Professional Introduction
Presently, I am a Special Education teacher working with children who have a wide range of learning disabilities. My goal is to help students achieve their goals by making the appropriate modification to meet their needs. These needs are not limited, but may include emotional, physical, or cognitive. To start with my interest in this field is because I feel with the proper help and assistance; students are able to achieve anything. Education is essential for everyone. Undoubtedly, the reason why pursuing a PhD is the right decision for me, is because I enjoy what I do, I believe that helping is the key, and more importantly students are in need. At this level, my ultimate goal is to help students that have a learning disability and provide them with the proper resources needed to enhance it. In addition, want to help students to conquer their obstacle and give them the motivation to strive for the best. Introduce students to an education with no limits. In general, I want to have the opportunity to see all my education, hard work, dedication, and motivation in this field, to be well payed off. Admittedly, I want the opportunity to look back at my journey and say “it was all worth it”.

City Workshop, Richard Lavoie is able to simulate several of the difficulties that a student with a learning disability has to face at school. Some of the difficulties experienced by the students are intrinsic to the disability itself, but many other difficulties are directly related with the emotions that the student experiences when attending a class, and as a result of his or her interactions with teachers and classmates. Both the United States law and the education system, have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the learning experience of every student with disability. Students with disabilities need to be guided to a path to education that is both feasible and accessible for them; with achievable goals, and by being provided what they need in order to succeed, and to be able to overcome any obstacles.
Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would teach me more than I had ever imagined. As a recent college graduate, I was thrilled to finally begin my teaching career in a field I have always held close to my heart. My first two years as a special education teacher presented countless challenges, however, it also brought me great fulfillment and deepened my passion for teaching students with special needs. The experiences I have had both before and after this pivotal point in my life have undoubtedly influenced my desire to further my career in the field of special education.

Students with learning disabilities can learn; each student has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. We have places where we want to end up and goals we want to achieve. We set these goals and dreams to help us fulfill the purpose we see for ourselves. All teachers dream of the classroom filled with fifteen tranquil, enthusiastic students, all with their note books out and pencils prompt for note taking. This is the classroom where everyone works together, at the same pace, and without any interruptions or distractions. This is the ideal classroom setting. The only problem with this picture is that it does not exist. Students are all different. Kids all learn different ways, and at varying paces. Both Physical and Learning Disabilities can hinder a child’s learning speed and hold them back from the rest of the class. It can be very difficult to identify a child with a learning disability because students can often be misunderstood and labeled as unmotivated and lazy. These students are often ignored and not given enough individual attention, and therefore they experience difficulty and frustration all throughout their education. Teaching students with learning disabilities takes a knowledgeable and understanding teacher and often requires adaptation of the curriculum. The education of these students often needs so much “constant attention and fine tuning if they are to succeed,” (Mather, 3) that they hold the rest of the class back. It is these cases that students should seek an adaptive classroom program and individual attention to work on their problematic areas. The bottom line is these students cannot be allowed to fall through the cracks of our educational system. They need positive reinforcement and individual attention so that they are confident in class and productive when they do their work.
My motivation is based on two things. Firstly, I really want to help other people as much as I can. The understanding of human behaviour is the key for me to help others improve their well-being. This made me start seeking for information and experiences beyond the university’s classes and books. There was 30 hours of supervised Clinical Child Psychology Practice, where I was shadowing a professional psychologist at an Educational Consultancy. I really liked my time there and I felt like I could not have chosen any other career. Getting a job is probably the most worrisome matter for college seniors. Nowadays most students deem college education as an investment that can eventually bring profits in the long run in terms of a financially successful career. To this end, a great number of students major in the most lucrative majors, which are not their actual interests. Luckily, I am able to dive into the field I love in college, and it blends with my career goal perfectly. I like teaching and conducting research, so I hope to become a psychology professor at a research university some day.
Ultimately, everything has helped me become a better person despite not realizing it at the moment. I’ve learned how to balance school and my personal life so that I can get the most out of college. I’ve especially learned how to effectively manage money, because let’s face it: we’re all broke. I’ve also learned how to maintain relationships with my family, who I’m really close with. In a world today where information is at a student’s fingertips it’s still so surprising how little students know about the world around them. It is my professional goal to use my Secondary Education, Social Studies Broad Field degree to become a High School Global Studies teacher with a creative twist. When my future students leave my classroom, I want them to have not only a greater understanding of the world events and cultures at large, but also have a great appreciation of the community culture that surrounds them.

My rationale for pursuing this degree is much deeper than my dream of helping children, although that is, of course, where it all begins. I have been working in the field of special education for some time now and in this time, I have observed unprecedented personal growth in my own life as I have connected with my students and learned from them reciprocally. It is true that a good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning. Inspiration from the teachers has changed the perspective of my life; from my first consciousness as a student in my school life to undergraduate engineering classes, my teachers have inspired me to learn more and more and to understand the intrinsic life problems. Admittedly, behind every great teacher, there is a good teaching assistant. Being teaching assistant, I want to part of the students’ life and contribute to their future by direct or indirect means. Teachers can also teach foreign languages, art, kids with special needs, and P.E. Teaching has changed a lot compared to the traditional methods of just lectures and textbooks. Students now are encouraged to actively learn through groups or individual projects. They have learning games, debates, and experiments to help them through the learning process.
