My desire to study developed into a passion throughout secondary school. I consider midwifery as an extremely rewarding profession and I would be privileged to study it at your university. I believe that midwives demonstrate essential skills, which are honourable and gratifying. Having the pleasure to witness and assist in bringing a new life into the world would be incredible.
I am a caring and empathetic person. communicate effectively with some women who may not understand English. Studying A Level Biology has provided a useful insight into how the human body works. My particular fascination is about the human body, specifically reproduction. It inspired me to dwell into the subject, which made me even more enthusiastic about midwifery. BTEC science allowed me to apply my scientific skills to real life situations. Geography enabled me to look into how women have to go through pregnancy in different circumstances. This sparked an interest to me of the possibility of working abroad in the future to help pregnant women elsewhere. My interest to study midwifery grew further when I witnessed the pregnancy of my cousin. Observing her whilst going through pregnancy was informative as it showed me what pregnant women have to go through. Unfortunately, she had pre-eclampsia, which caused the midwives to make the decision to induce her so that an emergency caesarean operation could be performed. This inspired me as they had to make a very important decision for both the mother and the child, which gave an insight into the conditions that they have to work in. I realise that the degree and the profession are both demanding , challenging and involves working in tense situations, which is something I am definitely willing to do. I am very enthusiastic to do this because working in challenging circumstances is something I thrive for. Moreover being able to assist is people’s life would be an honour. My keen interest to assist people was demonstrated during my work experience at bath road pharmacy and whilst I was volunteering at stroke foundation. The experience enhanced my communication and interpersonal skills and enabled me to talk to people from different ethnic origins. This is very useful, especially as midwives would assist pregnancy of women from different ethnic backgrounds. The experience also gave me the opportunity to work as a team. I know that in midwifery, teamwork is vital to provide the best possible care to the mother and their families. Working at bath road pharmacy allowed me to enhance this skill which is useful for midwifery. Aside from my determination of being a midwife I have taken part in many extracurricular activites.
I consider myself to be creative. I am a henna artist and my interest in henna art and makeup has developed over the years. I am also gaining my qualification as a makeup artist at West Thames College. Being able to work as a team in the collage and interact with other people from different cultures and background has enhanced my communication skills. Ice skating and swimming allowed me to do something I really enjoy.
Overall I strongly believe that I would be an asset to your university as I am a responsible, reliable, and caring and a hardworking individual. I know that your university is an excellent place for a midwife to train in and it will give me a very strong foundation in the profession. I would be extremely privileged to study this course at your university and hope you would consider me as a potential student. I am certain that it will provide me with the best education needed to become a successful midwife that is required by the
nation.
Ever Since when I was a young girl I always admired to become a midwife.I believe in order for me to become a successful midwife I need to be well equipped and prepared for the midwife role. I currently have a bit of experience in a hospital settings such as Royal London Hospital where I did my work experience for two weeks at the audiology department as a health care assistant. During my work experience I worked with people of different levels and backgrounds, some with learning disabilities as well as some with
Imagine having a job that helps guide mothers during their process of bringing new life into the world. Imagine being one of the reasons a new life was brought into the world. Labor and Delivery nurses are responsible for being a good support system to women experiencing childbirth. L & D nurses help guide mothers through labor before and after the birth of their newborn(s). Due to my fascination in helping mothers bringing new life into the world, I have chosen to attend Germanna Community College and continue my education at the University of Virginia in order to pursue my career as a registered nurse specializing in labor and delivery.
Nicholls, L., & Webb, C. (2006). What makes a good midwife? An integrative review of methodologically-diverse research. Journal Of Advanced Nursing, 56(4), 414-429. doi:10.1111/j.1365-2648.2006.04026.x
I initially considered midwifery when I attended an antenatal scan with my auntie and heard the heartbeat of the unborn baby for the first time. Listening to discussions regarding health concerns and family support highlighted the importance of the midwife and mother relationship. Two years ago I was given the opportunity to be my mum’s birthing partner alongside my dad. I saw how the midwives interacted and were supportive through the birthing and decision making process. It was found that the baby was breach and the safe option was a caesarean section, and with the complications discussed mum was able to make the right decision. I attended pre and postnatal appointments and listened to the midwives offering advice and guidance, develop a birthing plan as well as check and monitor the health and wellbeing of mum. These first hand experiences have given me a deeper understanding of the role of a midwife and how communication and building trusting relationships is key during these emotional and vulnerable times for a woman, and inspired me to become a midwife.
Qualities I feel I will bring to my profession as a Human Service Profession. My major while attending Old Dominion University is in Human Services. My Professional aspirations are to learn new skills and new ideas, being open minded. Being, a human service worker I know I will be working with individuals from different backgrounds sharing a different way of life, knowing this being open-minded a great trait to have. Combining all that I’ve learned with the knowledge I have working in Healthcare for several years. I enjoy working with individuals both young and old. Women, my first choice. Healthcare and Human Services are similar fields of work in many ways, both jobs you are working with people, a job that I’ve enjoyed for many years and hope for many more to come. Again, I truly enjoy working with people.
