Individuals can unravel effective study strategies by discovering what their learning style is and by embracing inspirational motivation skill. Motivational skills can trigger cognitive reasoning, and allow the mind to learn and become successful. As a group, we chose motivation and efficient study strategies, because these topics parallel with each other, illustrating the need for both to be victorious in academic goals. Negative motivators can prevent learning in one’s life. Motivation comes in all forms creating stimulation in the mind and body to complete a task. Motivation helps us to identify reasons for learning, helps to create productive organization skills, creates the desire for time-management dynamics, and generates positive support systems. Additionally, goal-setting abilities, monitoring emotions, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors in the process are all part of the motivation and study strategy process.
According to Boekaerts (n.d.) “Motivational beliefs act as a frame of reference that guides students’ thinking, feelings and actions in a subject area.” If a student believes that they are good at writing and enjoy reading poetry, they will usually be optimistic and willing to do quality work around that subject. Conversely, if a student believes that math is difficult, or they have been led to believe they do not excel in working with numbers, the level of motivation to complete an assignment is prone to be unfavorable. Boekaert believes that once a student has formed a particular view towards a subject, it may be difficult to shift their view and grades will reflect their view.

One important aspect of building this bridge is to understand the various learning styles evident in the classroom. Teachers tend to have their own preferences, or strengths, concerning their styles (Thompson, 1997). According to Thompson (1997), teachers noted for their excellence tended to teach in ways consistent with their own styles but found ways to reach students whose preferences differed. These ways included finding material and activities that spurred the student’s interest, and once the student was engaged, allowed the teacher to facilitate the course material. Being motivated is not just about a good end result, but it is about acquiring an ingrained mindset that empowers and directs one’s behavior. (Tan, OS, Parsons, R. D., Hinson, S. L., & Sardo-Brown, D., 2011) Mary Doe can clearly be seen to be unmotivated in learning as seen from her low expectations of success. She is seen to have a low gauge of her ability, which leads to her low confidence, and lowered motivation towards her academics. We will explore the possible causes, as well as solutions to aid the improvement of her motivation in learning.
Teachers assess a child’s strengths and weaknesses in the classroom to figure out the best way for the child to learn. The theory is that children learn in one of three ways: visually, auditorily, and kinesthetically (Fliess, Paragraph 1). So how do teachers identify students’ learning types? According to Dr. James Keefe, former director of research for the National Association of Secondary School Principals, only ten to fifteen percent of schools use formal tests to determine learning styles. Most teachers, however, especially in elementary school, observe their students closely to determine learning styles. Then the teachers use learning style strategies that individualize instruction to take advantage of each student’s learning type (Staff). Understanding a students learning style is imperative to building a strong bond between teacher and student. “A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.

Being motivated is an important to being successful in studying. Cottrell (2003) suggests that, you would need to have a high level of motivation to help you stay focused and find ways to help you through any problems that may occur during studying. For instance, I will be using many steps to help me implement this skill into my studies. Sometimes you will just have to use the mind frame of just do it to motivate or you may need to create a strategy to help you. A strategy that I will use to help increase my motivation is by rewarding myself for studying, for example, once I have finished the required goals for my day I can go watch an episode of my favourite show. Another strategy to help me with my studies would be to create a motivational poster. This would be a poster placed in my study area that includes positive words, quotes and pictures that will help motivate me to be successful. Finally, reminding myself of the long term goal and what I want to achieve will help with my motivation. Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.

There are infinite procedures teachers use to achieve desired effects from their students, but there are general patterns these motivational tools follow. In order for teachers to communicate with their students, they must identify with their needs on an individual basis (Gawel, 1997). This proposal is much akin to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which states five basic needs that must be met in order to achieve full motivation. These needs, in ascending order, are as follows: physiological, security, love and belongingness, esteem and self-respect, and self-actualization (Gawel, 1997). Each of these needs details a very important issue in motivation inside the classroom and out.

This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
