selfish”(pg.182). Though it may not always be true, to some degree it is. But it’s not just when you’re climbing, every single action that you take could be the difference between trust and suspicion, between death and life, between rising glory and simmering rage. In The Other Wes Moore, the author and a neighbor have the same name, Wes Moore, and they both begin their lives in similar ways. However, as their lives progress, they begin to part. For example, both “lost” their fathers when they were young. Because of the way their mothers respond to this loss, the boys’ lives begin to separate. Both mothers have different responses to challenges in general, which eventually leads them to respond to their child’s actions in contrasting ways. Throughout this novel, readers learn that depending on how a mother decides to react to the negative actions of their child’s actions, the child can either lead a successful life or lead a life of failure.

Melinda Sordino begins freshman year at Merryweather High School, being a complete different person. Over the summer, Melinda and her friends went to a senior party, where Melinda ended calling the police. This caused her friends and the people at the party to socially reject her, even though they didn’t knew that before the phone call, Andy Evans raped her. Due to the phone call, Melinda enters high school without friends and having to see Andy Evans everyday. Her only “safe” place in the entire school is art class, where Mr. Freeman is the teacher. Mr. Freeman is the only teacher Melinda doesn’t dislike or avoids, because he listens and understands her, but also shows her the value of honesty.