Compassion, determination and commitment are qualities I possess that I believe will make me succeed in an Adult Nursing Degree. I am elated to choose this course because it is interesting, challenging, rewarding and satisfying. I have a great passion in assisting the older person especially at their vulnerable state. My experience as a healthcare assistant has given me the opportunity to assist and care for vulnerable elderly people in and care and nursing home setting. The job required me to assist service users with personal needs such as communication, feeding, personal hygiene, elimination and other activities of daily living which has improved my skills and ability of being able to verbally interact in a satisfactory manner to individuals and groups, producing high standard written reports and effectively relating to people from all walks of life. I am excited to learn to meet the challenges adult nursing profession faces as it seeks to promote health and wellbeing. I will further learn on this course to take responsibility for providing personalised care, as well as respecting
My father, two paternal uncles, two maternal uncles, five cousins, and two cousin’s husbands. Three cousins who are in medical school along my sister who is on the premed track. These are the statistics behind my claim of being from a family of physicians. Importantly, these statistics do not hold much importance in my choosing of becoming a family medicine physician. In my last year of medical school, evaluating my personal experiences with my family, my country of origin, and future opportunities, I decided that family medicine was the field I wanted to be a part of.
“Every man is born as many men, and dies as a single one.” This quote by German philosopher Martin Heidegger fits well with my decision to aspire to become a physician assistant. While I always wanted to help others, especially the disadvantaged of our society, I did not initially realize what outlet this longing would have. Ultimately, however, I found that the PA profession was the best avenue where I could unite this concern for others with my intellectual strengths and abilities.
Creativity is a process of having original ideas that have value. A big part of being creative is looking for new ways of doing things within whatever activity an individual is involved in. The most creative teacher displays a great deal of curiosity about many things; constantly asking questions about anything and everything; able to determine the main problems even in an extremely disarray situation and generate a large number of ideas or solutions to problems in often unusual, unique and clever manner.
“All over the world there exists in every society a small group of women who feel themselves strongly attracted to give care to other women during pregnancy and childbirth. Failure to make use of this group of highly motivated people is regrettable and a sin against the principle of subsidiarity.”
Ever since I was a young girl, Nursing has always been an area for which I have had a passion. As far back as I can remember, whenever someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my response was to be a children’s nurse and to help others. Child nursing is a very challenging and demanding course, however the rewards would make it all worth it, and I am ready to embark on this career path. I have observed the devotion and humanity of child nurses who go further than just treating young patients; they genuinely wanted to make them happy and as comfortable as possible in difficult times. I found this very inspiring, and it is the main reason why I am immensely inspired to train in this field in order to be in a position to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people who depend on us.
Being accountable to me as a professional is saying yes to the call and responsibility we have to bear out. It is a responsibility we take for ourselves and for others who rely on us to be present in any situations. The mission requires an openness to relationship with others. The consistency of performing at a higher level each time the job is done and strive to give all for the greatest good. In collaboration with others involved. That bond can strengthen when everyone involved intersect their effort to the same purpose. The skills acquired over the years as a bedside nurses give me an opportunity to be dependable and trustworthy. Knowing what to do in difficult situations and being intuitive is a plus. It can help in a managerial position
What exactly is creativity? To be creative is to understand and connect the small details of our experiences, both good and bad (creative something). Creativity involves a person using his or her original ideas to create something. Artists such as poets, writers, painters, designers, and more use creativity on a regular basis. They use creativity to come up with new ideas and create original works of art. A poet would use his or her creative abilities to write and produce a poem just like a painter would use creativity to paint a painting.
Adult Nursing is a very rewarding career which provides endless opportunities. I would describe myself as a caring and compassionate person. I believe I possess these qualities naturally. I am compelled to put other people’s needs before my own. I can contribute my personal qualities to this course of being dedicated and determined into committing myself to this 3 year course and excelling academically. Personally, caring for my mother with high blood pressure made me interested in the world of medicine. This long term sickness inspired me to gain more experience outside of the home and volunteer which confirmed that this was the right course for me. I am fascinated by the practical aspect that the course involves as well as the theoretical
Women, children, and families have better lives because of the work of certified nurse-midwives. I have always wanted to make a difference-and have a positive influence on health care, which has lead me to my interest of the midwifery profession. To learn more about midwifery I chose to interview Kathleen London-Lopes. Mrs. Lopes is a board certified nurse midwife at Highland Obstetrics and Gynecology, in Fallriver Massachusetts. Along with the information she gave me about being a midwife I also researched information on onetonline.org. I believe my desire to care for others and promote women and infant health are two qualities I posses to become a successful nurse midwife.
